Book excerpt: Wireless Sensor Networks came into prominence around the start of this millennium motivated by the omnipresent scenario of small-sized sensors with limited power deployed in large numbers over an area to monitor different phenomenon. The sole motivation of a large portion of research efforts has been to maximize the lifetime of the network, where network lifetime is typically measured from the instant of deployment to the point when one of the nodes has expended its limited power source and becomes in-operational - commonly referred as first node failure. Over the years, research has increasingly adopted ideas from wireless communications as well as embedded systems development in order to move this technology closer to realistic deployment scenarios. In such a rich research area as wireless sensor networks, it is difficult if not impossible to provide a comprehensive coverage of all relevant aspects. In this book, we hope to give the reader with a snapshot of some aspects of wireless sensor networks research that provides both a high level overview as well as detailed discussion on specific areas.

Book excerpt: The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements.Technical topics discussed in the book include:Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman FilterRSS-AoA-based via Sensor NavigationThis book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.

They have been deployed for several tasks, such as monitoring volcanoes, monitoring buildings and infrastructures, detecting enemy instrution in military, etc... Sensor location plays an important role in network quality. It has impact on different aspects, i.e., network connectivity, network coverage to name a few. However, exact sensor locations are rarely achieved. In the one hand, sensors may be misplaced during operations. On the other hand, sensor locations are kept uncertain due to privacy concerns. This raises the need for investigating sensor networks with the presence of sensor location uncertainty. This dissertation provides an analysis on sensor networks with the presence of uncertainty. First, we investigate network coverage and target localization and tracking using binary proximity sensors under sensor location uncertainty. A deterministic, polynomial-time algorithm is devised to compute the minimum sensing range for guaranteed coverage. Furthermore, algorithms are proposed for target localization and measurement model for target tracking in sensor networks. The approaches are based on the high order maximum Voronoi diagram of disks in the plane. Next, we study privacy in spatial queries. In contrast to sensor location uncertainty, uncertainty is introduced to spatial queries to protect user information. Essentially, the querying user is grouped with other users to form a cloak for which spatial queries are made, instead of a single query location. In this disseration, a framework for user identity privacy in $k$-nearest queries is proposed, in which we devise a $k$-anonymous, locality-preserving cloaking algorithm. Cloaks are also used in spatial skyline queries, which leads to different domination relationships. The disseration proposes geometric algorithms for spatial skyline queries with user location uncertainty. In addition, the fuzzy domination relationship in spatial skyline queries is investigated. Our work opens up new directions in spatial skyline queries with uncertainty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, advances in signal processing have led to small, low power, inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The signal processing in WSN is different from the traditional wireless networks in two critical aspects: firstly, the signal processing in WSN is performed in a fully distributed manner, unlike in traditional wireless networks; secondly, due to the limited computation capabilities of sensor networks, it is essential to develop an energy and bandwidth efficient signal processing algorithms. Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localisation techniques are at the forefront of tracking research applications. Since tracking algorithms have been attracting research and development attention recently, prolific literature and a wide range of proposed approaches regarding the topic have emerged. This thesis is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based localisation and tracking approaches. This thesis includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The presented work achieves low localisation error in complex environments by predicting the environmental characteristics among beacon nodes. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The proposed approach offers reasonable localisation accuracy while requiring a short period of offline computation time. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. Despite the interest in target tracking and localisation issues, there are few systems deployed using ZigBee network standard, and no tracking system has used the full features of the ZigBee network standard. Tracking through the ZigBee is a challenging task when the density of router and end-device nodes is low, due to the limited communication capabilities of end-device nodes. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. To save energy, different strategies were adopted. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications. This study consists of two main approaches: a data aggregation approach, proposed and implemented in order to reduce the total number of messages transmitted over the network; and a prediction approach, deployed to increase the lifetime of the WSN. For evaluation purposes, two environmental models were used in this thesis: firstly, real experiments, in which the proposed approaches were implemented on real sensor nodes, to test the validity for the proposed approaches; secondly, simulation experiments, in which NS-2 was used to evaluate the power-consumption issues of the two approaches proposed in this thesis.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Wireless sensor networks has been rapidly growing over the past few decades. It has its significance in many fields (e.g., recording temperature in an area, data collecting, health care monitoring etc.). One such application is tracking a target with the use of sensor networks. The problem arises when the mobile target is not following the path that is predicted. In this paper, we consider the problem of both navigation and tracking of a mobile target using Ad-Hoc On-demand Distance Vector Protocol (AODV). For this model, we propose a new approach called extended min max approximation to detect the position of the target and navigation simultaneously. In addition to it, we use semi definite programming relaxation which helps in solving this problem effectively. We here use AODV routing protocol instead of Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and a cubic function is used to navigate the mobile sensors effectively.

Book excerpt: Efficient sensor deployment strategies are developed in this work for target monitoring and coverage improvement in collaborative wireless mobile sensor networks. The objective of the target monitoring problem is to compute the desired sensing and communication radii of sensors as well as their location at every time instant such that a set of prescribed specifications such as connectivity preservation and low energy consumption are satisfied. An energy-efficient strategy is also proposed for tracking a moving target in a sensing field, using a grid of sufficiently small rectangular cells. The grid is converted to a graph with properly weighted edges. A shortest-path algorithm is subsequently used to route information from target to destination by a subset of sensors. In the problem of coverage improvement in mobile sensor networks, on the other hand, the objective is to place each sensor in the field using available local information about its neighbors in such a way that the area covered by sensors is as large as possible, while some important criteria are taken into consideration. Both cases of identical and nonidentical sensors (in terms of sensing radii) are considered, and different iterative algorithms are developed which are shown to be convergent. The relocation algorithms are based on the relative position of each sensor w.r.t. the boundaries of its cell or the corresponding corner point. The algorithms are extended to the case of limited communication range of sensors (leading to inaccurate Voronoi cells), an environment with prioritized sensing (mathematically characterized by a weighting function for different points), and an environment with obstacles (leading to some invisible areas). Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

It builds on the success of the past editions, held in Enschede, The Netherlands in 2006, and in Kendal, UK in 2007. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to EuroSSC 2008, in Zurich, Switerland. This volume contains the invited papers and technical peer-reviewed papers selected for presentation at the conference. At EuroSSC we aim to explore technologies, algorithms, architectures, p- tocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings, coop- ating intelligent objects, and their applications. Since its inception, EuroSSC has taken a complementary technology-driven and user-driven view to discuss these aspects. It is one of the particularities of EuroSSC, and the 2008 edition made no exception. In addition we emphasized aspects related to quality of c- text and context-aware feedback by actuator systems. This re?ects the growing importance that context processing in uncertain environments and sensor and actuator networks take in ambient intelligence environments. We received 70 paper submissions. They originate from 30 countries of - rope, the Middle East and Africa (66%), Asia (22%), North America (9%), and South America (3%). These numbers re?ect the European origins of EuroSSC, but also show that EuroSSC is a recognized and attractive platform for parti- pants from all regions of the world.
