Book excerpt: A Layman's Look at Ruth provides pastors, Sunday school teachers, evangelists, and any student of the Bible with a comprehensive insight into the story of Ruth and her kinsman-redeemer, Boaz. She journeys to a land foreign to her with her mother-in-law. Due to her faith in the God of Israel, she and her mother-in-law are sustained. She eventually learns that Boaz is a relative of her late husband, and that she has the right to claim him as her husband. She does, and her family becomes part of the lineage of King David and the Lord Jesus. She is faithful when many would have faltered, and she is loyal to her family and her God. It is a story of love and suspense, and this simple commentary's goal is to give readers a better understanding of this wonderful book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Layman’s Guide to Revelation is a compilation of renowned expositors with different interpretive views of eschatology. The book guides its readers into an in depth study of the Revelation using the critical analysis of commentators of the past to help the reader better understand the present times and God’s plan for the future. The guide defines key words in the Greek translation, and explains the symbolic use of numbers, colors and the foreshadowing of crucial aspects of Israel’s history which will aid in deciphering the visions given to the apostle. The guide further explains the types and use of the Old Testament prophets. By understanding the Old Testament Scriptures the student will better appreciate the background of the language and the Hebraic symbolism used in Revelation. The guide also sheds light on the use of foreshadowing of past empires used in the Old Testament that will further aid in the interpretation of the future and the end-times that we are assuredly apart. The guide takes the reader verse by verse; chapter by chapter through the commentators interpretive views so they can study at their own pace and arrive at their own conclusions. The book also includes a commentary by the author that offers his own insights into Revelation that will surely be of use to those who look to God’s word to better understand the times we live.

There moves through it a beauty and a serenity which no mortal man can fully explain. It reassures our hearts, strengthens our resolve, and leads us into personal contact with God, our Father.” In this moving book by “an ordinary man and a child of God,” Phillip Keller takes each phrase of the Lord's Prayer one-by-one, unfolding it in wonderful detail and sharing insights he’s gained and experiences he’s enjoyed. Next to Psalm 23, the Lord’s Prayer is perhaps the most universally beloved passage in Scripture. It has been repeated millions of times by countless individuals for nearly 20 centuries. Yet, in spite of so much use and familiarity it has never lost its luster. A Layman’s Look at the Lord’s Prayer presents that luster in a fresh way to help you rediscover its incredible power. Book excerpt: Almost without fail, most commentaries on the book of Ruth say that the book of Ruth is a beautiful picture of the Gentile Bride of Christ, but is she? Are they just parroting what they were taught without considering for a moment that what is believed by the masses may actually be wrong? Students of the word of God should be allowed to hear both sides of an argument before deciding what they believe about this amazing book, but that is not what has happened. Pick up any commentary on the book of Ruth and you will find basically the same teachings originating from the same premise in all of them, and the only differences being the name of the author and the design on the book's cover. If you are searching for truth from the word of God, you need to confirm everything you have been taught by the "religious experts" on this subject as well. I hope you will consider what is presented in this book and search the scriptures daily to see if these things are so, just like the Bereans did in Act 17:10-12.Types in the book of Ruth The book of Ruth is a historical album of one of Israel's many bright spots in their past as well as a prophetic photo album of their future. The key to understanding the book is to remember that each of the main players in this story represents a greater spiritual meaning than is seen at first glance. Ladies First We will first take a look at the two prominent women in the book and what their lives portray in this story. Naomi represents the nation of Israel who leaves God's place of blessing (Bethlehem) during a time of famine to find bread for her family in a Gentile land. Ruth represents the Gentiles that are blessed for blessing Israel and who come to trust in the God of Israel. Ruth, a Gentile herself, blessed Israel through Naomi and she was blessed because of that reason. See Genesis 12:1-3. Ruth's name is mentioned in only two books of the bible, the one that bears her name, and in the opening verses of the book of Matthew:

Book excerpt: The legitimate and illegitimate use of incentives in society today Incentives can be found everywhere—in schools, businesses, factories, and government—influencing people's choices about almost everything, from financial decisions and tobacco use to exercise and child rearing. So long as people have a choice, incentives seem innocuous. But Strings Attached demonstrates that when incentives are viewed as a kind of power rather than as a form of exchange, many ethical questions arise: How do incentives affect character and institutional culture? Can incentives be manipulative or exploitative, even if people are free to refuse them? What are the responsibilities of the powerful in using incentives? Ruth Grant shows that, like all other forms of power, incentives can be subject to abuse, and she identifies their legitimate and illegitimate uses. Grant offers a history of the growth of incentives in early twentieth-century America, identifies standards for judging incentives, and examines incentives in four areas—plea bargaining, recruiting medical research subjects, International Monetary Fund loan conditions, and motivating students. In every case, the analysis of incentives in terms of power yields strikingly different and more complex judgments than an analysis that views incentives as trades, in which the desired behavior is freely exchanged for the incentives offered. Challenging the role and function of incentives in a democracy, Strings Attached questions whether the penchant for constant incentivizing undermines active, autonomous citizenship. Readers of this book are sure to view the ethics of incentives in a new light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Ruth is a tale of charm and delight, providing a contrast to the concurrent anarchy depicted in the book of Judges. Telling the simple story of a family who are struck by tragedy, but experience love and acceptance in unexpected ways, in Ruth’s narrative we are clearly shown God's guiding hand as everything endured leads to the births of both King David and, finally, Jesus Christ. David Atkinson illuminates The Message of Ruth in this encouraging and thoughtful commentary, showing us how theologically the story of Ruth is a story about God’s providence. From Naomi and Ruth herself to Boaz, he guides us through the narrative and explores how each character fits into God’s purposes for history and what that means for us living as Christians today. A revised edition in the much-loved Bible Speaks Today series of commentaries, The Message of Ruth offers a thorough, readable exposition of both the Biblical text and what it can teach modern Christians. Used by Bible students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for students and preachers who are looking to broaden their knowledge and understanding of Scripture and its continued relevance in the twenty-first century. This beautifully redesigned edition has been sensitively updated to include modern references and use the NIV Bible text. The Message of Ruth will be helpful for anyone looking for accessible commentaries on Ruth that explore it more deeply, considering its meaning both for its original audience and for Christians reading it today.
