Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who have lived beside the great falls at the Tallapoosa River have witnessed and participated in great changes in Tallassee, Alabama. In the 1800s, the legendary Tecumseh paid a visit, and one of the first industrial-based Southern cities was founded and became a supply center for the Confederacy. The next century ushered in prosperity, expansion, and electricity. During the modern age, the people of Tallassee also met the challenges of floods and storms, and again acted as a supply center--this time for two world wars. This volume's intriguing images and documents showcase the history of Tallassee, the city by the great falls. At the year of Tallassee's centennial celebration, 2008, this book guides residents and visitors through Tallassee's great changes.

Download or read book Legend of the Tallassee Carbine written by Larry Williamson and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South was desperate in May of 1864. The forces against them had their eyes on Richmond, its government, and its manufacturing capability, especially its armories. The small town of Tallassee, Alabama, far from action and safely sited on the banks of the Tallapoosa River, was selected to craft the new cavalry carbine Richmond could not. In the closing week of the war, the estimated five hundred carbines produced were ordered shipped to Macon. They left Tallassee and disappeared from history, never to resurface. Only ten are known to exist today. Larry Williamson's premise for their loss is both unique and believable, even as it may be fanciful speculation. His characters are enjoyable, noble, and sweet, especially the young confederate soldier and his aspiring Juliet, the daughter of Benjamin Micou, the historical president of the Tallassee mill company.
Book Synopsis The Second Creek War by : John T. Ellisor
Download or read book The Second Creek War written by John T. Ellisor and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally viewed the Creek War of 1836 as a minor police action centered on rounding up the Creek Indians for removal to Indian Territory. Using extensive archival research, John T. Ellisor demonstrates that in fact the Second Creek War was neither brief nor small. Indeed, armed conflict continued long after peace was declared and the majority of Creeks had been sent west. Ellisor’s study also broadly illuminates southern society just before the Indian removals, a time when many blacks, whites, and Natives lived in close proximity in the Old Southwest. In the Creek country, also called New Alabama, these ethnic groups began to develop a pluralistic society. When the 1830s cotton boom placed a premium on Creek land, however, dispossession of the Natives became an economic priority. Dispossessed and impoverished, some Creeks rose in armed revolt both to resist removal west and to drive the oppressors from their ancient homeland. Yet the resulting Second Creek War that raged over three states was fueled both by Native determination and by economic competition and was intensified not least by the massive government-sponsored land grab that constituted Indian removal. Because these circumstances also created fissures throughout southern society, both whites and blacks found it in their best interests to help the Creek insurgents. This first book-length examination of the Second Creek War shows how interethnic collusion and conflict characterized southern society during the 1830s.

Book Synopsis Lake Martin, Alabama's Crown Jewel by : Elizabeth D. Schafer
Download or read book Lake Martin, Alabama's Crown Jewel written by Elizabeth D. Schafer and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through many decades, Lake Martin, a symbol of sustenance, has enticed generations of residents, vacationers, and modern retirees to its welcoming shores. This picturesque lake, shaped like a dragon protecting its territory, has witnessed droughts, tornadoes, fishing tournaments, boat races, and even World War II aircraft crashes. Surrounded by its own unique history, Lake Martin also reflects the dynamic personalities of those who sacrificed childhood homes and family land to bring dreams of a prosperous future to fruition. Before the Tallapoosa River was dammed to feed Lake Martin's waters, it was an ideal environment for the Native Americans who resided on land now submerged. The land's history is rife with discord as British soldiers and Georgia Rangers resisted French spies in the early 1700s and migrant settlers defended their homefront during the Civil War. The Martin Dam became a state landmark by 1927, generating hydroelectric power while memorializing the 31-mile-long lake as the world's largest man-made body of water at the time. It was not long before Lake Martin evolved into a community enjoying unparalleled growth as a vacation site and permanent home for Americans who discovered the satisfaction lakeside living could provide. Lake Martin: Alabama's Crown Jewel chronicles the trials and triumphs of the people who created one of today's leading retirement communities through courageous choices and determination. The story is told through compelling narrative and evocative images, many of which have not been widely published.
