Book excerpt: "A Woman's Reason" is certainly one of the most ambitious novels Mr. Howells has written, not merely because it is so long, but because the author has reached out for effects which he neglected in his earlier books. It is not a radical departure from his established methods, but it indicates a larger and broader conception of the scope, the opportunities, and the resources of his art. The story of Helen Harkness's struggles has an enduring claim upon every reader's sympathy, the incidents of the book are spirited, and the movement is alert, vigorous, and at times highly dramatic in its surprises and suspended interest. The author is so loyal to his heroine that she is rarely permitted to disappear from the scene, but such constancy denotes a steadfastness of purpose and leads to a concentration of interest; this method is always artistic if it can be sustained without becoming tiresome, and there are few para graphs in "A Woman's Reason" which even one who reads for the story alone will care to skip. The keynote is sounded within the first few pages, but the revelation of the motive does not clog the interest of development, and the intelligent reader is the more gratified because the author has paid him the compliment of taking him into his confidence. The story is that of a Boston girl who has been reared without any thought of possible necessity for self-support, is left almost penniless at the death of her father, and surrenders voluntarily the small remnant of the paternal estate to which she had a perfect legal title in order to satisfy her own high sense of principle. She refuses to be de pendent upon friends, and she is separated from her sweetheart by a misunderstanding for which she was to blame. These are conditions which could be made heartrending or sensational, according to the treatment there of; Mr. Howells has the delicate art of making them interesting and sympathetic without straining the probabilities or exciting morbid sentiment.

Book excerpt: 29-year-old Pauline works too hard for every cent she ever made until she meets Anton. He's willing to give her more cash than she's ever imagined . . . for one small favor. Like any classic pulp story, Down Girl is about the struggle between greed, weakness, and the exercise of pure sexual power. Not shy in its sanguine portrayal of the darker side of the human character, this book is a carnivore in the vegan world of literature.

Book excerpt: Leading Ladies: Twenty-One of Tacoma's Women of Destiny, is the fourth in the Society's popular "Twenty-One Tales" series of local history curriculum supplements. Written by Deb Freedman and Michael Ann Konek, the 48-page title presents much-needed biographical information in an engaging story format. The project's goal is to provide accessible local history curriculum material for teachers and students by highlighting twenty-one women who reflect a balance of diversity in time period, field of work, and ethnicity. As with earlier titles, over 1500 copies will be distributed free of charge to local elementary schools. The publishing project has also been supported by women. The authors donated their research, writing, and editing time. A team of twenty-one women helped select the subjects. The cover bears a painting by the noted artist Abby Williams Hill, from the Abby Williams Hill collection at the University of Puget Sound. Twenty-one women's groups or individuals made contributions toward the hard costs of the project, including a donation from Columbia Bank in memory of the late Melanie Dressel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These thirteen original essays are provocative explorations in the construction and representation of self in America's colonial and early republican eras. Highlighting the increasing importance of interdisciplinary research for the field of early American history, these leading scholars in the field extend their reach to literary criticism, anthropology, psychology, and material culture. The collection is organized into three parts--Histories of Self, Texts of Self, and Reflections on Defining Self. Individual essays examine the significance of dreams, diaries, and carved chests, murder and suicide, Indian kinship, and the experiences of African American sailors. Gathered in celebration of the Institute of Early American History and Culture's fiftieth anniversary, these imaginative inquiries will stimulate critical thinking and open new avenues of investigation on the forging of self-identity in early America. The contributors are W. Jeffrey Bolster, T. H. Breen, Elaine Forman Crane, Greg Dening, Philip Greven, Rhys Isaac, Kenneth A. Lockridge, James H. Merrell, Donna Merwick, Mary Beth Norton, Mechal Sobel, Alan Taylor, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, and Richard White.
