Book excerpt: Despite its position at the heart of Europe and its quintessentially European nature, Switzerland's history is often overlooked within the English-speaking world. This comprehensive and engaging history of Switzerland traces the historical and cultural development of this fascinating but neglected European country from the end of the Dark Ages up to the present. The authors focus on the initial Confederacy of the Middle Ages; the religious divisions which threatened it after 1500 and its surprising survival amongst Europe's monarchies; the turmoil following the French Revolution and conquest, which continued until the Federal Constitution of 1848; the testing of the Swiss nation through the late nineteenth century and then two World Wars and the Depression of the 1930s; and the unparalleled economic and social growth and political success of the post-war era. The book concludes with a discussion of the contemporary challenges, often shared with neighbours, that shape the country today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Switzerland Having been for some years engaged upon the Swiss State Papers preserved among the archives of the Public Record Office, it occurred to me that it would be of great interest to me in connection with that work, and possibly of some general use, to make an English translation of a thoroughly good and trustworthy history of Switzerland. Finding that Dr. Dandliker had published a short history of that country, as well as the larger one in three volumes, I decided (with the author's consent) to use the smaller work for the purpose, and have now completed the translation of the second edition, especially revised and annotated by Dr. Dandliker. I trust that it may help to arouse more interest among English readers in the past of the little land whose beauties are a never-failing source of pleasure to English travellers. The translation has been made in the spare moments of a busy life, and my only regret is that my knowledge of the subject has, I fear, been too limited to admit of my doing full justice to Dr. Dandliker's very excellent work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Invasion of Switzerland: By the French, and the Destruction of the Democratical Republics of Schwitz, Uri and Unterwalden This work was originally written in German, and was printed at Berne, at the office of Gessner, son to the celebrated author of the Idylls. It was received with great avidity in Switzerland and Germany, and was translated into French; from which version, which is asserted to be perfectly faithful, the present has been made. The author, Henry Zschokke, advantageously known by several esteemed works in German literature, was nominated in 1798 by the Helvetic directory commissioner of government in the small cantons, and charged with the office of healing, as much as lay in his power, the wounds inflicted by war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy, Switzerland and Germany Our little friend Barron, six years of age, delights to hear about my beautiful trip to Europe, but he invariably closes our tete-a-tete saying, emphatically and defiantly, "But there's nothing in Europe as good as America." I commend his patriotism, yet am pleased that more than once he has asked his mother to carry him to Europe "to see St. Peter's, the Sea of Ice, and that big St. Bernard dog." It is with the hope of giving pleasure to many young friends, also those of larger growth, that this little volume is published. I would that it might even strengthen the desire of some people unto determination to see the invaluable art-treasures and to enjoy the charming scenery of Europe, enhanced by association with the heroic deeds and beautiful romances of many centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A harrowing memoir revealing the horrors that occurred within a little-known prison camp in Switzerland, by a POW who survived it. During WWII, 1,517 members of US aircrews were forced to seek asylum in Switzerland. Most neutral countries found reason to release US airmen from internment, but Switzerland took its obligations under the Hague Convention more seriously than most. The airmen were often incarcerated in local jails, then transferred to prison camps. The worst of these camps was Wauwilermoos, where at least 161 US airmen were sent for the honorable offense of escaping. To this hellhole came Dan Culler, the author of this incredible account of suffering and survival. Prisoners slept on lice-infested straw, were malnourished, and had virtually no hygiene facilities or access to medical care. But worse, the commandant of Wauwilermoos was a diehard Swiss Nazi. He allowed the mainly criminal occupants of the camp to torture and rape Dan Culler with impunity. After many months of such treatment, starving and ravaged by disease, he was finally aided by a British officer. Betrayal dominated his cruel fate—by the American authorities, by the Swiss, and, in a last twist, in a second planned escape that turned out to be a trap. But Dan Culler’s courage and determination kept him alive. Finally making it back home, he found he had been abandoned again. Political expediency meant there was no such place as Wauwilermoos. He had never been there, so he had never been a POW and didn‘t qualify for any POW benefits or medical or mental treatment for his many physical and emotional wounds. His struggle to make his peace with his past forms the final part of the story. An introduction and notes from military historian Rob Morris provide historical background and context, including recent efforts to recognize the suffering of those incarcerated in Switzerland and afford them full POW status.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Cantons of Switzerland: Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri, Unterwalden The gulden was then worth francs. Since the middle of the fifteenth century the value of gold has depreciated at least six times, and the debasement of the lower values by coining more schillings from the same quantity of silver) in the Confederation made a great reduction in the value of money. It may be considered that the gulden in 1500 was worth twenty-five times as much as at present. The relation of the value of the gulden to gold remained practically unchanged, since in the earlier times twelve gulden were equal to the louis d'or of twenty-four francs; and at the present day the English sovereign twenty-five francs, about twelve gulden. When we read, therefore, that the men of Gersau redeemed themselves from the overlordship of the family you Moos for 690 pounds of pfennings (in this case twenty plapparts went to the pound), this sum was equal to 690 x 20 plapparts, and this at 30 plapparts to the gulden made 460 gulden; and the present value of this sum would be 460 x 25 gulden= gulden, about £960 of our money. When the inhabitants of Hergiswyl redeemed themselves, in 1378, for 708 gulden, this sum at the present day would be represented by gulden, and would be about £1500 of our money. The depreciation here assumed may perhaps be excessive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swiss Internment of Prisoners of War: An Experiment in International Humane Legislation and Administration The internment of sick and wounded prisoners of war in neutral countries is an event without precedent in past his tory. It has been tried for the first time in Switzerland in the course of recent months. Considering that the experience thus gained may prove of interest and perhaps of help in the United States, the Swiss Commission, at present in this country, has brought with it a hitherto unpublished official report on the subject. This report, by Hauser, the surgeon-general of the Swiss Army, who has been in charge of the internment in Switzerland of Austrian, Belgian, English, French, and German prisoners of war, tells the story of this great experience from its origin until the end of January, 1917.
