Book Synopsis The Order of the Acquisition of the English Article System by Polish Learners in Different Proficiency Groups by : Artur Swiateka
Download or read book The Order of the Acquisition of the English Article System by Polish Learners in Different Proficiency Groups written by Artur Swiateka and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a juxtaposition of studies conducted in different proficiency groups (elementary, intermediate and advanced) among Polish students studying English. The theoretical section of the book discusses all necessary theories, both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, related to the acquisition of the English article system in both L1 and L2. The empirical part of the book concerns the studies carried out among Polish study participants. The results of the studies indicate that L2 Polish users acquire the English article system better as their linguistic competences advance. These outcomes prove that L2 acquisition of the English article system is facilitated better in the advanced group of subjects in contrast to the least advanced group, which had tremendous difficulties with the acquisition and subsequent relevant use of the English article system.
Book Synopsis Adult Language Acquisition: Volume 1, Field Methods by : Clive Perdue
Download or read book Adult Language Acquisition: Volume 1, Field Methods written by Clive Perdue and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes present the methodology and results of an international research project on second language acquisition by adult immigrants. This project went beyond other studies in at least three respects: in the number of languages studied simultaneously; in the organisation of co-ordinated longitudinal studies in different linguistic environments; and in the type and range of linguistic phenomena investigated. It placed the study of second languages and inter-ethnic discourse on a firm empirical footing. Volume 1 explains and evaluates the research design adopted for the project. Volume 2 summarises the cross-linguistic results, under two main headings: native/non-native speaker interaction, and language production. Together they present the reader with a complete research procedure, and in doing so, make explicit the links between research questions, methodology, and results.

Book Synopsis Second Language Acquisition and Linguistic Variation by : Robert Bayley
Download or read book Second Language Acquisition and Linguistic Variation written by Robert Bayley and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume corrects the relative neglect in Second Language Acquisition studies of the quantitative study of language variation and provides insights into such issues as language transfer, acquisition through exposure, language universals, learner's age and so forth. These studies bolster the idea that a full account of SLA development (and, hence, a theory of SLA) must be built on not only detailed accounts of interlanguage data but also on a wide appeal to factors which govern the psycholinguistic bases of SLA. An important addition to the volume is a comprehensive guide to both the DOS and Macintosh versions of the VARBRUL statistical program used by variationists.

Book excerpt: Exploring the canonical topics in second language acquisition, this book introduces different theoretical perspectives and explores the types of research carried out in the field. Individual chapters have been written so that they can stand alone, giving instructors and students total control over the pace and order of study, and the book is written in an accessible conversational style, inviting engagement with this dynamic topic. Second Language Acquisition: - Surveys key studies in the acquisition of morphology, syntax and phonology - Features a whole chapter dedicated to bilingualism, tying together two closely-linked fields - Examines the role and implications of pedagogy in language teaching contexts - Employs end-of-chapter questions, concept practice and suggestions for further reading to encourage deeper engagement with topic
Book Synopsis EFL Learners' Acquisition of the English Article System by : Mahmoud Hajjar
Download or read book EFL Learners' Acquisition of the English Article System written by Mahmoud Hajjar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses several issues that have been controversial in the literature surrounding second language (L2) acquisition, including the role that the first language (L1) plays in development, the ability of L2 learners to acquire properties of functional categories not realised in their L1, the nature of L2 development itself, and the extent to which such development is constrained by innate linguistic capacities (universal grammar). These issues are considered by investigating the acquisition of the English articles by speakers of an L1 that has an article system encoding definiteness (Arabic), and an L1 that lacks articles (Japanese), at different proficiency levels in English. Those who will find this book useful include policy makers in language education as well as students and their teachers. Researchers in the field of second language acquisition can benefit from reading this book to keep abreast of the latest developments in this area in the hope of stimulating further research.
