Book Synopsis A Madman's Manuscript by : Charles Dickens
Download or read book A Madman's Manuscript written by Charles Dickens and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is a grand thing to be mad" A rich, self-confessed madman meets a poor girl and, wishing to marry her, he puts on a "normal" persona and a fake smile. The girl’s family pushes her into his arms, but when the madman finds out that she is in love with someone else his true colours start to show. Similar to Joker (2019) starring Joaquin Phoenix, A Madman's Manuscript gives us an understanding of the inner workings of a seriously delusional and mentally ill person. Unnerving but very fascinating. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Book Synopsis The Raiders and Writers of Cervantes' Archive by : Paul Kong
Download or read book The Raiders and Writers of Cervantes' Archive written by Paul Kong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and his influence on Jorge Luis Borges, Manuel Puig and Gabriel Marquez, Paul Kong brings a variety of theoretical perspectives to bear as he analyzes the concepts of the archive and the manuscript. Setting the stage with an exploration of the intricate and intriguing relationship between the archive and the manuscript, Kong questions the apparently natural association between the two. In the light of Kong's historically contextualized and patient exegesis, the ideological nature of the archive, evident in its charge to serve as a totalizing habitat, stands in contrast with the manuscript that resists attempts to contain it. The playful responses of Borges, Puig and Marquez as they mine the "archive" of Cervantes' works support the anti-colonial dimension of Latin American literature and further problematize the relationship between archive and manuscript. The book concludes with a discussion of the future of archival discourse, especially in the setting of the virtual reality of the Internet and of globalization. Carefully grounded by Kong's close readings and supported by a wealth of astute references and allusions to writers as diverse as Virgil, Wordsworth, and Dickens, The Raiders and Writers of Cervantes' Archive is sure to provoke and intrigue Latin American scholars, narrative theorists, archivists, and those interested in issues related to cultural domination, ideology, and cyberspace.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1996 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Veranstaltung: Proseminar British Short Stories , 8 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Since having read about Old Marley's apparitions in A Christmas Carol we have been fascinated by Dickens' way of creating suspense and a ghost-like atmosphere. A Christmas Carol is probably one of his best known ghost stories, but it is, however, not his first. Dickens' earliest stories were inset tales in the Pickwick Papers first published in 1837. In this paper we first of all have a flashback on Dickens' life and works. Also, we will focus on the ghost story itself and explain, what reasons made Dickens write such stories and how he actually developed his skills. In a last step we are eventually going to have a closer look at two of his works - The Signalman and A Madman's Manuscript. With the help of those stories similarities and differences will be analysed and typical elements of a ghost story pointed out. ...]

Book Synopsis Memoirs of a Madman by : Gustave Flaubert
Download or read book Memoirs of a Madman written by Gustave Flaubert and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating and evocative work, Memoirs of a Madman is one of Flaubert's earliest writings, and forms the basis for his highly renowned L'Education Sentimentale. As a young man looks back on the years that have brought him to "madness," he recalls the innocence of his boyhood and his fond belief that he was blessed with a mind of genius. Yet, painfully, wretchedly, he also recounts his all-too-sudden entry into the adult world. For the day he caught sight of a beautiful woman by the sea marked the end of his flamboyant philosophizing, and the beginning of a tragic coming of age.
