Book excerpt: "This book is only an introduction to the history of the Philippines under Spanish and American rule." Thus informs author David Prescott Barrows in the preface of this second edition of A History of the Philippines, published in 1905, which is only within 5 years from the beginning of America's governance of the Southeast Asian archipelago. As such, this work receives the distinction of being among the very first definitive resources on Philippine history written in English. Mr. Barrows' historical account is written with the original intent of making it an educational reference for students in Philippine public schools. It begins with the author's examination of the country as a subject for historical study, comparing it to another Asian nation, Japan. This comparison is quite prophetic and not without irony because the American administration was superseded by the Japanese occupation during World War II. In the next chapter, he touches on ethnology, discussing the first settlers of the archipelago and how "Mohammedanism" found its place among the locals. It is quite odd that this topic is immediately followed by a concise run through Western history, most possibly in an attempt to illustrate the circumstances that contributed to the discovery and colonization of the Philippines. This same transition can also be observed in the later chapters, especially with the chapter on America and the Philippines. Over all, Mr. Barrows managed to relay facts in an objective manner, albeit with a decidedly favorable nod towards American rule, made obvious in his preface and in the chapter on American occupation. This is not surprising and is even expected. The early 1900s was a shaky period in Philippine history, where a firm and experienced hand was needed to run the country and get it back on its feet after its liberation from 300 years of Spanish rule. Students, as well as those seeking to learn about the history of this Asian country, will benefit from this concisely written edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philippine Islands It would be well, indeed, if all here at home could be led to join in the opinion of Americans in the Philip pines, of whatever party, that democratic principles of government must be considerably modified when the people to be governed have the racial qualities, tradi tions, and history of the Filipinos. Unless there be a unity of sentiment among the American people, an eager ness of spirit to solve the problem in the best possible way with the sole view of the welfare of the Filipino, the experiment now inaugurated will fail. The difficulties of the problem we are only now learning to appreciate; until the conditions are better known, we should suspend judgment and certainly be less prone to destructive criticism of the pioneer service now being performed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Long Ago in the Philippines Perhaps the result seems incommensurate with the labor expended, but it must be remembered that it is the first attempt to write the story of those days in verified detail. No secondary work could be depended upon. The field of Philippine history, as is well known, has never had the benefit of modern historical method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Philippines: For Use in Philippine Schools Ten years have passed since this work was adopted for the public schools of the Philip pines. These years, sown with fresh events, new ideals, and many changes in the administration of the government of the Philippines, make necessary a new and completely revised edition of this book. It has been necessary to omit and condense some of the material contained in the former editions, in order to make room for a chapter covering the past decade. The long service which this book has rendered seems to justify the selection of material and method of presentation employed in the former edition. The lapse of years, however, has brought changes which make it desirable to readjust the emphasis placed on both the more remote and the nearer past. The following remarks from the preface to the first edition are still an appropriate introduction to this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and the Philippines In View of these conditions, it is not remarkable that until very recently geographers have contented themselves with enumerating the islands as about twelve hundred, an estimate made several centuries ago. This was the estimate generally accepted when the Treaty of Paris was signed between Spain and the United States, for no one had ever taken the trouble to count them. Soon thereafter accurate surveys were undertaken, with the result that the number of known islands and islets was brought up to and it is believed that there are others not on any chart. Of this number only half are of enough im portance to be named, and of those bearing names less than one fourth are populated. More than 90 per cent. Of the total land area is contained in the eleven largest islands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Philippines His book as its title indicates, is intended I to portray the Philippines as they are today rather than as they have appeared in the trying crises through which they have passed. The history Of the Philippines has not heretofore been neglected. Their interesting past has been chronicled by such eminent writers as T6mas Comyn, John Foreman, F. R. G. S., Juan de la Concepcion, Martinez Zuniga, and many others; while their political (eco nomic) perplexities have been detailed at great length by almost half a score Of able writers. But of the Philippines to-day there are few sources to which the inquirer may turn for detailed information; he can find no book treating Of modern industrial conditions or interpreting the character of the people through the ready manner in which they are grasping a scheme of life which was unknown to them before the dawn of the twentieth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francisco the Filipino A number of years have elapsed since the American people took up the white man's burden in the Orient, and although thousands of Americans have visited our new possessions during this time, there are still many persons who think vaguely of the Philippines as a tiny group of islands somewhere in the Pa cific, inhabited by half savage people who wear little or no clothing and prefer dog meat to all other kinds of food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Era in the Philippines The writer does not profess to have solved the problem or to have foreseen all that may occur in the working out of its numerous and complicated factors. Where so many controverted questions are necessarily discussed, he cannot, of course, expect to escape criticism, especially from those who regard those questions from a different view point. But he has, at least, personally visited the Philippines, and studied the question on the ground in free consultation with all classes of people American, English, Spanish, Tagalog, Visayan, and Chinese, Protestant and Roman Catholic, as well as civil and military officials.
