Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Puritan Movement in Wales: From the Institution of the Church at Llanfaches in 1639 to the Expiry of the Propagation Act in 1653 At the National Eisteddfod of 1918, held at Neath, the Eisteddfod Association offered a prize of Fifty Pounds for the best work of original research, in Welsh or English, on any subject connected with Wales, in regard to its history, language, or literature. Several works were submitted to the adjudication of Dr. John Edward Lloyd, M.A., author of the "History of Wales," and the Essay now published was awarded the prize, and was declared to be worthy of publication. The extraordinary difficulties from which the country is suffering renders the production of new books all but impossible. In this instance, however, the substantial sum handed over to the Association for Eisteddfodic purposes, by the Committee of the Neath Eisteddfod, supplemented by a generous donation from the Proprietors of the Western Mail, coupled with the emphatic recommendation of Dr. Lloyd, has induced the Association to incur the present heavy expense of producing the "History of the Puritan Movement in Wales from 1639 to 1653." To all those who have assisted them in the enterprise, including the Neath Eisteddfod Committee and their Secretary, Mr. Philip Thomas, the Proprietors of the Western Mail, Dr. John Edward Lloyd, and particularly the author, Mr. Thomas Richards, who took infinite trouble in seeing his work through the press, and in securing minute accuracy for all his statements, the Committee of the National Eisteddfod Association desire to tender their most grateful thanks. They commend the volume to the serious perusal of all those who value work of real research in the hidden paths of Welsh life and Welsh history. Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Puritanism by : John Coffey
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Puritanism written by John Coffey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Puritan' was originally a term of contempt, and 'Puritanism' has often been stereotyped by critics and admirers alike. As a distinctive and particularly intense variety of early modern Reformed Protestantism, it was a product of acute tensions within the post-Reformation Church of England. But it was never monolithic or purely oppositional, and its impact reverberated far beyond seventeenth-century England and New England. This Companion broadens our understanding of Puritanism, showing how students and scholars might engage with it from new angles and uncover the surprising diversity that fermented beneath its surface. The book explores issues of gender, literature, politics and popular culture in addition to addressing the Puritans' core concerns such as theology and devotional praxis, and coverage extends to Irish, Welsh, Scottish and European versions of Puritanism as well as to English and American practice. It challenges readers to re-evaluate this crucial tradition within its wider social, cultural, political and religious contexts.
