Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Movement began in the Church of England in 1833 and extended to the rest of the Anglican Communion, influencing other denominations as well. It was an attempt to remind the church of its divine authority, independent of the state, and to recall it to its Catholic heritage deriving from the ancient and medieval periods, as well as the Caroline Divines of 17th-century England. The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a comprehensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, chapters in books, periodical articles, manuscripts, microforms, and tape recordings dealing with the Movement and its influence on art, literature, and music, as well as theology; authors include scholars in these fields, as well as the fields of history, political science, and the natural sciences. The first edition of The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders and its supplement contained comprehensive coverage through 1983 and 1990, respectively. The Second Edition, with over 8,000 citations covering many languages, extends coverage through 2001; it also includes many earlier items not previously listed, corrections and additions to earlier items, and a listing of electronic sources.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Letter to the Right Honourable Lord in Reply to His Lordship's Remarks on the Author's Letter on Transubstantiation With regard to Transubstantiation, - the main object of your former doubts, this, you say, is so utterly incomprehensible, - so repugnant to the dictates of my Reason, - that I cannot, for the life of me, bring myself to believe it. For what, you add, is the use of my reason, if it be not to guide me P Was it not, for this very end, that God bestowed the invaluable gift upon me? Accordingly, I consider myself justified in follow ing the; guidance of its directions: and it is upon the score of these, that I reject that mystery. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A critical analysis of courtly love and medieval troubador literature, this book claims that both traditions were instrumental in the construction of the modern subject and its preparation for life in the highly regulated societies of the modern world. Relating troubadour texts to the rise of commerce, luxury commodities, social differentiation, the centralization of authority, and the crusades, the author proposes that western romantic love, from its courtly beginnings, eroticized the forms and values of the early European commercial economy and nation-states -- playing a key role in the subjection of medieval hearts, minds, and bodies to the disciplines of emerging modern powers." -- Back cover.

Book Synopsis The Muslims of British India by : Hardy
Download or read book The Muslims of British India written by Hardy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Hardy has attempted a general history of British India's Muslims with a deeper perspective. He shows how the interplay of memories of past Muslim supremacy, Islamic religious aspirations and modern Muslim social and economic anxieties with the political needs of the alien ruling power gradually fostered a separate Muslim politics. Dr Hardy argues (contrary to the usual view) that Muslims were able to take political initiatives because, in the region of modern Uttar Pradesh, British rule before 1857 and even the events of the Mutiny and Rebellion of 1857-8 had not been economically disastrous for most of them. He stresses the force of religion in the growth of Muslim political separatism, showing how the 'modernists' kept the conversation among Muslims within Islamic postulates and underlining the role of the traditional scholars in heightening popular religious feeling. Regarding any sense of Muslim political unity and nationhood as an outcome of the period of British rule, Dr Hardy shows the limitations and frailty of that unity and nationhood by 1947.
