Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ailton Krenak’s ideas inspire, washing over you with every truth-telling sentence. Read this book.” — Tanya Talaga, bestselling author of Seven Fallen Feathers Indigenous peoples have faced the end of the world before. Now, humankind is on a collective march towards the abyss. Global pandemics, extreme weather, and massive wildfires define this era many now call the Anthropocene. From Brazil comes Ailton Krenak, renowned Indigenous activist and leader, who demonstrates that our current environmental crisis is rooted in society’s flawed concept of “humanity” — that human beings are superior to other forms of nature and are justified in exploiting it as we please. To stop environmental disaster, Krenak argues that we must reject the homogenizing effect of this perspective and embrace a new form of “dreaming” that allows us to regain our place within nature. In Ideas to Postpone the End of the World, he shows us the way.

Book excerpt: In this majestic tour de force, celebrated historian Peter Linebaugh takes aim at the thieves of land, the polluters of the seas, the ravagers of the forests, the despoilers of rivers, and the removers of mountaintops. Scarcely a society has existed on the face of the earth that has not had commoning at its heart. “Neither the state nor the market,” say the planetary commoners. These essays kindle the embers of memory to ignite our future commons. From Thomas Paine to the Luddites, from Karl Marx—who concluded his great study of capitalism with the enclosure of commons—to the practical dreamer William Morris—who made communism into a verb and advocated communizing industry and agriculture—to the 20th-century communist historian E.P. Thompson, Linebaugh brings to life the vital commonist tradition. He traces the red thread from the great revolt of commoners in 1381 to the enclosures of Ireland, and the American commons, where European immigrants who had been expelled from their commons met the immense commons of the native peoples and the underground African-American urban commons. Illuminating these struggles in this indispensable collection, Linebaugh reignites the ancient cry, “STOP, THIEF!”

Book excerpt: Vast areas of valuable resources unfettered by legal rights have, for centuries, been the central target of human exploitation and appropriation. The global commons -- Antarctica, the high seas and deep seabed minerals, the atmosphere, and space -- have remained exceptions only because access has been difficult or impossible, and the technology for successful extraction has been lacking. Now, technology has caught up with desire, and management regimes are needed to guide human use of these important resource domains. In The Global Commons, Susan Buck considers the history of human interactions with each of the global commons areas and provides a concise yet thorough account of the evolution of management regimes for each area. She explains historical underpinnings of international law, examines the stakeholders involved, and discusses current policy and problems associated with it. Buck applies key analytical concepts drawn from institutional analysis and regime theory to examine how legal and political concerns have affected the evolution of management regimes for the global commons. She presents in-depth case studies of each of the four regimes, outlining the historical evolution of the commons -- development of interest in exploiting the resource domain; conflicts among nations over the use of the commons; and efforts to design institutions to control access to the domains and to regulate their use -- and concluding with a description of the management regime that eventually emerged from the informal and formal negotiations. The Global Commons provides a clear, useful introduction to the subject that will be of interest to general readers as well as to students in international relations and international environmental law, and in environmental law and policy generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear that international law is not yet equipped to handle the “ecological goods and services” that exist simultaneously within and outside of all states. The global commons have always been understood as geographical spaces that exist only outside the political borders of states. A vital good such as a stable climate exists both within and outside all states, and shows traditional legal approaches to be ecological nonsense. With the recent possibility of measuring and monitoring the state and functioning of the Earth System through the Planetary Boundaries framework, it is now possible to define a “Safe Operating Space of Humankind” corresponding to a biogeophysical state of Earth. In this sense, the Common Home of Humanity is not a planet with 510 million square kilometres, but is a specific favourable state of the Earth System. Recent major scientific advances anticipate a legal paradigm shift that could overcome the disconnection between ecological realities and existing legal frameworks. If we recognize this qualitative and non-geographic space as a Common Natural Intangible Heritage of Humankind, all positive and negative “externalities” end up being included within a new maintenance system of the Common Home.

