Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If Ms. Frizzle were a physics student of Stephen Hawking, she might have written THE UNIVERSE IN YOUR HAND, a wild tour through the reaches of time and space, from the interior of a proton to the Big Bang to the rough suburbs of a black hole. It's friendly, excitable, erudite, and cosmic." —Jordan Ellenberg, New York Times besteselling author of How Not To Be Wrong Quantum physics, black holes, string theory, the Big Bang, dark matter, dark energy, parallel universes: even if we are interested in these fundamental concepts of our world, their language is the language of math. Which means that despite our best intentions of finally grasping, say, Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, most of us are quickly brought up short by a snarl of nasty equations or an incomprehensible graph. Christophe Galfard's mission in life is to spread modern scientific ideas to the general public in entertaining ways. Using his considerable skills as a brilliant theoretical physicist and successful young adult author, The Universe in Your Hand employs the immediacy of simple, direct language to show us, not explain to us, the theories that underpin everything we know about our universe. To understand what happens to a dying star, we are asked to picture ourselves floating in space in front of it. To get acquainted with the quantum world, we are shrunk to the size of an atom and then taken on a journey. Employing everyday similes and metaphors, addressing the reader directly, and writing stories rather than equations renders these astoundingly complex ideas in an immediate and visceral way. Utterly captivating and entirely unique, The Universe in Your Hand will find its place among other classics in the field.

This book was released on 2004-08-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a brilliant flash about fourteen billion years ago, time and matter were born in a single instant of creation. An immensely hot and dense universe began its rapid expansion everywhere, creating space where there was no space and time where there was no time. In the intense fire just after the beginning, the lightest elements were forged, later to form primordial clouds that eventually evolved into galaxies, stars, and planets. This evolution is the story told in this fascinating book. Interwoven with the storyline are short pieces on the pioneering men and women who revealed those wonders to us./a

Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not). The discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure. -Engagingly written -Easily understandable by both the general reader and the seasoned physicist -Covers a diversity of subjects from "hot" topics in contemporary physics to less widely known but subtle and intriguing issues in physics -Discusses real physical systems whose behavior provokes, surprises and challenges the imagination -This second edition is newly revised and updated
Book Synopsis When the Atoms Failed and Dragons of Space by : John W. Campbell, Jr.
Download or read book When the Atoms Failed and Dragons of Space written by John W. Campbell, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels with original illustrations. One of the true grandmasters of sci-fi wrote the first novel, "When the Atoms Failed." John W. Campbell, Jr. was only about twenty years old when he wrote both "When the Atoms Failed" and its immediate follow-up, "The Metal Horde." These tales appeared in the January and April issues of Amazing Stories all the way back in 1930. Campbell was attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the time, and his knowledge and love of science is very apparent in both of these stories, which are rousing good space opera tales about invasions from outer space by seemingly unstoppable alien hordes. Since they are so closely linked, we present both of these works together as essentially one work, broken into two parts with chapter breaks throughout. The second novel is veteran sci-fi author Aladra Septama's "Dragons of Space." It all started so quietly--an incident here, an incident there: two men riding on horseback vanished in the middle of the night--no trace could be found; an aerocar with nine people aboard disappeared, literally, into thin air; even more remarkable, the bathers of an entire swimming pool seemingly vanished from the waters in which they swam. Then the incidents spread to livestock and other animals. Before long fantastic creatures of an ethereal nature began to appear in the skies, floating menacingly above Earth. No one knew what they were or where they came from, but one thing was clear: they had come to annihilate the life forms of not only Earth, but all the planets of the Solar System. With a grim task in front of them, the greatest brains of the civilized planets gathered in desperation. Their goal: to prevent their worlds from becoming a feeding ground for an unearthly menace from beyond the void...

