Book excerpt: A fascinating volume, Old Louisiana chronicles much of the state's history. Vignettes depict the early French settlers, the later Spanish rulers, and the rise and collapse of the great plantation era. Bringing to light old diaries, letters, and other rare sources, Saxon creates a sensitive and realistic portrait of this charming, colorful state and its people. The reader meets daring pioneers, hot-tempered duellists, aristocratic planters, rough-hewn river men, and Creole beauties. Both of these classic works include E. H. Suydam's haunting, detailed illus-trations, which bring Saxon's prose to life. Lyle Saxon (1891-1946) is renowned as one of Louisiana's foremost authors. He was the central figure in the state's literary community during the 1920s and 1930s, and was well-known as a raconteur and bon vivant. He divided his time between his house in New Orleans and a cottage on the Melrose Plantation near Nachitoches. Among his other works are Father Mississippi, Lafitte the Pirate, Children of Strangers, and Joe Gilmore and His Friends . He collaborated with Edward Dreyer and Robert Tallant on the perennial favorite Gumbo Ya-Ya . During the 1930s he headed the Louisiana WPA Writers Project, which produced the WPA Guide to Louisiana and the WPA Guide to New Orleans.

Book excerpt: "The NORMAND Family of Louisiana" is a two-volume encyclopedia of information about the lives of the Normand family from France to Canada and thence to Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, written by family historian Mark J. Normand. Volume one, "The History from Normandy to Avoyelles," is 315 pages filled with everything you want to know about our colonial ancestors, from the birth of Francois-Simon Le Normand (1570-1630) in Igé, Normandy to the death of Jean-Pierre Normand (1742-1824) in Avoyelles, Louisiana. It re-creates the historical setting for each of the family forefathers. We learn what motivated Gervais Le Normand (1597-1665) to pull up roots in Igé, France and plant them in Quebec, New France; of the family trials of Jean Le Normand (1637-1706) whose life ends mysteriously when his body is found trampled and bloody in a field of peas; the adventures of Charles Le Normand (1663-1715), the successful coureur de bois, roofer, and litigator in Quebec; the zigzag itinerary of Jean-Gaspard Normand (1712-1788) from Quebec to Montreal down to the American colonies at Fort Duquesne, back the Montreal, and finally to Louisiana; and Jean-Pierre Normand (1742-1824) who built a successful plantation and portage on the Red River, and began the great Normand family of Avoyelles, Louisiana. The book ends in the descendancy to the fifth generation from Jean-Gaspard Normand. The book also features Louisiana families who married into the Normand and Gaspard families: Vicknair, Matherne, Dupuy, Dauzat, Bonnette, Bordelon, Mayeux, Brouillette, Bernard, Couvillion, and many more. Debbie Melendy Norman, who helped edit the book, writes in her forward, "Mark's writing is lively and detailed, as he comes from a long line of raconteurs who have preserved hundreds of years of family memory. A gifted researcher, he has mined the archives of the United States, Canada and France for additional nuggets of information that he then works into the pure gold of story."

This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1808 the legislature of the Louisiana territory appointed two men to translate the Digest of the Laws in Force in the Territory of Orleans (or, as it was called at the time, simply the Code) from the original French into English. Those officials, however, did not reveal who received the commission, and the translators never identified themselves. Indeed, the “translators of 1808” guarded their secret so well that their identities have remained unknown for more than two hundred years. Their names, personalities, careers, and credentials, indeed everything about them, have been a missing chapter in Louisiana legal history. In this volume, Vernon Valentine Palmer, through painstaking research, uncovers the identity of the translators, presents their life stories, and evaluates their translation in the context of the birth of civil law in Louisiana. One consequence of the translators' previous anonymity has been that the translation itself has never been fully examined before this study. To be sure, the translation has been criticized and specific errors have been pointed out, but Palmer's study is the first general evaluation that considers the translation's goals, the Louisiana context, its merits and demerits, its innovations, failures, and successes. It thus allows us to understand how much and in what ways the translators affected the future course of Louisiana law. The Lost Translators, through painstaking research, uncovers the identity of the translators, presents their life stories, and evaluates their translation in the context of the birth of civil law in Louisiana.
