Book excerpt: If flat-pack furniture and expensive designer pieces aren’t really your thing, and you’d rather make your own cushion cover than buy it, then Homespun Style is for you. Showcasing inspiring homes around the world, the book reflects our growing passion for crafting, stitching, and painting. These are homes packed with personality and interest, full of homemade pieces, restored junk-store or yard-sale finds and one-off treasures. Interiors stylist Selina Lake and writer Joanna Simmons will show you how this homey, crafty look has been given a modern twist with vivid colors, tactile fabrics, and bold combinations. The book begins with the Themes, from the basics of modern craft to making color and pattern work. It also focuses on imaginative ways to recycle and reuse, from transforming furniture with a lick of paint to finding inspired new uses for everyday items. Next, Details looks at textiles, furniture, and display, while the third section, Spaces, shows how the style works beautifully in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, children’s rooms, workrooms, and even out of doors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond birthday parties, anniversaries, holidays, and holy days, there is the every day. And while the loss of the first tooth or the first day of school may seem like normal, ordinary occurrences, these authors show that even "just because" events are enough reason to celebrate the One who gives us life each day. There is spirituality behind all celebration. With more than 200 inventive ideas plus Christian inspiration, brief reflections, and biblical examples of everyday celebrations, the authors give concrete, practical, and tangible ways to bring that spirituality into everyday. Readers will be encouraged to create their own family traditions and bring faith to life by making home a place where Christ, family, and friendships can be celebrated openly and often-because life doesn't have to be ordinary.

Book excerpt: Montana Territory in 1883 was a dangerous place—especially for a blind woman struggling to make her way through an early winter snowstorm. Undaunted, Noelle Kramer fought to remain independent. But then a runaway horse nearly plunged her into a rushing, ice-choked river, before a stranger's strong, sure hand saved her from certain death. And yet this was no stranger. Though she could not know it, her rescuer was rancher Thad McKaslin, the man who had once loved her more than life itself. Losing her had shaken all his most deeply held beliefs. Now he wondered if the return of this strong woman was a sign that somehow he could find his way home.
Book Synopsis The Age of Homespun by : Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Download or read book The Age of Homespun written by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-08-26 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They began their existence as everyday objects, but in the hands of award-winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, fourteen domestic items from preindustrial America–ranging from a linen tablecloth to an unfinished sock–relinquish their stories and offer profound insights into our history. In an age when even meals are rarely made from scratch, homespun easily acquires the glow of nostalgia. The objects Ulrich investigates unravel those simplified illusions, revealing important clues to the culture and people who made them. Ulrich uses an Indian basket to explore the uneasy coexistence of native and colonial Americans. A piece of silk embroidery reveals racial and class distinctions, and two old spinning wheels illuminate the connections between colonial cloth-making and war. Pulling these divergent threads together, Ulrich demonstrates how early Americans made, used, sold, and saved textiles in order to assert their identities, shape relationships, and create history.

Book Synopsis Eighteenth-Century Women Writers and the Gentleman's Liberation Movement by : Megan A. Woodworth
Download or read book Eighteenth-Century Women Writers and the Gentleman's Liberation Movement written by Megan A. Woodworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth-century English novel, the question of feminism has usually been explored with respect to how women writers treat their heroines and how they engage with contemporary political debates, particularly those relating to the French Revolution. Megan Woodworth argues that women writers' ideas about their own liberty are also present in their treatment of male characters. In positing a 'Gentleman's Liberation Movement,' she suggests that Frances Burney, Charlotte Smith, Jane West, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen all used their creative powers to liberate men from the very institutions and ideas about power, society, and gender that promote the subjection of women. Their writing juxtaposes the role of women in the private spheres with men's engagement in political structures and successive wars for independence (the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars). The failures associated with fighting these wars and the ideological debates surrounding them made plain, at least to these women writers, that in denying the universality of these natural freedoms, their liberating effects would be severely compromised. Thus, to win the same rights for which men fought, women writers sought to remake men as individuals freed from the tyranny of their patriarchal inheritance.
Book Synopsis Homespun Devotions by : Cheryl E Smith
Download or read book Homespun Devotions written by Cheryl E Smith and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian living is like a quilt-multi-colored scraps of wisdom gleaned and assembled one stitch at a time. We learn as we go, as the common thread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is woven throughout the everyday moments, events, and situations we encounter. Only He can tie the pieces together and create something of beauty that will serve to warm the hearts of others and surround them with His grace. "Homespun Devotions: Volume One" begins a series of books that record the piecing together of many of the stories of my life and the rich spiritual truths God has imparted along the way. As you read these homespun narratives of family, love, marriage, motherhood, friendship, and the music that is such a part of my heritage, you will discover glimpses into moments of the soul-searching and intense struggles I have experienced while journeying to a place of complete surrender to the One who bled and died for me. I point you to no denomination, religious group, or sect-only to the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ, where redemption, restoration, healing, and peace still freely and lavishly flow. He loves you with a never-ending, unconditional love-I pray you embrace this truth afresh and with a deeper persuasion as you read.

Book Synopsis A Lover's Quarrel by : Carmine Starnino
Download or read book A Lover's Quarrel written by Carmine Starnino and published by The Porcupine's Quill. This book was released on 2004 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already an award-winning poet, Carmine Starnino has also made his mark as a literary critic of great pluck, probity and irreverence. His highly regarded, often highly controversial writings on poetry have enlivened -- and often enraged -- the Canadian literary scene since they first began appearing in the late 1990s. He has tackled the careers of some of this country's most notable poets (among them Irving Layton, Michael Ondaatje, Anne Carson, Tim Lilburn, Susan Musgrave, Christopher Dewdney) and done so in prose of great subtlety and style. Indeed, in Starnino's literary criticism seditiousness and insight are made to live inside sentences that always square their shoulders and draw themselves to their full verbal height. A Lover's Quarrel culls some of the highlights of Starnino's dissenting exploits, and includes the never-before-published title essay, an ambitious reassessment of Canadian poetry. For readers unfamiliar with Starnino's criticism, the release of A Lover's Quarrel furnishes the perfect opportunity to read one of the few critics in Canada who can speak his mind and speak it well.
