Book Synopsis Key Readings in Journalism by : Elliot King
Download or read book Key Readings in Journalism written by Elliot King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key Readings in Journalism brings together over thirty essential writings that every student of journalism should know. Designed as a primary text for undergraduate students, each reading was carefully chosen in response to extensive surveys from educators reflecting on the needs of today’s journalism classroom. Readings range from critical and historical studies of journalism, such as Walter Lippmann’s Public Opinion and Michael Schudson’s Discovering the News, to examples of classic reporting, such as Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward’s All the President’s Men. They are supplemented by additional readings to broaden the volume’s scope in every dimension, including gender, race, and nationality. The volume is arranged thematically to enable students to think deeply and broadly about journalism—its development, its practice, its key individuals and institutions, its social impact, and its future—and section introductions and headnotes precede each reading to provide context and key points for discussion.

Book excerpt: The updated and expanded third edition of How to Succeed in Commercial Real Estate is a comprehensive, practical guide for those considering entering the field of commercial real estate and those just beginning in the business, as well as for experienced brokers and sales managers who want to evaluate and strengthen their current strategies related to listings, negotiations, contracts, and sales. This book provides a straightforward overview of the business of selling and leasing commercial property, including coverage of the four main specialty areas--retail, office, industrial, and investment--as well as crossovers and emerging specialties. Rather than pumping a "get rich quick" approach to selling, the author shows brokers that they don't have to sacrifice integrity and ethics to remain competitive and deal oriented. The book includes detailed coverage of Choosing a company and a specialty. Sales strategies and sales points specific to commercial real estate, including practical suggestions for countering other brokers. The importance of focusing on exclusive listings, how to find and get the best prospects, and the most effective strategies for marketing property. Standard parts and points of negotiation for contracts and forms, including earnest money agreements, leases, options, listings, counter offers, and fee schedules. Rent and how it is calculated and quoted, including triple net, modified net, gross and full service leases. Technical knowledge including agency, law, appraisal, taxation, zoning, surveys, environmental investigations, investment analysis, risk comparison, exchanges, financing, and property management. The pros and cons of going independent and how to decide if it's the right move for you. Written in an engaging, straight-talk style, the author shares a wealth of other practical knowledge reaped from over forty years in the business.

Book Synopsis Readings from Reading by : Herbert Ekwe-Ekwe
Download or read book Readings from Reading written by Herbert Ekwe-Ekwe and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays here underscore Herbert Ekwe-Ekwe's continuing optimism about the possibilities of Africans constructing post-"Berlin-states" as the launch pad to transform the topography of the African renaissance. Readings from Reading is a timely publication, coming on the eve of the historic January 2011 referendum in south Sudan in which the people of the region will choose to vote to restore their national independence or get stuck hopelessly in the Sudan, the first of the "Berlin-states" that Africans tragically "inherited" in January 1956. Ekwe-Ekwe insists that the contemporary Africa state, imposed on Africans by a band of European conqueror states and currently run by what the author describes as a "shard of disreputable African regimes to exploit and despoil the continent's human and material resources," cannot serve African interests. The legacy, as this study demonstrates, has indeed been catastrophic: "The [African] overseers pushed the states into even deeper depths of genocidal and kakistocratic notoriety in the past 54 years as the grim examples of particularly Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Sudan ... depressingly underscore. 15 million Africans have been murdered by African-led regimes in these states and elsewhere in Africa since the Igbo genocide of 1977-1970." This is an engaging, incisive, wide-ranging and multidisciplinary discourse, salient features that have come to define Ekwe-Ekwe's groundbreaking scholarship of the past three decades. The author covers an assemblage of diverse topics and themes which include the Igbo genocide, the Jos massacres in central Nigeria, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab's failed attempt to blow up an incoming aircraft over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, African presence in Britain, Robert Mugabe, Muammar Gaddafi, Obafemi Awolowo, Omar al-Bashir, Charles Taylor, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ali Mazrui, Andrew Young, the G8 and Africa, Africa "debt," African emigres' remittances to Africa, "sub-Sahara Africa," reparations to Africans, African representation on the UN Security Council, African choices for the Nobel Peace Prize, Africa and the International Criminal Court, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, the Sudan and the Congo, arms to Africa, arms-ban on Africa. Finally, on the subject of the restoration-of-independence, the key connecting thread that links all the visitations, Ekwe-Ekwe critically examines the contributions made variously on this cord by an impressive line up of some of the very best and brightest of African intellectuals: Achebe, Adichie, Cesaire, Damas, Coltrane, Diop, Equiano, Ngugu, Okigbo, Senghor."
Book Synopsis Financial, Commercial, and Mortgage Mathematics and Their Applications by : Arun J. Prakash
Download or read book Financial, Commercial, and Mortgage Mathematics and Their Applications written by Arun J. Prakash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideal for college students in intermediate finance courses, this book uniquely applies mathematical formulas to teach the underpinnings of financial and lending decisions, covering common applications in real estate, capital budgeting, and commercial loans. An updated and expanded version of the time-honored classic text on financial math, this book provides, in one place, a complete and practical treatment of the four primary venues for finance: commercial lending, financial formulas, mortgage lending, and resource allocation or capital budgeting techniques. With an emphasis on understanding the principles involved rather than blind reliance on formulas, the book provides rigorous and thorough explanations of the mathematical calculations used in determining the time value of money, valuation of loans by commercial banks, valuation of mortgages, and the cost of capital and capital budgeting techniques for single as well as mutually exclusive projects. This new edition devotes an entire chapter to a method of evaluating mutually exclusive projects without resorting to any imposed conditions. Two chapters not found in the previous edition address special topics in finance, including a novel and innovative way to approach amortization tables and the time value of money for cash flows when they increase geometrically or arithmetically. This new edition also features helpful how-to sections on Excel applications at the end of each appropriate chapter.
