Book Synopsis Murder In The Time of Corona by : Aniruddha Bose
Download or read book Murder In The Time of Corona written by Aniruddha Bose and published by Smriti Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder... The word itself is sufficient to raise a multitude of feelings. To some it is fear, to others it is repulsion, to many a gruesome nauseating feeling and to a few a mental stimulus to solve the mystery. Whatever the feeling it raises, almost each and everyone likes to read/see a murder mystery book/movie. To fulfil this demand of the human mind, there are a plethora of diverse genres of murder stories. One of those story telling styles is, what can be dubbed a ‘Closed System Mystery’, that is, where the crime and its solution concur in a closed system, which might be a running train or a house amidst nowhere. There are some famous classic murder mysteries of this type in world bibliography. To this genre now we can proudly add a book from one of the very best mystery story tellers of our time - Dr. Aniruddha Bose. This time he spins his mystery in a set up which is very contemporary, viz. the ‘Lockdown’ due to the Covid19 pandemic. The choice of this phenomenon is a very clever step for the story-teller, because the lockdown scenario has converted the whole country in a Closed System. The lockdown practically bars movements of all the characters in this whodunit story, thus making the police job extremely difficult, almost impossible. The brilliance of the idea to set a murder mystery in such a setting is simply the stroke of a genius. An ageing actress is murdered, and the police investigation is severely handicapped by the restrictions imposed by the nation-wide lockdown. Here the author plays his trump card. By sheer power of story telling through digital methods, he takes the reader through a tumultuous journey covering five decades. As it is a mystery story, I cannot divulge anything more. That privilege is reserved for the reader. Hopefully, the story will appeal to everyone.
Book Synopsis Murder Unpunished by : Thornton W. Price
Download or read book Murder Unpunished written by Thornton W. Price and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November of 1977, Terry Lee Farmer, a white inmate at Arizona State Prison in Florence, walked up to black prisoner Waymond Small in front of sixty witnesses and stabbed him in the heart with a shank. Small had agreed to testify before the state legislature about gang violence inside Arizona State Prison and was murdered the day before his scheduled appearance. This murder proved the catalyst for an all-out war between the State of Arizona and the Aryan Brotherhood. Through five trials, Farmer claimed self-defense and the jurors acquitted all ten of his co-conspirators. Thornton Price, one of the defense attorneys, now tells how Farmer and Small became cannon fodder in this war to reclaim ArizonaÕs prisons from rival gangs. These gangsÑthe Aryan Brotherhood, the Mau Maus, and the Mexican MafiaÑwere suspected of committing more than a dozen murders over the previous two years, motivating politicians to crack down after the violence could no longer be ignored or contained. To reconstruct the case, Price reviewed 16,000 pages of court records and conducted interviews with key participants to piece together an insiderÕs account of the crime and the politics behind its investigation. Prison murders should be easy to solve, but investigators quickly learned that the convictsÕ code of silence makes these cases often impossible to win in court. Price focuses on the special problems posed by prison crime by getting inside the skins of men like murderer Terry "Crazy" Farmer and William "Red Dog" Howard, one of the Florence Eleven and a founder of the Aryan Brotherhood. He also presents the perspectives of state investigators and reveals how they calculated to pit black witnesses against white killers until one black would break the code of silence and provoke feuding within the Brotherhood. Murder Unpunished tells how societyÕs most outrageous criminals ran the prison through gang violence as outside the walls Arizona struggled to outgrow its Wild West past. Like few other books, it reveals how prisons incubate predatory criminals and gangs, and it exposes the unique difficulties of prosecuting prison crimes. It is a gripping account that cuts to the heart of our penal system and a cautionary tale for citizens who prefer to keep prisons out of sight, out of mind.
Book Synopsis The Pajaro Murder by : David Doglietto
Download or read book The Pajaro Murder written by David Doglietto and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in a state prison is seldom seen and even more seldom understood. It is a strange and often dangerous world. Scott Doggett is a seasoned prison investigator with twenty-eight years of experience and the goal of a comfortable retirement somewhere on the approaching horizon. Daily he accepts the challenges of conducting major criminal investigations in the custodial setting. The Pajaro Murder and Other Stories is based, in part, on actual investigations conducted at California state prisons, with the greatest due deference to their investigators. The stories involve a world that is, for the most part, unknown to anyone outside the correctional system. It is, at times, an unbelievable world, but it is a real world. More than anything, these stories are lessons in investigative procedure, interview techniques, and the application of forensic sciences in solving crimes. The exact details and names of all involved have been changed to protect the innocent, as well as the guilty.

Book excerpt: “Incisive wit . . . a sleuth worthy of comparison to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot or Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone.”—James W. Hall Diana O’Hehir beguiled audiences with I Wish This War Were Over, runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize. Now, she presents a mystery set in that most shadowy of landscapes: the human mind. Green Beach Manor, set on the jagged cliffs of the California coast, calls itself “A Colony for Independently Functioning Adults.” It costs a pretty penny—and Carla Day is confident that her affectionate-but-confused elderly father is getting the best care there. An accomplished former Egyptologist, he now lives in a fusion of past and present. The staff hasn’t a clue what he’s ranting about—and they’re ready to send him to what they privately call No Hope House. Then a string of suspicious events unravels. A fire starts inexplicably in the beauty parlor, and some drugs go missing. Carla, hoping to keep a close eye on her dad, lands a job as an aide at the Manor. But management has one condition: Spy for us, figure out who’s doing this—and you and your father can stay. Soon, a guest swallows glass hidden in her food. An employee dies an eerie death. And Carla’s father begins rambling not only about Egyptian pyramids, but also about a dead woman on the nearby beach. The answer may lie in an ancient Egyptian tomb. Or maybe it’s somewhere further—in the deep recesses of a brilliant old man’s memory. “One of the most intellectually delightful murder mysteries ever written . . . The narrating voice is a pleasure from beginning to end, and the reader comes away with an education in ancient Egyptology!”—Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments

Download or read book Math Murder in Media Manufactured Madness written by Bhaskaran Raman and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-29 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 2.5 years since the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic, people have felt extreme fear. Reason, rationality, basic math and logic have taken a severe beating. This book documents the math murder in the mad fear largely manufactured by relentless propaganda in the media. It is meant for those who want to reflect on the planet-wide panic surrounding Covid-19, to examine if it was justified, to sift truth from propaganda, to learn how we can possibly prevent such mistakes in the future. It is especially meant for the next generation, who were affected least by the virus itself, yet affected most by the irrational measures in the name of public health. They must know how the adults on the planet abandoned reason for madness, rationality for fear, and basic math for obvious absurdity. Most parts are meant to be understandable with only a secondary-school or high-school mathematics background.
