Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend had lived for more than a century, yet, in spite of eye witnesses who had seen her ghost, no one wanted to believe the validity of The Blue Lady. Why was she haunting Brindle Point? What was she trying to say? After one dockside farewell too many, Josiah Abbotts need for hearth and home suddenly outweigh his taste for salt air and billowing sails. When he is offered the commission of lighthouse keeper at a Virginia lighthouse station; he jumps at the chance and hangs up his captains hat for good. His family is more than willing to follow him to the new lighthouse, but will the ghost of Brindle Point welcome them? Can obstacles like: unannounced inspections, coastal storms and ghostly apparitions surmount their faith, or, will they ingratiate the Abbotts into a deeper love for the life? As the passing crew of a line packet ship becomes distracted by a murder on board, they face disaster. Josiahs daughter must put her faith into actions when one of the injured crew members falls in love with her. When the mending crew is brought before a board of inquiry, previous encounters with this ghost can no longer be kept secret. Only, after the Abbotts decipher messages revealed by the ghost, can they discover truth, the true meaning of love and a true jewel for the keeping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote, rugged, and spectacularly majestic, with stunning alpine meadows and jagged peaks that soar beyond ten thousand feet, North Cascades National Park is one of the Pacific Northwest’s crown jewels. Now, in the first full-length account, Lauren Danner chronicles its creation--just in time for the park’s fiftieth anniversary in 2018. The North Cascades range benefited from geographic isolation that shielded its mountains from extensive resource extraction and development. Efforts to establish a park began as early as 1892, but gained traction after World War II as economic affluence sparked national interest in wilderness preservation and growing concerns about the impact of harvesting timber to meet escalating postwar housing demands. As the environmental movement matured, a 1950s Glacier Peak study mobilized conservationists to seek establishment of a national park that prioritized wilderness. Concerned about the National Park Service’s policy favoring development for tourism and the United States Forest Service’s policy promoting logging in the national forests, conservationists leveraged a changing political environment and the evolving environmental values of the natural resource agencies to achieve the goal of permanent wilderness protection. Their grassroots activism became increasingly sophisticated, eventually leading to the compromise that resulted in the 1968 creation of Washington’s magnificent third national park.

Book excerpt: From the disappearance of the Beaumont children to the abduction of William Tyrrell to the double murder of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter Khandalyce, Xanthé is determined to expose the truth to maximise dignity for both deceased victims and those left behind. Xanthé talks to experts to uncover the how's and why's of tragic murders and haunting disappearances. Along the way readers will also be introduced to new forensic techniques and scientific methods that could - or did - help move the case forward. Cold Case Investigations covers mostly murders or suspected murders - such as Ashley Coulston, Mr Cruel and Ivan Milat - with the victims as the focus. Not only because, criminologically speaking, the more you can learn about your victim the more you can extrapolate about the person who killed or abducted them, but also because they deserve their stories to be told. They deserve for people to know their names. They shouldn't just be someone's victim.

Book excerpt: “This delightful book” for young readers “is full of creative activities, interspersed with plenty of fascinating historical facts” (School Library Journal). On this here ship, we follow the pirate's code: No frolikin' in the bilges, no songs about scurvy, and most important, each buccaneer must keep his pistol ready for action at all times. Break the code, me bucko, and you'll be forced to walk the plank. In The Big Book of Pirate Stuff, Captain Michael MacLeod and Jamaica Rose teach the fine art of pirateering, from plundering, pillaging, and gambling to digging for buried treasure. A dabble of history, a smatterin' of activities, and a healthy dose of derring-do make this book a must-read for aspiring pirates.
