Book Synopsis Miscellanies by Henry Fielding, Esq by : Henry Fielding
Download or read book Miscellanies by Henry Fielding, Esq written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 1993-08 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the fantasy, A Journey from This World to the Next, and two plays: the farce Eurydice, and The Wedding Day, a revision of an early intrigue comedy. Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, first published as a three-volume set in 1743, consists in its entirety of a major work of fiction, The History of the life of the Late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Jonathan Wild takes its title from the 'thief-taker' and gangleader of that name who has hanged in 1725, but in Fielding's hands the history of Wild is transformed into a mock-historical work of sustained irony aimed at all who would be 'great men'. The general introduction to this edition sets the novel against its historical and biographical background and argues against the view, common and since the mid-nineteenth century, that it is a personal satire directed at the figure of Sir Robert Walpole. In both the general and the textual introductions, the editors also offer a fresh view on questions about the date and history of the work's composition. Full explanatory notes and commentary place Fielding's allusions and details in their contemporary context. As in previous volumes of the Wesleyan Edition, this provides a critical, unmodernized text, based on the Greg-Bowers 'Rationale of Copy-text'. The version is that of the first edition, with an appendix giving al variants in wording and presentation of the 1754 revision. In his introduction the textual editor lays out the rationale for his choice version. This volume also includes, for the first time in a modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by textual author.

Book Synopsis Henry Fielding by : Thomas R. Cleary
Download or read book Henry Fielding written by Thomas R. Cleary and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate and comprehensive study of the political aspects of Fielding’s art has been sorely needed. As a result of decades of work by literary scholars and a series of great historians, such a study is finally possible. This volume addresses that need, and, in the light of a recent revival of interest in Fielding’s work, it arrives most opportunely. The author offers here a wide-ranging focus and a firm grip on the shifting complexities of Fielding’s political situations—the loyalties and enmities, factional alignments and fractious rhetoric—that allow a satisfactory understanding of Fielding’s political writing. Political writing in Fielding’s day, as in ours, was topical, concerned with evanescent problems and day-to-day needs that were familiar to contemporaries, but that are now recaptured only with greatest difficulty. This study constitutes a thorough reconstruction of Fielding’s political context and extricates from the context Fielding’s own political endeavours. Cleary’s work will make many of Felding’s previously unstudied work accessible to students and scholars of eighteenth-century English literature. A necessary point of reference to both literary specialists and historians concerned with eighteenth-century England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now best known for three great novels - Tom Jones, Joseph Andrews and Amelia - Henry Fielding (1707–54) was one of the most controversial figures of his time. Prominent first as a playwright, then as a novelist and political journalist, and finally as a justice of peace, Fielding made a substantial contribution to eighteenth-century culture, and was hugely influential in the development of the novel as a form, both in Britain and more widely in Europe. This collection of specially-commissioned essays by leading scholars describes and analyses the many facets of Fielding's work in theatre, fiction, journalism and politics. In addition it assesses his unique contribution to the rise of the novel as the dominant literary form, the development of the law, and the political and literary culture of eighteenth-century Britain. Including a chronology and guide to further reading, this volume offers a comprehensive account of Fielding's life and work.
