Book Synopsis The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse by : Lori G. Beaman
Download or read book The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse written by Lori G. Beaman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the recent trend toward the transformation of religious symbols and practices into culture in Western democracies. Analyses of three legal cases involving religion in the public sphere are used to illuminate this trend: a municipal council chamber; a town hall; and town board meetings. Each case involves a different national context—Canada, France and the United States—and each illustrates something interesting about the shape-shifting nature of religion, specifically its flexibility and dexterity in the face of the secular, the religious and the plural. Despite the differences in national contexts, in each instance religion is transformed into culture or heritage by the courts to justify or excuse its presence and to distance the state from the possibility that it is violating legal norms of distance from religion. The cultural practice or symbol is represented as a shared national value or activity. Transforming the ‘Other’ into ‘Us’ through reconstitution is also possible. Finally, anxiety about the ‘Other’ becomes part of the story of rendering religion as culture, resulting in the impugning of anyone who dares to question the putative shared culture. The book will be essential reading for students, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of sociology of religion, religious studies, socio-legal studies, law and public policy, constitutional law, religion and politics, and cultural studies.
Download or read book Millie’s Quest written by Andrew Amann and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Who am I really?” That is the burning question that absorbs the mind of young Millie even as her talent for writing folklore is discovered and nurtured. She becomes something of a celebrity in her village in the heart of rural Trinidad as her stories get published in the newspapers. “If only her real daddy would see them and be moved to make himself known to her!” That’s her most fervent wish. How that would affect her life and the life of others is not of immediate concern. Her mother’s stubborn reticence to reveal his identity is beyond her comprehension. Her ambition is to become a teacher, but romance gets in the way, and she marries and goes to live in Sangre Grande. There, she picks up clues that she hopes will lead her to the identity of her real father. Her experiences make her realize that society’s prejudice against illegitimacy has its roots in religious practices which she would like to change. She also must develop ways of coping with a difficult situation as her marriage is in jeopardy.

Book Synopsis Alice Guy Blaché by : Alison McMahan
Download or read book Alice Guy Blaché written by Alison McMahan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over a hundred years after she started making films (which was considerably earlier than D. W. Griffith, Mabel Normand, and Lillian Gish began their careers), the life and work of Alice Guy Blache is still shrouded in myth and controversy." "Only a fraction of the approximately one thousand films that she directed still exist, and almost half of these have been found very recently. The films are spread out in archives all over the world. Not all of them are available for viewing, even to scholars, and many of them are in desperate need of conservation and preservation." "It is widely agreed that she was the first woman filmmaker but there is considerable debate as to whether she made the first ever fiction film. She played a key role in early sound film production, and yet this part of her career is almost always ignored. She is, to this day, the only women ever to have owned and run her own film studio. And yet she made her final film in 1920, at the age of 47, and died in New Jersey in 1968 - unacknowledged, unheralded, almost totally forgotten." "Ten years of research has enabled Alison McMahan to piece together the career of this extraordinary woman. What results is the first full-length treatment of Alice Guy Blache's work, the debunking of several long-standing myths about her and, ultimately, the emergence of a feminist figurehead of the filmmaking industry."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
