Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lost Legionary in South Africa "Daily Chronicle," 12th August 1911. "The book gives us something of the bracing air of the land of the Maories, with a few genuine pictures, lightly touched, of the tough characters, the hard nails, the queer cards of the old Colonial days." "The Sketch," 23rd August 1911. "Little Englanders, read at once Maori Browne's With the Lost Legion in New Zealand, mark the unadvertised heroism, the fierce bravery, the silent sufferings of the pioneers who fought in the New Zealand War from 1866 - 1871, and have the strength of mind to be converted. And Imperialists, go and do likewise! The book is of supreme interest." "Book Monthly," August 1911. "A book of real new adventure and fighting, also valuable for its information." "Birmingham Daily Post," 18th August 1911. "Colonel Hamilton-Browne, in his downright straightforward way, has given us as realistic a picture of bush fighting as we have ever read. ... Almost every page is crowded with incident, for the most part, of gallant conduct, cruelty or hardship, but just occasionally of humour. The whole book is vastly interesting, and written in an eminently modest vein." "The London Observer," 1st September 1911. "The story is admirably told, and is brimful of interest and excitement." Book excerpt: An essential first hand account of the Anglo-Zulu War The author of this book, sometimes known as 'Maori Browne, ' had a long career as a colonial soldier. He left posterity with three books based either on his career or the experiences of men he knew. They focus on warfare as experienced by men like himself-tough, resourceful individuals who enjoyed fighting and were expert marksmen, horsemen and seasoned campaigners. Irrespective of who they were and where they fought Browne affectionately refers to them as the 'Lost Legion'-those upon whose blood and toil the British Empire (in his opinion) was built but who received scant recognition, praise or reward for their sacrifices. Browne writes in the thoroughly entertaining and often amusing 'gung-ho' style of the Victorian Imperialist. He intends to 'spin a good yarn' and in that he succeeds magnificently, possibly 'with advantages.' Some doubt has been cast on Browne's veracity since his own Maori War experiences as a despatch rider took place after the end of hostilities, however, to be fair to him, the principal figure in With the Lost Legion in New Zealand bears a fictional name though the contents are undoubtedly mostly factual. The anecdotal 'yarns' in Camp Fire Yarns of the Lost Legion are also attributed to others. There can be no doubt about Browne's Zulu War experiences however. He writes in the first person and was present as the British invaded Zululand. As an officer of the N. N. C. Browne was present at Isandlwhana camp both before and after the battle and took an active role in the campaign making his a genuine 'first hand' voice of the period. For those interested in the wars of the Queen Empress all three of Browne's books are available from Leonaur in a complementary set. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lost Legionary in South Africa Before saying anything about this present work I think it is my bounden duty to tender my hearty and sincere thanks to the innumerable critics, both British and Colonial, who so unanimously reviewed my first attempt at literature, With the Lost Legion in New Zealand, with a kindness that has greatly surprised me and in a manner, so obviously to myself, closing their eyes to the manifold faults in the work and most probably actuated by their sportsmanlike wishes to help a worn-out old war dog along the rough road of his declining years, have held out a helping hand, tried to lighten his swag and cheer him along the line of march by making the most of the few good things in his book and treating with leniency its many failings. I hereby again gratefully thank the members of the Press and many of my old comrades for their generous sympathy and warm support. Book excerpt: Between 1838 and 1888 the recently formed Zulu kingdom in southeastern Africa was directly challenged by the incursion of Boer pioneers aggressively seeking new lands on which to set up their independent republics, by English-speaking traders and hunters establishing their neighboring colony, and by imperial Britain intervening in Zulu affairs to safeguard Britain's position as the paramount power in southern Africa. As a result, the Zulu fought to resist Boer invasion in 1838 and British invasion in 1879. The internal strains these wars caused to the fabric of Zulu society resulted in civil wars in 1840, 1856, and 1882-1884, and Zululand itself was repeatedly partitioned between the Boers and British. In 1888, the old order in Zululand attempted a final, unsuccessful uprising against recently imposed British rule. This tangled web of invasions, civil wars, and rebellion is complex. The Historical Dictionary of the Zulu Wars unravels and elucidates Zulu history during the 50 years between the initial settler threat to the kingdom and its final dismemberment and absorption into the colonial order. A chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, maps, photos, and over 900 cross-referenced dictionary entries that cover the military, politics, society, economics, culture, and key players during the Zulu Wars make this an important reference for everyone from high school students to academics.

The Victorian soldier in Africa re-examines the campaign experience of British soldiers in Africa during the period, 1874–1902 – the zenith of the Victorian imperial expansion – and does so from the perspective of the regimental soldier. The book utilises an unprecedented number of letters and diaries, written by regimental officers and other ranks, to allow soldiers to speak for themselves about their experience of colonial warfare. The sources demonstrate the adaptability of the British army in fighting in different climates, over demanding terrain and against a diverse array of enemies. They also uncover soldiers’ responses to army reforms of the era as well as the response to the introduction of new technologies of war. Moreover, the book provides commentary on soldiers’ views of commanding officers and politicians alongside assessment of war correspondents, colonial auxiliaries and African natives in their roles as bearers, allies and enemies. This book reveals new insights on imperial and racial attitudes within the army, on relations between soldiers and the media and the production of information and knowledge from frontline to homefront. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in imperial history, Victorian studies, military history and colonial warfare.
