Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Modern Times More striking characteristics of the book will probably be found in the emphasis laid upon educational institu tions and practices, rather than upon theoretical develop ment; and in the larger place given to American educa tion. The account of each educational movement has included at least an attempt to trace its in uence upon the content, method, and organization Of education in this country, while three chapters have been devoted exclusively to the rise of our educational system. For this somewhat special point of View, I trust that no apology is needed, as the book is intended primarily for use in the United States, and will be of service to our teachers largely as it succeeds in focusing the educational progress of this country. It will be quite possible, however, for those readers in England and other coun tries, who have been so hospitable in their reception of my former works, to neglect or curtail these parts of the book, and still have a body of material sufficient to represent satisfactorily the history of education during the past two centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States This book is intended for use in the upper grammar grades and in the junior high school. Its authors have borne in mind the double fact that While American schools still retain - it is to be hoped will always retain - a wholesome variety in their detail of instruction, they are nevertheless approaching a national conformity in main features. Espe cially is this true in history. The time for a school course in American history truly nationalized, broadly speaking, both in matter and method has arrived. The recent discussions of the subject in the National Education Association, in the American Historical Association, and by a host of individual critics have cleared the atmosphere as never before. The World War has worked as a powerful solvent to precipitate a new consensus of opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States On the study of mathematics in elementary schools of the American colonies but little can be said. In early colonial days schools did not exist except in towns and in the more densely settled districts; and oven where schools were kept, the study of mathematics was often not pursued at all, or consisted simply in learning to count and to perform the fundamental operations with integral numbers. Thus, in Hampstead, N. H., in 1750, it was voted "to hire a school-master for six mouths in ye summer season to teach ye children to read and write." Arithmetic had not yet been introduced there. As late as the beginning of this century there were schools in country districts in which arithmetic was not taught at all. Bronson Alcott, the prominent educator, born in Massachusetts in 1799, in describing the schools of his boyhood, says: "Until within a few years no studies have been permitted in the day school but spelling, reading, and writing. Arithmetic was taught by a few instructors one or two evenings in a week. But in spite of the most determined opposition arithmetic is now permitted in the day school." This was in Massachusetts at the beginning of this century. In secondary schools, "ciphering" was taught during colonial times, which consisted generally in drilling students in the manipulation of integral numbers. He was an exceptional teacher who possessed a fair knowledge of "fractions" and the "rule of three," and if some pupil of rare genius managed to master fractions, or even pass beyond the "rule of three," then he was judged a finished mathematician. The best teachers of those days were college students or college graduates who engaged in teaching as a stepping-stone to something better. An example of this class of teachers was John Adams, afterwards President of the United States. Immediately after graduating at Harvard and before entering upon the study of law, he presided, for a few years, over the grammar school at Worcester. It need not be said that it is impossible to describe within the limits of this volume the whole history of education in Virginia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Girls in the United States In order to fit myself for this work, I devoted some time to a course of reading in American educational literature. This is abundant, and while travelling in America, I was able, through the kindness of the various school and college authorities, to form a somewhat wide collection of books and pamphlets dealing with the various aspects of the question; a bibliography of these and other works read is given below. I have thus been able, to some extent, to understand the aims of Amuioan educators, and check the observations I made in the schools themselves. I have also quoted from reports and other writings of Americans in order to put their views before English readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Students' History of the United States As an elementary text book on United States History, the author, in the preparation of this book has endeavored to use language which is clear and concise, yet simple, to such an extent that he hopes it will appeal to the reader. Teachers have for some time recognized the fact that the greatest evil of modern education is the waste of brain energy without an adequate result in intellectual development, and experience has taught that in no study is this more true than in the study of history. It has therefore been the object, in the preparation of this book, to remove all such obstacles, yet at the same time to furnish material sufficient for the cultivation and development of the faculties of Observation, Imagination, Reasoning, Judgment, and Memory, as well as Presentation.
