Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Jews of Mobile The records of the Spanish period of Mobile colonial his tory, which extended from 1781 to 1813, do not reveal any references to Jews. If there were any here during this epoch, they have left no positive traces. The American period of Mobile history began in 1813. The chief sources for the early decades of the federal history are the files of the newspapers dating from 1821, and the records of deeds, marriages, wills and divorces. An examina tion of these sources revealed the names of many Jews who settled or stopped in Mobile during the early part of the nineteenth century. Many of these became later identified with the Jewish congregation, but, as has been true of the beginnings of Jewish communities the world over, many Jews drifted away from Jewish associations or intermarried from necessity. Some of these became the ancestors of prominent Christian families in Mobile and the South. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Spanning 350 years of Jewish experience in this country, A History of the Jews in America is an essential chronicle by the author of The Course of Modern Jewish History. With impressive scholarship and a riveting sense of detail, Howard M. Sachar tells the stories of Spanish marranos and Russian refugees, of aristocrats and threadbare social revolutionaries, of philanthropists and Hollywood moguls. At the same time, he elucidates the grand themes of the Jewish encounter with America, from the bigotry of a Christian majority to the tensions among Jews of different origins and beliefs, and from the struggle for acceptance to the ambivalence of assimilation.

Book excerpt: A landmark work of Jewish history and a worldwide phenomenon when it was first published, this masterpiece of Jewish history was translated in multiple languages and instantly become the de facto standard in the field. German academic HEINRICH GRAETZ (1817-1891) brings a sympathetic Jewish perspective to the story of his own people, offering readers today an affectionate, passionate history, not a detached, clinical one. Backed by impeccable scholarship and originally published in German across 11 volumes between 1853 and 1875, this six-volume English-language edition was abridged under the direction of the author, and brought to American readers by the Jewish Publication Society of America in 1891. It remains an important work of the study of the Jewish religion and people to this day. Volume I, subtitled From the Earliest Period to the Death of Simon the Maccabee (135 B.C.E), begins with the earliest inhabitants of Canaan, hereditary law, and the exodus from Egypt, and continues through the Judean colonies in Egypt, the overthrow of the Acra and the Hellenists, and the assassination of Simon.

Book excerpt: For much of the twentieth century, the New York Jewish deli rivaled-- and in some ways surpassed-- the synagogue as the primary gathering place for the Jewish community. The deli, argues Merwin, reached its full flowering not in the immigrant period but in the interwar era, when the children of Jewish immigrants celebrated the first flush of their success in America by downing sandwiches and cheesecake in theater district delis. But it was the kosher deli that followed Jews to the outer boroughs of the city, and became the most tangible symbol of their continuing desire to maintain a connection to their heritage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time The Author must add, that, although the Sacred Records of the Jews have been wonderfully, he cannot suppose that they have been miraculously. Preserved; so as to be exempt from those sligh accidental corruptions, or interpolations, whi writings, so far the oldest in the world, could no well have escaped. Much allowance must also be made for the essentially poetic spirit, and for the Oriental forms of speech, which pervade so large a portion of the Old Testament.
