Book excerpt: While many historians take the view that Japanese philosophy only started with the Meiji Restoration and the entrance of Western culture into Japan, Hajime Nakamura demonstrates that there has been a long history of philosophy in Japan prior to the Meiji. Book Synopsis From Taoism to Einstein by : Olof G. Lidin
Download or read book From Taoism to Einstein written by Olof G. Lidin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ki emerged first and is the thread that runs through the millennia of Chinese philosophy. Ri was added later in Sung times and, together, ki and ri became the mainstay and core of Chinese beliefs in Sun (960-1279), Ming (1279-1644) and Ch’ing (1644-1911) times. In this remarkable and inspirational study, researched over many years, the author takes the view that ki can profitably be compared with European philosophy. In China, the ki thread appears as an original ‘primal ki’ (genki), which is the source of all things and affairs. The search is for the whole. In Greece, and later in Europe, the thinking goes in the opposite direction: it searches for the exact truth in the independent units of the cosmos, the atoms, the truth being found in the part. The study has three separate but interrelated parts. Part I delineates the ki and ri philosophy as it developed in China; Part II presents Confucian study and learning in Tokugawa Japan (1600-1868); Part III finishes with conclusions about things East and West and the situation in today’s world. From Taoism to Einstein will have wide appeal to students of Eastern religion and philosophy, as well as students of East Asian history and political science, and Chinese and Japanese studies in general.
Book Synopsis The Bodymind Experience in Japanese Buddhism by : David Edward Shaner
Download or read book The Bodymind Experience in Japanese Buddhism written by David Edward Shaner and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pioneering study, David Shaner uses the resources of phenomenology to penetrate Buddhist philosophy in terms of Kūkai and Dōgen. In addition to this original and rigorous methodology, his work offers insights into some fundamental difficulties intrinsic to comparative studies. The problem of the relation between body and mind is a prime example. Shaner's observations shed a brilliant light on these traditional antinomies as they may be resolved or, more accurately, dissolved when seen in their appropriate contexts. In addressing these issues, the study also contributes to the understanding of common features that underlie the various doctrines of Japanese Buddhism. This work will appeal to both East and West phenomenologists, philosophers interested in the mind-body problem, scholars of comparative philosophy, and students of Japanese philosophy and religion.

Book Synopsis Nanzan Guide to Japanese Religions by : Paul L. Swanson
Download or read book Nanzan Guide to Japanese Religions written by Paul L. Swanson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-10-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For updates online, visit the Nanzan Guide site at Nanzan Library of Asian Religion and Culture. The Nanzan Guide to Japanese Religions combines, for the first time in any language, state-of-the-field theoretical and critical discussions with concrete resources students and scholars need to conduct research on Japanese religions. Even seasoned scholars typically approach their research in an unsystematic manner, becoming familiar with a particular area of inquiry while remaining largely unaware of what exists in the rest of the field. This inefficient method hinders particularly less-experienced researchers and circumscribes their lines of inquiry. The Nanzan Guide provides both beginners and specialists with a reference that will serve as a basic introduction to Japanese religions and allow them to conduct research more proficiently and in greater depth. Overlapping and thought-provoking chapters, written by leading specialists, offer a variety of perspectives on the complicated and multifaceted field of Japanese religions. The essays are divided into four sections: religious traditions (Japanese religions in general, Shinto, Buddhism, folk religion, new religions, Christianity); the history of Japanese religions (ancient, classical, medieval, early modern, modern, contemporary); major themes (symbolism, ritual and the arts, literature and scripture, state and religion, geography and environment, intellectual history, gender); and "practical" essays (finding references and using libraries, working with archive collections, conducting fieldwork). A chronology of religion in Japanese history is also provided.

Book Synopsis Japanese Moral Education Past and Present by : Yoshimitsu Khan
Download or read book Japanese Moral Education Past and Present written by Yoshimitsu Khan and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the history and development of Japanese moral education, and analyzes and compares current moral education with the concepts of the Imperial Rescript on Education (1890) and the shushin moral education of prewar Japan. The Rescript contains Confucian and Shinto precepts and was to become the codification of the moral standards of the Japanese way of life in pre-surrender Japan. Despite the attempts of the Japanese education system to embrace democratic principles, postwar dotoku moral education has been essentially the same as that of the prewar system. The author concludes that Confucian ethics is still the engine of Japanese social cohesion and dynamics, and predicts that it will continue to be so for generations to come. Japan needs to find a way to converge the long-held Confucian ideology with more democratic ideals and fairness to all people through moral education.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Qi by : Kaibara Ekken
Download or read book The Philosophy of Qi written by Kaibara Ekken and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Record of Great Doubts emphasizes the role of qi in achieving a life of engagement with other humans, with the larger society, and with nature as a whole. Rather than encourage transcendental escapism or quietism, Ekken articulates a philosophy of material force as a basis of living a life of commitment to the world. In this spirit, moral cultivation is not an isolated or a self-centered preoccupation, but an activity that occurs within the dynamic forces of nature and amid the rigorous demands of society. In this context, a vitalism of qi is an emergent force, not only providing the philosophical grounding for this vibrant interaction but also giving a basis for an investigation of the natural world that plumbs the principle within things. Ekken thus aimed to articulate a creative and dynamic milieu for moral education, political harmony, social coherence, and agricultural sustainability. The Record of Great Doubts embodies Ekken's profound commitment to Confucian ideas and practices as a method for establishing an integrative ethical vision, one he hoped would guide Japan through a new period of peace and stability. A major philosophical treatise in the Japanese Neo-Confucian tradition, The Record of Great Doubts illuminates a crucial chapter in East Asian intellectual history.
