This book was released on 1994 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summaries from 49 published articles on tree volume and taper equations are presented for 39 tree species found in California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, southeast Alaska, Idaho, and western Montana. The summaries are organized by species and then by type of equation (volume or taper). Each summary describes the types of dependent variables predicted by the equations and the geographic location, number of trees, range in DBH, and range in total height for trees in the sample used to develop the equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silvicultural practices in the Douglas-fir region evolved through a combination of formal research, observation, and practical experience of forest managers and silviculturists, and changing economic and social factors. This process began more than a century ago and still continues. It has had a great influence on the economic well-being of the region and on the present characteristics of the regions forests. This long history is unknown to most of the public, and much of it is unfamiliar to many natural resource specialists outside (and even within) the field of silviculture. We trace the history of how we got where we are today and the contribution of silvicultural research to the evolution of forest practices. We give special attention to the large body of information developed in the first half of the past century that is becoming increasingly unfamiliar to both operational foresters andperhaps more importantlyto those engaged in forestry research. We also discuss some current trends in silviculture and silviculture-related research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation models are an established method used to investigate processes and solve practical problems in a wide variety of disciplines. Central to the concept of this second edition is the idea that environmental systems are complex, open systems. The authors present the diversity of approaches to dealing with environmental complexity and then encourage readers to make comparisons between these approaches and between different disciplines. Environmental Modelling: Finding Simplicity in Complexity 2nd edition is divided into four main sections: An overview of methods and approaches to modelling. State of the art for modelling environmental processes Tools used and models for management Current and future developments. The second edition evolves from the first by providing additional emphasis and material for those students wishing to specialize in environmental modelling. This edition: Focuses on simplifying complex environmental systems. Reviews current software, tools and techniques for modelling. Gives practical examples from a wide variety of disciplines, e.g. climatology, ecology, hydrology, geomorphology and engineering. Has an associated website containing colour images, links to WWW resources and chapter support pages, including data sets relating to case studies, exercises and model animations. This book is suitable for final year undergraduates and postgraduates in environmental modelling, environmental science, civil engineering and biology who will already be familiar with the subject and are moving on to specialize in the field. It is also designed to appeal to professionals interested in the environmental sciences, including environmental consultants, government employees, civil engineers, geographers, ecologists, meteorologists, and geochemists.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Softwood Tree Volume Equations for Major California Species Although the size of our sample was more than adequate, the reader should be aware of some important data deficiencies. First, two - thirds of the sample was drawn from trees measured many years ago. While we recognized the danger of bias inherent in the use of old data, that risk seemed preferable to relying on a much smaller sample with a limited geographical distribution. Second, we were unable to find measured-tree data from the Coast Ranges or, more impor tant, for trees under inches in diameter breast high. In the case of California red fir, all our sample trees were over 14 inches. This lack of small-tree data posed a particular problem in developing cubic-foot equations, since volumes were needed for all trees inches and larger. We were forced to extrapolate, using comparisons of existing tables as a guide to reasonable ness. Finally, our sample data for lodgepole pine and incenscedar were limited-26 trees of the former species and 46 of the latter-and confined to the southern Sierra Nevada. In spite of these scanty data, we decided to develop volume equations for both species, as an alternative preferable to using equations developed for some other Species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comprehensive Tree Volume Equations for Major Species of New Mexico and Arizona, Vol. 1: Results and Methodology Comprehensive tree volume equations and the methodology used to derive them are presented for the major tree species of New Mexico and Arizona. With these equations, the following gross and net volume types can be computed for both unforked and forked trees: total stem cubic foot volume; merchantable cubic foot volume to any top diameter between 3 and 8 inches, inside bark; International -inch board foot volume to a 6-inch top, inside bark; and Scribner board foot volume to a 6-inch top, inside bark. These equations were developed in such a manner as to eliminate many of the problems of consistency, compatibility, reliability, and flexibility associated with previous sets Of volume equations. This approach also allows the user to divide total stem cubic foot volume into top volume, merchantable volume, and stump volume. This last feature is useful for predicting the level of residues after harvesting to various top diameters.
