Book excerpt: Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design brings together the best of designer Michael Bierut's critical writing—serious or humorous, flattering or biting, but always on the mark. Bierut is widely considered the finest observer on design writing today. Covering topics as diverse as Twyla Tharp and ITC Garamond, Bierut's intelligent and accessible texts pull design culture into crisp focus. He touches on classics, like Massimo Vignelli and the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as newcomers, like McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and color-coded terrorism alert levels. Along the way Nabakov's Pale Fire; Eero Saarinen; the paper clip; Celebration, Florida; the planet Saturn; the ClearRx pill bottle; and paper architecture all fall under his pen. His experience as a design practitioner informs his writing and gives it truth. In Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design, designers and nondesigners alike can share and revel in his insights.

Download or read book Old Jube written by Dr. Millard K. Bushong and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1955, this book tells the story of General Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894), a lawyer and Confederate general in the American Civil War. He served in the Eastern Theater of the war for the entire conflict, as a division commander under Stonewall Jackson and Richard Stoddert Ewell, and in later actions commanded a corps. He was the Confederate commander in key battles of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, including a daring raid to the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The articles written by him for the Southern Historical Society in the 1870s established the Lost Cause point of view as a long-lasting literary and cultural phenomenon. This book covers General Early’s rise from second Lieutenant during the Seminole War to General. Richly illustrated throughout by Timothy T. Pohmer. “I first became interested in writing a biography of General Jubal Early while I was teaching history at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. The more I investigated this subject, the more I was convinced that for some unexplainable reason historians have neglected one of the great heroes of the Confederacy. In order to acquaint the reader better with one of the South’s almost-forgotten generals, I undertook this study.”—Millard Kessler Bushong, Preface

Download or read book To the Point written by George Pappas and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993-07-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume goes beyond military personalities to cover the first 100 years of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Pappas focuses on the institution itself--describing how the Academy was formed and who its early leaders were. He tells us of the central role of Jonathan Williams and Sylvanus Thayer in ensuring that West Point would become both a military academy and a quality engineering school--despite many problems in its early years. Emphasis is placed on descriptions of events found in letters and diaries of cadets, officers, and family members. Myths and legends about the Academy without any factual basis are thoroughly debunked. Pappas also recounts the development of the instructors, the curriculum, and the cadet; the importance of honor; the creation of a library; the role of discipline; daily exams and weekly academic reports; life in the barracks; Benny Haven's Tavern--these and many other vignettes of West Point are brought to life in an unparalleled writing style. Including numerous photographs and maps, this book will both fascinate and teach. A must for all military historians, buffs, West Point graduates, and veterans.

Book Synopsis The 104th Field Artillery Regiment of the New York National Guard, 1916-1919 by : Pamela A. Bakker
Download or read book The 104th Field Artillery Regiment of the New York National Guard, 1916-1919 written by Pamela A. Bakker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book chronicles the extensive training and heroic service of the New York National Guard's 104th Field Artillery Regiment from the period of 1916 to 1919. The regiment, initially called the 1st Field Artillery Regiment, served as border patrol in Texas during the Mexican Punitive Expedition in 1916, and trained at the gunnery field at La Gloria, Texas. During World War I, they trained by the Glassy Mountains at Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina, and then at the School of Fire of Camp de Souge near Bordeaux, France. Because of this extensive training, elements of the 27th Division were splintered off and placed within a number of other divisions. The 52nd Field Artillery Brigade, under which the 104th Field Artillery Regiment served, was attached to the 33rd Division as their artillery, and then the 79th Division for the entire Meuse-Argonne Offensive near Verdun. Using field diaries, photos and letters, their story of courage under extreme conditions including enemy shelling and gas is recorded and their memory preserved.
