Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lachlan and Janet travel from Australia to live in a small village in beautiful Caithness, mainland Scotlands most northerly country. Lachlan has accepted a post as locum minister, unaware of the many adventures that await him and Janet. A parade of colorful characters crosses their path through the pages of the book. Lachlan describes his journeys from mainland Scotlands most northerly point to its most westerly town, down the Western Highlands, Inverness, Culloden, Ullapool, to the Summer Isles and Orkney. He conducts a memorial service among wild and lonely trackless hills at the site of the 1942 plane crash that killed the duke of Kent, the kings brother. Lachlan writes warmly of daily life among the delightful folk of his congregation and in villages in his parish while dealing with characters such as the dodgy Add-on John and auld Dugald, who wants his cat buried with him, while Lachlan himself manages to get himself into his usual predicaments. Here is Lachlan at his quirky best. If you love all things Scottish, youll love this book.

Lavrov boarded the Eifuku Maru in Kobe, Japan, how Mrs. Satrapinsky would turn out to be? She was the exception to the rule. After all, Mr. Satrapinsky was a bachelor in Tokyo. There was no record or any word mentioned about a wife. Buta good, happy family life and education at Saint Joseph College taught Victor to uphold his trust in humanity, and he carried this unexpected burden without any trepidation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that there is a correlation between language and culture or culture-specific ways of thinking can be traced back to the views of Herder and von Humboldt in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is generally accepted today that a language, especially its lexicon, influences its speakers' cultural patterns of thought and perception in various ways, for example through a culture-specific segmentation of the extralinguistic reality, the frequency of occurrence of particular lexical items, or the existence of keywords or key word combinations revealing core cultural values. The aim of this volume is to explore the cultural dimension of a wide range of preconstructed or semi-preconstructed word combinations in English. The 17 papers of the volume are divided into four sections, focusing on particular lexemes (e.g. enjoy and its collocates), types of word combinations (e.g. proverbs and similes), use-related varieties (such as the language of tourism or answering-machine messages), and user-related varieties (such as Aboriginal English or African English). The sections are preceded by a prologue, tracing the development of the study of formulaic language, and followed by an epilogue, which draws together the threads laid out in the various papers. The relation between language and culture in general has been explored in a number of important works over the past ten years. However, the study of the relation between English phraseology and culture in particular has been largely neglected. This volume is the first book-length publication devoted entirely to this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comic strips of Colin B. Morton and Chuck Death deliver an irreverent, heartfelt, and devastatingly funny history of rock and roll. Like Monty Python at its best, their version is surreal and ridiculous - yet somehow everything in it rings true. According to Morton and Death, the bass player in Led Zeppelin was Jean-Paul Sartre. And despite having been able to think up brilliant titles for their first three albums, Led Zeppelin were stuck for what to call the fourth one - so they put a load of prunes on the front. In strip after strip, Morton & Death pinpoint the absurdities and oddities of rock history. In the process, they often come closer to its truth than conventional accounts do, as well as being far more entertaining. As for the drawings, their caricatures of rock stars from Mick Jagger to Frank Zappa, Johnny Rotten to Courtney Love, are in themselves worth the price of admission.

Based on personal diaries, Behind The Rock is a humorous and honest account of life in the Australian rock'n'roll scene from its birth in 1956 to the mid-sixties (and Beyond). With the changing fortunes of the band, the R'Jays, the authors take us behind-the-scenes of Festival Records, 'live' television, stadium concerts and dances, band tours in Australia, New Zealand and war-torn Vietnam and the world of adolescent sex, fans and 'band vultures', bungling managers, and hard-living and heart-broken rock stars. A no-holds-barred, eyewitness story, Behind The Rock is a vital document for understanding the history of 'Oz Rock'.

Book excerpt: Set in wintry Tasmania in the early 1990s, with flashbacks to post-war Hobart and Europe during World War II, this story deals with dark secrets, crime and Nazi plots, interwoven with familiar domestic tensions of family life and marriage. Tully creates a fictional world strongly embedded in authentic details of real locations and well-conceived characters. The earthy, passionate main protagonist, Jack Martin, is richly drawn: 'A typical copper - detective anyway - stressed out most of the time, running on adrenaline, nicotine and coffee. Booze too, but not as much as some of his mates. Running to flab from a diet of meat pipes and sauce, chips and the deep-fried dog's turds they called chicken rolls, gobbled down on the run between cases, ingesting cumulatively lethal doses of salt, sugar and saturated fats.' In this elaborate web of intrigue the ground shifts, the past intrudes and time and place are vividly realised. Brooding violence, tangled mysteries... a gripping read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An invaluable resource for social workers in all practice settings, not just mental health, and a core text for social work students.' - Dr Valerie Gerrand, former AASW representative and board member of the Mental Health Council of Australia 'An outstanding and very original contribution to the scholarship on mental health policy, research and service.' - Associate Professor Maria Harries AM, University of Western Australia Developing the skills to work effectively with people who have mental health problems is fundamental to contemporary social work practice. Practitioners face new challenges in a rapidly changing work environment including working with consumers and their families and in multidisciplinary teams. Now, more than ever, social workers need discipline-specific mental health knowledge and training. This second edition of Social Work Practice in Mental Health continues the guiding principles of the first edition - an emphasis on the centrality of the lived experience of mental illness and the importance of embracing both scientific and relational dimensions of practice. The new edition reflects the latest developments in best practice including the emergence of recovery theory and the importance of evidence-based approaches. This is a comprehensive guide to social work practice in specialist mental health settings as well as in other fields of practice, covering the most commonly encountered mental health problems. It features information on assessment, case management, family work and community work, and reveals how the core concerns of social work - human rights, self-determination and relationships with family and the wider community - are also central to mental health practice.
