Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In various branches of fluid mechanics, our understanding is inhibited by the presence of turbulence. Although many experimental and theoretical studies have significantly helped to increase our physical understanding, a comp- hensive and predictive theory of turbulent flows has not yet been established. Therefore, the prediction of turbulent flow relies heavily on simulation stra- gies. The development of reliable methods for turbulent flow computation will have a significant impact on a variety of technological advancements. These range from aircraft and car design, to turbomachinery, combustors, and process engineering. Moreover, simulation approaches are important in materials - sign, prediction of biologically relevant flows, and also significantly contribute to the understanding of environmental processes including weather and climate forecasting. The material that is compiled in this book presents a coherent account of contemporary computational approaches for turbulent flows. It aims to p- vide the reader with information about the current state of the art as well as to stimulate directions for future research and development. The book puts part- ular emphasis on computational methods for incompressible and compressible turbulent flows as well as on methods for analysing and quantifying nume- cal errors in turbulent flow computations. In addition, it presents turbulence modelling approaches in the context of large eddy simulation, and unfolds the challenges in the field of simulations for multiphase flows and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of engineering flows in complex geometries. Apart from reviewing main research developments, new material is also included in many of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics research, especially for aeronautics, continues to be a rewarding and industrially relevant field of applied science in which to work. An enthusiastic international community of expert CFD workers continue to push forward the frontiers of knowledge in increasing number. Applications of CFD technology in many other sectors of industry are being successfully tackled. The aerospace industry has made significant investments and enjoys considerable benefits from the application of CFD to its products for the last two decades. This era began with the pioneering work ofMurman and others that took us into the transonic (potential flow) regime for the first time in the early 1970's. We have also seen momentous developments of the digital computer in this period into vector and parallel supercomputing. Very significant advances in all aspects of the methodology have been made to the point where we are on the threshold of calculating solutions for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for complete aircraft configurations. However, significant problems and challenges remain in the areas of physical modelling, numerics and computing technology. The long term industrial requirements are captured in the U. S. Governments 'Grand Challenge' for 'Aerospace Vehicle Design' for the 1990's: 'Massively parallel computing systems and advanced parallel software technology and algorithms will enable the development and validation of multidisciplinary, coupled methods. These methods will allow the numerical simulation and design optimisation of complete aerospace vehicle systems throughout the flight envelope'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the potential of the blended wing body (BWB) concept for significant improvement in both fuel efficiency and noise reduction and addresses the considerable challenges raised for control engineers because of characteristics like open-loop instability, large flexible structure, and slow control surfaces. This text describes state-of-the-art and novel modeling and control design approaches for the BWB aircraft under consideration. The expert contributors demonstrate how exceptional robust control performance can be achieved despite such stringent design constraints as guaranteed handling qualities, reduced vibration, and the minimization of the aircraft’s structural loads during maneuvers and caused by turbulence. As a result, this innovative approach allows the building of even lighter aircraft structures, and thus results in considerable efficiency improvements per passenger kilometer. The treatment of this large, complex, parameter-dependent industrial control problem highlights relevant design issues and provides a relevant case study for modeling and control engineers in many adjacent disciplines and applications. Modeling and Control for a Blended Wing Body Aircraft presents research results in numeric modeling and control design for a large, flexible, civil BWB aircraft in the pre-design stage as developed within the EU FP7 research project ACFA 2020. It is a useful resource for aerospace and control engineers as it shows the complete BWB aircraft modeling and control design process, carried out with the most recent tools and techniques available. presents research results in numeric modeling and control design for a large, flexible, civil BWB aircraft in the pre-design stage as developed within the EU FP7 research project ACFA 2020. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft design processes require extensive work in the area of both aerodynamics and structure, fonning an environment for aeroelasticity investigations. Present and future designs of European aircraft are characterized by an ever increasing aircraft size and perfonnance. Strong weight saving requirements are met by introduction of new materials, leading to more flexible structure of the aircraft. Consequently, aeroelastic phenomena such as vortex-induced aeroelastic oscillations and moving shock waves can be predominant and may have a significant effect on the aircraft perfonnance. Hence, the ability to estimate reliable margins for aeroelastic instabilities (flutter) or dynamic loads (buffeting) is a major concern to the aircraft designer. As modern aircrafts have wing bending modes with frequencies that are low enough to influence the flight control system, demands on unsteady aerodynamics and structural analysis to predict flight control effectiveness and riding comfort for passengers are extremely high. Therefore, the aircraft industries need an improved capacity of robust, accurate and reliable prediction methods in the coupled aeroelastic, flight mechanics and loads disciplines. In particular, it is necessary to develop/improve and calibrate the numerical tools in order to predict with high level of accuracy and capability complex and non-classical aeroelastic phenomena, including aerodynamic non-linearities, such as shock waves and separation, as well as structural non-linearities, e. g. control surface free-play. Nowadays, robust methods for structural analysis and linearised unsteady aerodynamics are coupled and used by the aircraft industry to computationally clear a new design from flutter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributed presentations were given by over 50 researchers representing the state of parallel CFD art and architecture from Asia, Europe, and North America. Major developments at the 1999 meeting were: (1) the effective use of as many as 2048 processors in implicit computations in CFD, (2) the acceptance that parallelism is now the 'easy part' of large-scale CFD compared to the difficulty of getting good per-node performance on the latest fast-clocked commodity processors with cache-based memory systems, (3) favorable prospects for Lattice-Boltzmann computations in CFD (especially for problems that Eulerian and even Lagrangian techniques do not handle well, such as two-phase flows and flows with exceedingly multiple-connected demains with a lot of holes in them, but even for conventional flows already handled well with the continuum-based approaches of PDEs), and (4) the nascent integration of optimization and very large-scale CFD. Further details of Parallel CFD'99, as well as other conferences in this series, are available at http://www.parcfd.org
