Download or read book History of the Egyptian Revolution, Vol. 1 written by A. A. Paton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Egyptian Revolution, Vol. 1: From the Period of the Mamelukes to the Death of Mohammed Ali; From Arab and European Memoirs, Oral Tradition, and Local Research The motive of the present re-issue is to meet a wish that I should give some account of Damascus and Aleppo, corresponding to that of Cairo, at the close of this history. This additional matter is not a description of the modernized Damascus and Aleppo, but is strictly subordinate to the objects of the book, as it comprises matter chiefly illustrative of the age and generation of Mohammed Ali. The notes that furnished the German edition of my "Modern Syrians," are the basis of the additions. This enables me to offer, in an English dress, matter which I had considered "too heavy" for the English circulating libraries, but which more than one judge has considered curious in its way. Whether this new matter be good or bad, it is from native sources, as I have, generally speaking, avoided the too common practice of piracy from European predecessors and contemporaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Egyptian Revolution, From the Period of the Mamelukes to the Death of Mohammed Ali, Vol. 2: From Arab and European Memoirs, Oral Tradition, and Local Research That a strn gle should recommence between the Porte and the Mamelukes was scarcely avoidable. These inexcusable acts precipitated it. The sympathies of the British troops were estranged, and the Mamelukes, without being much injured, were stung with resent ment; so that throughout all the subsequent transactions we are reminded of the Old adage, that honesty is the best policy. Book Synopsis Qur'anic Matters by : Natalia K. Suit
Download or read book Qur'anic Matters written by Natalia K. Suit and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Qur'anic Matters, Natalia Suit explores the materiality of books, focusing on the mushaf. With its paper, binding, ink, and script, the mushaf is not simply a carrier of the Qur'anic text but, by the virtue of its material body, it also has the ability to engender reformulations of religious knowledge and practice. Reading the Qur'an on a screen of a phone, for example, does not require the same forms of ritual ablutions as reading a printed text. The rules of purity limiting the access to the Qur'anic text for menstruating woman change when the Qur'anic text is mediated by digital bytes instead of paper. Qur'anic Matters spans the time between two important technological shifts-the introduction of printed Qur'anic books in Egypt in the early nineteenth century and the digitization of the Qur'an almost two centuries later. Throughout, Natalia Suit weaves together the theological, legal, economic, and social “presences” of the Qur'anic books into a single account. She argues that the message and the materiality of the object are not separate from each other, nor are they separate from the human bodies with which they come in contact.

Download or read book Napoleon's Egypt written by Juan Cole and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vivid and timely history, Juan Cole tells the story of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt. Revealing the young general's reasons for leading the expedition against Egypt in 1798 and showcasing his fascinating views of the Orient, Cole delves into the psychology of the military titan and his entourage. He paints a multi-faceted portrait of the daily travails of the soldiers in Napoleon's army, including how they imagined Egypt, how their expectations differed from what they found, and how they grappled with military challenges in a foreign land. Cole ultimately reveals how Napoleon's invasion, the first modern attempt to invade the Arab world, invented and crystallized the rhetoric of liberal imperialism.
