Book excerpt: My manuscript is a historical fiction novel. The story line follows a young Minnesota farm boy into the army after the outbreak of the war. It follows him through basic training, jump school, and then on into the war. The book covers the Normandy Invasionthe battle known as The Bridgeto far up into Holland and finally, the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout the book, I take the reader back to Minnesota so they may see how war affects family and friends on the home front. All the characters are fictional. However, all the military bases in the US and Europe are factual. Each battle my characters are involved in are accurate by timeline and locations. Anyone who is a student of the war or readers who love this genre should appreciate those facts. However, as the novel is a fictional work, I have taken literary license to add drama and hold-your-breath scenes throughout the story.

Book excerpt: ** Now available for pre-order (title will be released on April 29th) **As a little girl of nine, Katherine Langrish fell deeply in love with The Chronicles of Narnia - she was even inspired to write a book of stories set in that world, complete with poster-paint picture of Aslan on the homemade dust jacket. Although she loved the Narnia books to bursting, others took their place as she grew up. For years they sat unopened on her shelves. She began to wonder why. Had they simply become too familiar? Had the charm faded? What might they mean to her as an adult? From Spare Oom to War Drobe is a love letter to that early passion, as well as a reappraisal of The Chronicles of Narnia in the light of maturity and changing tastes. It brilliantly evokes her initial sense of childish wonder, and in a close reading of the novels, including analysis of the context in which other critics have placed them, she gives us a superbly rich, enlightening, and immensely readable guide to the world of these evergreen stories.
Download or read book War Gardens written by Lalage Snow and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey through the most unlikely of gardens: the oases of peace people create in the midst of war. In this millennium, we have become war weary. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Ukraine to South Sudan and Syria, from Kashmir to the West Bank, conflict is as contagious and poisonous as Japanese knotweed. Living through it are people just like us with ordinary jobs, ordinary pressures and ordinary lives. Against a new landscape of horror and violence it is up to them to maintain a modicum of normality and colour. For some, gardening is the way to achieve this. Working in the world's most dangerous war zones, freelance war correspondent and photographer Lally Snow has often chanced across a very moving sight, a testimony to the triumph of the human spirit in adversity, a celebration of hope and beauty: a war garden. In Kabul, the royal gardens are tended by a centenarian gardener, though the king is long gone; in Camp Bastion, bored soldiers improvise tiny gardens to give themselves a moment's peace; on both sides of the dividing line in Jerusalem families tend groves of olives and raise beautiful plants from the unforgiving, disputed landscape; in Ukraine, families tend their gardens in the middle of a surreal, frozen war. War Gardens is a surprising, tragic and beautiful journey through the darkest places of the modern world, revealing the ways people make time and space for themselves and for nature even in the middle of destruction.

Book excerpt: Fear gripped their souls as the roaring waves of the angry sea relentlessly pounded their ship. Carsten Schuck, clinging to his wife and children, prayed that they would live to see the beautiful new America. Surely God did not bring them this far to drown in the belly of the boat. Thousands of his countrymen had made this journey before him. America was calling him with a chance for freedom, opportunity, territory to explore, and a new beginning for his children with a future full of promise. 'We must survive! God, please keep us safe!' he cried. Little did Carsten know that fleeing to America was just the beginning of the many hardships, heartaches, harsh realities, and tender, rewarding moments that his family would face as they reestablished themselves in a new land. He and his descendants would help forge the way and be a part of creating the greatest country in the world. Based on the true story of coauthor Robert L. Shook's ancestors, A Journey in Courage captures the incredible legacy of the Schuck family, a family connected by their faith in God and their deep love for their country and one another. This fascinating account will treat you to a remarkable three-dimensional trip through time and leave a lasting impression on your heart.
