With it in his hand he read, first the Odyssey, then the Iliad. Tried by this test, it seemed to com bine so many excellences that the wish arose in his mind that the work might be made generally accessible to students in America and in England. From the time when he decided to undertake the translation to the present date he has been in frequent corre spondence with the author, calling his attention to articles which seemed obscure, and receiving from him the corrections and changes which have been incorporated into the second German edition. The number of additions made by the editor himself is considerable, and many articles have been entirely rewritten, as a comparison of the present with the German edition will show. A certain baldness and inadequateness in the treatment of many words must, indeed, be a characteristic of such a dictionary. The test of the book, however, is its practi cal adaptation to the ends it is intended to serve. The writer's own experience has led him to believe that it is well adapted to meet the wants of the young student, as well as to be a com panion in the reading of those professional men who have nu willingly let their acquaintance with Homer drop because of the inconvenience of carrying with them on a journey or to the sea shore a cumbrous lexicon. As both an English-Homeric dictionary and a concordance, the Lexicon lists and defines in English all instances of Greek words that appear in the two epics. Now, with the inclusion of Cunliffe’s “Homeric Proper and Place Names”—a forty-two-page supplement to the Lexicon—this expanded edition will be even more useful to readers of Homer. In his original preface to the supplement, Cunliffe explained that proper and place names had to be excluded from the Lexicon “chiefly on the ground of expense.” Although the Lexicon has enjoyed perennial popularity, scholars have long lamented the absence of “capitalized” name-forms in the Lexicon. By consolidating the two works into one handy single-volume format, this expanded edition fills the only gap in Cunliffe’s indispensable reference. In his preface to the expanded edition, James H. Dee explains the benefits of uniting the two dictionaries. In addition, Dee provides a brief list of errata and a helpful key to Cunliffe’s system of referencing the poems according to Greek letter.

Book excerpt: Homeric Epic and its Reception, comprising twelve chapter—some previously published but revised for this collection, and others appearing here in print for the first time—offers literary interpretations of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite. While some chapters closely study the diction, meter, style, and thematic resonance of particular passages and episodes in the Iliad and the Odyssey, others follow diverse pathways into the interpretation of the epics, including mythological allusion, intertextuality, the metrics of the Homeric hexameter, and the fundamental contrast between divinity and humanity. Also included are two chapters which focus on the work of Milman Parry and Ioannis Kakridis, founders of the two most fruitful twentieth-century scholarly approaches to Homeric scholarship: the study of the Iliad and the Odyssey as traditional oral formulaic poetry (Parry), and the study of the poems' adaptations and transformations of traditional mythology, folktales, and poetic motifs in accordance with their distinctive themes and poetic purposes (Kakridis). The volume draws to a close with three chapters which discuss some of the most compelling poetic and critical receptions of the Iliad and the Odyssey since the late nineteenth century, and the institutional reception of the epics in colleges and universities in the United States over the past two centuries. Written over a period of 45 years, this collection reflects the authors long-standing interest in, and scholarly and critical approaches to, the literary interpretation of Homeric poetry.