Book excerpt: This book, which I am pleased to preface, is divided into two parts of great relevance to contemporary feminist studies, especially to the peripheral countries of the capitalist world. In it lie essays that I divide into two categories. On the one hand, we have articles that address structural issues involving human rights and, in particular, women’s rights. These are the texts that discuss the way in which the subject of human rights, in the contexts of the regional economic communities, are inserted; there are also the texts that address the bankruptcy of the patriarchal political system regarding the political representation of women in countries like India and Brazil; and the chapter in which the authors reflect on the need for an international feminist normative that breaks with the predominantly male discourse in international law, which disregards feminist proposals for normalization. The other part of the book covers varied subjects that connect with the feminist agenda and gender studies as well as contemporary identity processes. These are studies on the reproductive rights of women; sexual and domestic violence against women; environmental degradation and its relation to the patriarchal model to the detriment of traditional cultures; the immigration of women for marriage as a conscious choice; mental health and its relation to gender issues. Chapters: 1. REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES IN HUMAN AND WOMEN´S RIGHTS PROTECTION 2. WOMEN REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: A REFLECTION ABOUT INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS 3. WOMEN AND MENTAL HEALTH: A STUDY ON ADOLESCENCY AND GENDER IN BRAZIL 4. A PROGRAM TO COMBAT HARASSMENT AGAINST WOMEN: CONSIDERATION FOR IMPLEMENTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY 5. DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN BRAZIL: IS THERE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL? 6. ENVIRONMENTAL PATRIARCHY AND INDIGENOUS WOMEN: FROM INVISIBILITY TO RESISTANCE 7. MARRIAGE EMIGRATION OF WOMEN FROM RUSSIA 8. RESERVATIONS, INTERSECTIONALITY, AND WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN INDIAN POLITICS 9. FIGHTING AGAINST GENDER INEQUALITY IN PARLIAMENT: CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES FROM THE BRAZILIAN CASE 10. BUILDING UP AN INTERNATIONAL FEMINIST LAW

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award 2017 Mohawk midwife Katsi Cook lives in Akwesasne, an indigenous community in upstate New York that is downwind and downstream from three Superfund sites. For years she witnessed elevated rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and cancer in her town, ultimately drawing connections between environmental contamination and these maladies. When she brought her findings to environmental health researchers, Cook sparked the United States’ first large-scale community-based participatory research project. In The River Is in Us, author Elizabeth Hoover takes us deep into this remarkable community that has partnered with scientists and developed grassroots programs to fight the contamination of its lands and reclaim its health and culture. Through in-depth research into archives, newspapers, and public meetings, as well as numerous interviews with community members and scientists, Hoover shows the exact efforts taken by Akwesasne’s massive research project and the grassroots efforts to preserve the Native culture and lands. She also documents how contaminants have altered tribal life, including changes to the Mohawk fishing culture and the rise of diabetes in Akwesasne. Featuring community members such as farmers, health-care providers, area leaders, and environmental specialists, while rigorously evaluating the efficacy of tribal efforts to preserve its culture and protect its health, The River Is in Us offers important lessons for improving environmental health research and health care, plus detailed insights into the struggles and methods of indigenous groups. This moving, uplifting book is an essential read for anyone interested in Native Americans, social justice, and the pollutants contaminating our food, water, and bodies.

Book excerpt: Much of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Turkey was the result of widespread corruption between the construction industry and government officials. Corruption is part of everyday public life and we tend to take it for granted. However, preventing corruption helps to raise city revenues, improve service delivery, stimulate public confidence and participation, and win elections. This book is designed to help citizens and public officials diagnose, investigate and prevent various kinds of corrupt and illicit behaviour. It focuses on systematic corruption rather than the free-lance activity of a few law-breakers, and emphasises practical preventive measures rather than purely punitive or moralistic campaigns.