Book Synopsis A Journey into Reciprocal Space by : A.M. Glazer
Download or read book A Journey into Reciprocal Space written by A.M. Glazer and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of reciprocal space is over 100 years old, and has been of particular use by crystallographers in order to understand the patterns of spots when x-rays are diffracted by crystals. However, it has a much more general use, especially in the physics of the solid state. In order to understand what it is, how to construct it and how to make use of it, it is first necessary to start with the so-called real or direct space and then show how reciprocal space is related to it. Real space describes the objects we see around us, especially with regards to crystals, their physical shapes and symmetries and the arrangements of atoms within: the so-called crystal structure. Reciprocal space on the other hand deals with the crystals as seen through their diffraction images. Indeed, crystallographers are accustomed to working backwards from the diffraction images to the crystal structures, which we call crystal structure solution. In solid state physics, one usually works the other way, starting with reciprocal space to explain various solid-state properties, such as thermal and electrical phenomena. In this book, I start with the crystallographer's point of view of real and reciprocal space and then proceed to develop this in a form suitable for physics applications. Note that while for the crystallographer reciprocal space is a handy means of dealing with diffraction, for the solid-state physicist it is thought of as a way to describe the formation and motion of waves, in which case the physicist thinks of reciprocal space in terms of momentum or wave-vector k-space. This is because, for periodic structures, a characteristic of normal crystals, elementary quantum excitations, e.g. phonons and electrons, can be described both as particles and waves. The treatment given here, will be by necessity brief, but I would hope that this will suffice to lead the reader to build upon the concepts described. I have tried to write this book in a suitable form for both undergraduate and graduate students of what today we call "condensed matter physics."
Book Synopsis Atom (Icon Science) by : Piers Bizony
Download or read book Atom (Icon Science) written by Piers Bizony and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riddled with jealousy, rivalry, missed opportunities and moments of genius, the history of the atom's discovery is as bizarre, as capricious, and as weird as the atom itself. John Dalton gave us the first picture of the atom in the early 1800s. Almost 100 years later the young misfit New Zealander, Ernest Rutherford, showed the atom consisted mostly of space, and in doing so overturned centuries of classical science. It was a brilliant Dane, Neils Bohr, who made the next great leap - into the incredible world of quantum theory. Yet, he and a handful of other revolutionary young scientists weren't prepared for the shocks Nature had up her sleeve. This 'insightful, compelling' book ( New Scientist) reveals the mind-bending discoveries that were destined to upset everything we thought we knew about reality and unleash a dangerous new force upon the world. Even today, as we peer deeper and deeper into the atom, it throws back as many questions at us as answers.
Book Synopsis Probable Impossibilities by : Alan Lightman
Download or read book Probable Impossibilities written by Alan Lightman and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Einstein’s Dreams tackles "big questions like the origin of the universe and the nature of consciousness ... in an entertaining and easily digestible way” (Wall Street Journal) with a collection of meditative essays on the possibilities—and impossibilities—of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, whom The Washington Post has called “the poet laureate of science writers,” explores these questions and more—from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang. Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.
Book Synopsis A Journey from Dust to Consciousness by : Vincent J. Hyde
Download or read book A Journey from Dust to Consciousness written by Vincent J. Hyde and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The billions of galaxies with stars, planets, and moons are all made of the same substance: dust from the universe. Unlike other lifeforms on Earth, humans possess consciousnessand weve created fields of knowledge that are stored in libraries, on the internet, and elsewhere. Even now, there are some humans that are creating new fields of knowledge, and when they die, theyll be remembered. They will no doubt influence new thinkers that add to and expand upon their knowledge. But our fields of knowledge seem to be driving us to use enormous amounts of energy, and we need to consider alternatives, such as a worldwide power network based on solar and wind power. This book examines those ideas and many others, and while its author believes in a Creator, he thinks its up to individuals to decide whether to pray or not to pray. The overall message is that we must work as hard as we can in our chosen fields to become a star and shape the future for those that come after us as we continue A Journey from Dust to Consciousness.

Read a special & unique book (Cosmocellular-Hypothesis). No one would have ever read it before. This same Cosmocellular-Message you had read before 30 billion years, and will also read after 30 billion years,.....How it's possible according to universal Ancient-Vedic-Law of the Time-Replication & Thermodynamics-Laws of the Modern-Science (Waves-physics)? Indeed, all kind of the plant-kingdoms & animal-kingdoms on the earth, had reproduced , are reproducing & will reproduce from their same species only. Thus, our ancestors were not apes, but they were same as we look today. ..... How according to such joint-theory of cosmocellular-ancestory (and waves- &-particles-physics) as well as cytocosmic-ancestory, ---- can trace back us to Vedic-belief or philosophical-belief (which strongly prevailed before Charles Darwin) about the evolution of life on the earth that each living-species evolved separately & that none had changed their forms? That means, how a man evolved from a man only ,not from the ape or other species. In other words, man has descended from man only , & rat from rat only; similarly a banyan tree from banyan-tree only, & mango-tree from mango-tree only etc.etc. ? In short, a babool or banyan tree never never gives mango-fruit.... ******************************************************************************************************************************************* For USA: Eco-Friendly Special Discount Rate of E-Books : Vol-1-A , $33, + Vol-1-B, $35 + Vol-1-C, $35 = Total $ 103 : VERSUS e-book COMBO (Vol-1- A / B / C) = $ 61. Book Synopsis A Short Journey from Quarks to the Universe by : Eleftherios N. Economou
Download or read book A Short Journey from Quarks to the Universe written by Eleftherios N. Economou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader for a short journey over the structures of matter showing that their main properties can be obtained even at a quantitative level with a minimum background knowledge. The latter, besides some high school physics and mathematics, consists of the three cornerstones of science presented in chapters 1 to 3, namely the atomic idea, the wave-particle duality, and the minimization of energy as the condition for equilibrium. Dimensional analysis employing the universal constants and combined with “a little imagination and thinking”, to quote Feynman, allows an amazing short-cut derivation of several quantitative results concerning the structures of matter. This book is expected to be of interest to physics, engineering, and other science students and to researchers in physics, material science, chemistry, and engineering who may find stimulating the alternative derivation of several real world results, which sometimes seem to pop out the magician’s hat.
