Employment Of Cavalry In A Campaign. ALTHOUGH the sphere of cavalry on the battlefield has undoubtedly been much narrowed, it is a question whether its use in the other operations of a campaign is not likely to be much enlarged in the future. The great power which the new firearms give to the mounted riflemen have increased their effectiveness so materially as to enable them to be usefully employed far oftener than under the old system. The railway, telegraphic, and other communications of an army are so important, and so essential to be preserved, that a force of horsemen are as necessary to guard them as they are useful to threaten and attack those of the enemy. A large force of mounted riflemen, accompanied by a few pieces of artillery, can almost live on the country, and by the rapidity and secrecy of their movements, can avoid and escape large bodies, while, from their armament and fighting capacity, they can either attack smaller forces or defend themselves if assailed. At the opening of a campaign these horsemen should be sent on as outposts or advanced guards. They should be under a general of cavalry, and should be instructed to push boldly on in an impenetrable line, strong but flexible. This belt of horsemen, self-reliant, able to defend or to attack, not to be checked by small parties of infantry under cover, should sweep forward, feeling the whole country on the way, and moving on until the enemy's advanced posts are struck. Once this is done the touch should never be lost. A firm pressure should force back the weak points, a stern resistance should hold in check the strong points, and without much risk, the position and strength of the enemy should be pretty well ascertained. There is nothing to prevent a...

Book excerpt: 2006 Scholar's Bookshelf reprint edition of the London: 1877 edition which remains unmatched for its detailed history of cavalry from the days of the Scythian horsemen to the era of the Franco-German War of 1870-1871, this work remains one of the most comprehensive histories of the cavalry ever written, with details about how various nations invented and managed cavalry units, how tactics and strategies evolved, especially in Rome, the effects of the invention of firearms, the role of cavalry in the Crusades and medieval Europe, and cavalries under Frederick the Great, Napoleon, and the American Civil War. The work concludes with a section on organization, armament, and the employment of cavalry in ""modern warfare,"" as the twentieth-century neared, when, as the author could not foresee, heavy weapons would spell the end of traditional cavalry.
