The Gossner (Berlin II.) Missionary Society in India. "Thou old Adam in me die!" "Live Lord Jesus!" The Gossner Society, though not strictly Lutheran, has a great many Lutherans in its service. Pastor Gossner organized the Society in order to train missionaries for different missions. The founder withdrew from the Berlin Society because his plain habits and practical spirit did not approve of the extensive educational methods, the commodious quarters for the students and the society. He held that missionaries ought to support themselves by industrial work. With these objects in view, he in 1836 undertook the instruction of young men, and by 1837 he had seven married and four single missionaries prepared to labor in the foreign field at their own expense. The first missionaries proceeded to South Australia, under the direction of Dr. Lang, a Scotch minister. The Scotch Church on the island promised to make up the deficiency in case the missionaries could not provide for their whole support. An effort to plant a Christian colony at Calcutta proved a failure. A second colony followed. While in that great city, uncertain which way to turn, the missionaries noticed men of a peculiar type among the coolies. Upon inquiry, they learned that they were Kols from Bengal. Lutheran ism is a mode Of viewing and receiving and living the truths of Christianity; or rather of viewing and receiving and living in mystical union with Him Who is the begin ning and end of all these truths. The peculiarities which mark its relation to Christ determine peculiarities With respect to other Objects. The principles underlying the doctrinal position reappear in the Spheres Of ethics and liturgics, of homiletics and church government. Even the faith Of a great sculptor or a great musical composer will express itself in a different way according to the peculiar ities of the confession by which his religious life has been nourished and trained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from White Unto Harvest: A Survey of Lutheran United Mission, the China Mission of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America In giving a short survey of the field, it may be in order to mention that the field, as we now have it, was acquired and occupied at different periods by the three former missions, now united into one body. The choosing of a mission field was necessarily one of the most important questions that the first arrivals of the American Norwegian China Mission and of the Hauge Synod Mission had to decide. At the start these two parties worked together and were considered one body, but later on separated into two missions. The pioneers sought the advice of older missionaries, and the late venerable Dr. Griffith John pointed out a field in northwestern Hupeh, on the Han River, with Fancheng as a starting point. Both missions decided on this field. The former Hauge Synod Mission began its work at Fancheng and made this city its headquarters. From Fancheng its missionaries extended their work westward to Taipingtien, Tsi-ho, and gradually occupied the greater part of the Kuohenghsien district. Later on they stationed foreign workers in Sinyeh and Tengchow, Honan, and also by means of native helpers, opened work in Tanghsien and in a number of market towns in the district. This gave the Hauge Synod Mission a field located partly in Honan and partly in Hupeh, about ninety miles in length and fifty miles in width.