Download or read book Inoue Enryo written by Rainer Schulzer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive treatment of Inoue Enry?, a pioneer of modern Buddhism and a key figure in the reception of Western philosophy in East Asia. Rainer Schulzer provides the first comprehensive study, in English, of the modern Japanese philosopher Inoue Enry? (18581919). Enry? was a key figure in several important intellectual trends in Meiji Japan, including the establishment of academic philosophy, the public campaign against superstition, the permeation of imperial ideology, and the emergence of modern Japanese Buddhism. As one of the most widely read intellectuals of his time and one of the first Japanese authors ever translated into Chinese, an understanding of Enry?s work and influence is indispensable for understanding modern East Asian intellectual history. His role in spreading the terminology of modern East Asian humanities reveals how later thinkers such as Nishida Kitar? and Suzuki T. Daisetsu emerged; while his key principles, Love of Truth and Protection of Country, illustrate the tensions inherent in Enry?s enlightenment views and his dedication to the rise of the Japanese empire. The book also presents a systematic reconstruction of what was the first attempt to give Buddhism a sound philosophical foundation for the modern world. This book is filled with interesting and important details about the unfolding of Enry?s life and the formation of his major works. Schulzer also develops broader themes in terms of Japans intellectual and sociopolitical encounters with the West in light of the advent of its modern self-definition in the context of being part of a global arena for the first time. Book Synopsis Buddhism and Christianity in Japan by : Notto R. Thelle
Download or read book Buddhism and Christianity in Japan written by Notto R. Thelle and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern dialogue between Buddhism and Christianity in Japan is reaching new depths and insights and is being recognized today as a challenging and promising point of contact between two cultures. This volume is based on the premise that an understanding of the past is important for meaningful interaction in the present. By placing the Buddhist-Christian dialogue in historical perspective, the author provides an essential element for critical and creative reflection on today's dialogue. Thelle's historical examination begins with the arrival of Francis Xavier in 1549, which initiated the "Christian century." However, his main emphasis is on the nineteenth century, when relations between the two religions moved from confrontation to conciliation. The opening of Japan in 1854 initiated a confrontation that was more than a religious conflict; the meeting of the two faiths was part of an all-inclusive cultural clash. The confrontation of Buddhism and Christianity is interpreted in a broad cultural and sociopolitical context and reveals how strongly both religions were influenced by the social and ideological upheavals in nineteenth-century Japan. The vital issue was which religion would become the spiritual basis for the "new" Japan. Christianity, introduced as the spiritual backbone of Western power, was associated with ideas of modernization and democracy. Buddhism, regarded as part of the old culture, was in serious crisis. But the conflict was not resolved in victory and defeat. Radical changes took place within the two religions, and by the turn of the century confrontation had moved toward conciliation. The author examines the origins of emerging peaceful dialogue and uncovers the complex process by which it grew out of an atmosphere of animosity and distrust. Thelle's central themes are the connection between Christian expansion and Buddhist anti-Christian campaigns, religion and nationalism, Christian impact on Buddhist reform movements, attempts at unifying the two faiths into a new religiosity, and the development of an indigenous Japanese theology. He throws light on cross-cultural interactions far beyond the specialized area of religion and theology. With its broad cultural and sociopolitical scope, this book will interest all students of Japanese history and culture.
Book Synopsis The East in the West by : Jack Goody
Download or read book The East in the West written by Jack Goody and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East in the West reassesses Western views of Asia. Traditionally many European historians and theorists have seen the societies of the East as 'static' or 'backward'. Jack Goody challenges these assumptions, beginning with the notion of a special Western rationality which enabled 'us' and not 'them' to modernise. He then turns to book-keeping, which several social and economic historians have seen as intrinsic to capitalism, arguing that there was in fact little difference between East and West in terms of mercantile activity. Other factors said to inhibit the East's development, such as the family and forms of labour, have also been greatly exaggerated. This Eurocentrism both fails to explain the current achievements of the East, and misunderstands Western history. The East in the West starts to redress the balance, and so marks a fundamental shift in our view of Western and Eastern history and society.
