Its boundary-blurring fusion of modernist experimentation, visual and concrete poetry, and environmental photography anticipated many of the preoccupations of contemporary designers, artists, and cultural commentators." Book Synopsis Design, History and Time by : Zoë Hendon
Download or read book Design, History and Time written by Zoë Hendon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design, History and Time reflects on the nature of time in relation to design, in both past and contemporary contexts. In contrast to a traditional design historical approach which emphasises schools and movements, this volume addresses time as a continuum and considers the importance of temporality for design practice and history. Contributors address how designers, design historians and design thinkers might respond to the global challenges of time, the rhythms of work, and the increasing speed of life and communication between different communities. They consider how the past informs the present and the future in terms of design; the importance of time-based design practices such as rapid prototyping and slow design, time in relation to memory and forgetting, and artefacts such as the archive for which time is key, and ponder the design of time itself. Showcasing the work of fifteen design scholars from a range of international contexts, the book provides an essential text for thinking about changing attitudes to the temporal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean by the term "animation" when we are discussing film? Is it a technique? A style? A way of seeing or experiencing "a world" that has little relation to our own lived experience of "the world"? In Animated Worlds, contributors reveal the astonishing variety of "worlds" animation confronts us with. Essays range from close film analyses to phenomenological and cognitive approaches, spectatorship, performance, literary theory, and digital aesthetics. Book Synopsis The Socio-spatial Design of Community and Governance by : Sam Jacoby
Download or read book The Socio-spatial Design of Community and Governance written by Sam Jacoby and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new interdisciplinary understanding of urban design in China based on a study of the transformative effects of socio-spatial design and planning on communities and their governance. This is framed by an examination of the social projects, spaces, and realities that have shaped three contexts critical to the understanding of urban design problems in China: the histories of “collective forms” and “collective spaces”, such as that of the urban danwei (work-unit), which inform current community building and planning; socio-spatial changes in urban and rural development; and disparate practices of “spatialised governmentality”. These contexts and an attendant transformation from planning to design and from government to governance, define the current urban design challenges found in the dominant urban xiaoqu (small district) and shequ (community) development model. Examining the histories, transformations, and practices that have shaped socio-spatial epistemologies and experiences in China – including a specific sense of community and place that is rather based on a concrete “collective” than abstract “public” space and underpinned by socialised governance – this book brings together a diverse range of observations, thoughts, analyses, and projects by urban researchers and practitioners. Thereby discussing emerging interdisciplinary urban design practices in China, this book offers a valuable resource for all academics, practitioners, and stakeholders with an interest in socio-spatial design and development.

Book Synopsis Inclusive Design by : P.John Clarkson
Download or read book Inclusive Design written by P.John Clarkson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive Design: What's in It for Me? presents a comprehensive review of current practice in inclusive design. With emphasis on new ideas for improvement and arguments for wider implementation in future, a unique combination of leading opinions on inclusive design from both industry and academia are offered. The theme throughout encourages a positive view of inclusive design as a good and profitable process and to produce a change to more effective approaches to "design for all". Inclusive Design is composed of two parts with a common chapter structure so that the business and design arguments in favour of inclusive design can be easily compared and assimilated: The Business Case presents the industrial and management benefits of inclusive design. It concentrates on demographic, legal and ethical reasons for all businesses being better off taking inclusivity into account in the design of their products or services. Case histories demonstrating the commercial success of inclusive design are drawn from the experiences of companies such as Tesco, Fiat and The Royal Mail. The Designers' Case focuses on the factors a designer needs to take into account when dealing with inclusivity. "Who is going to use my design?" "What do they need from my design?" "How do I take any medical needs into account?" "Just how "inclusive" is my design?" are all questions answered in this section which presents the necessary tools for effective inclusive design. This part of the book aims to convince a designer that inclusive design is a realistic goal. Inclusive Design will appeal to designers, researchers and students and to managers making decisions about the research and design strategies of their companies.
Book Synopsis Designing Objects in Motion by : Kensho Miyoshi
Download or read book Designing Objects in Motion written by Kensho Miyoshi and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement of designed objects is not just something purely functional but also triggers a wide range of sensations. A curtain swaying gently in the wind can cause the onlooker to feel easy and relaxed, as if it was he or she who is floating in the air. This imagined projection caused by the perception of moving objects is called "kinesthetic empathy". In this study, which followed on from a dissertation at the School of Design Research in London, the author investigates the esthetics of movement by documenting his own design-based learning and research process in terms of "research through design", using the experimental cooperation with puppet players as an example. He thereby creates a framework that allows designers to observe the esthetics of objects in motion as a trigger of feelings.
