Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad In presenting to the public this brief historical sketch and compendium of facts relating to the diversified career of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company, - from the period of its first organization in 1827, to its completion in 1853, - the author has been influenced solely by a desire to place on record a comprehensive narrative of events, redounding to the honor of the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore, and reflecting immortal credit upon the intelligence, perseverance, and unflagging energy of those alike who originated, perfected, and have carried to a successful issue this great national enterprise. Maryland has the honor of having been the first State in the Union to incorporate a Company for the construction of a Rail Road, - she was also the first to devote the public resources to the support of the system, - "a system that has given to the people of the United States, an identity of feeling, a harmony of interests, and a facility of social intercourse which has bound them together as one great family." Maryland may now also boast of having completed one of the longest and most magnificent Rail Roads in the world, and although more limited in her territory than many of her sister States, she has thus secured the most direct channel through which the interchange of commodities and travel, between the Eastern and the Western States, will be mainly carried on, and which will elevate her chief City still higher in wealth, commercial activity, and national importance. Two years later the B&O's National Limited linked the nations capital to St. Louis. Almost at once the two lines became household names, famous for the outstanding service and cuisine offered in their Pullman sleepers and renowned dining cars. This authoritative, illustrated history takes readers back to the B&O's glory years, with a wealth of images, route information, details of the trains passenger motive power, and the inside story on the frugal railroads means of streamlining its equipment with innovative and aesthetically striking results. Against a backdrop of dozens of black-and-white archival images and period color photos depicting uniforms, dinnerware, stations, period ads and route maps, and interior views of passenger cars, award-winning rail author Joe Welsh discusses how B&O passenger operations led to the demise of at least one of its rival Pennsylvania Railroads passenger trains; and how, ultimately, market forces did in the B&O's passenger trains as well. Here is the whole story, with the National Limited's failure under Amtrak's auspices--and the 1981 rebirth of the Capitol Limited as one of Amtrak's most popular trains, keeping a legend alive.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic History of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad: 1827-1853 The monograph has been designed 'as a study in the economics of transportation, and stress has been laid upon the in uence of the railroad in the development of the industry and commerce of the city of Baltimore, and of the agricultural, mineral and manufacturing resources of the state Of Maryland. The Baltimore and Ohio having been the first great through-route railroad projected in America, has naturally an important place in the regard of the student of transportation. The beginnings of some of' the present difficult railroad problems appear in the history of this road, and these have not only been treated incidentally as they appeared in connection with the legislative, financial and 'mechanical history of the railroad, but have been summar ized in the final chapter. The hearty thanks of the writer are due Prof. Sidney Sherwood and Dr. J. H. Hollander of the Johns Hopkins University for their valuable aid in the preparation of this monograph. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the construction of railroads in West Virginia, largely to access the untouched stands of timber in such counties as Upshur, Webster, Nicholas, and Randolph. Johnson Newlon Camden and Henry Gassaway Davis were the two men that were the driving forces behind these railroads. They were industrialists and politicians as well as friends and rivals. Camden built the Clarksburg, Weston and Glenville Railroad connecting Clarksburg and Weston in north central West Virginia. Completed in 1879, it was extended to Buckhannon in the fall of 1883. The West Virginia and Pittsburgh Railroad soon built extensions from Weston to the Gauley River and south from Buckhannon. Davis started construction of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway in 1880, which followed the North Branch of the Potomac River south into Tucker and Randolph Counties. Sawmills and towns sprang up all along the railroads as vast quantities of lumber were harvested from the forests of West Virginia. As the forests were denuded, mines opened, more towns were built, and coal replaced lumber as the principal freight. While sections of the W. Va. & Pittsburgh have been abandoned, the present day successor to the B. & O. still hauls coal along these rail lines to the voracious power plants of the eastern United States. Author and railroad scholar Alan Clarke has once again offered an in-depth look at the building of railroads in West Virginia in the late nineteenth century. Much of the technical and historical information in the book will be of special interest to railroad buffs. However, Clarke's grasp of the state at that time in history, as well as the book's vintage photographs, maps, and illustrations, cause this book to appeal to anyone interested in the history of the Mountain State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1827, a group of Baltimore capitalists feared their city would be left out of the lucrative East Coast-to-Midwest trade that other eastern cities were developing; thus, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered. Political pressure kept the B&O out of Pennsylvania at first, and so track crews headed for what is now West Virginia, building mountainous routes with torturous grades to Wheeling and Parkersburg. Eventually the B&O financed and acquired a spiderweb of branch lines that covered much of the northern and central parts of the Mountain State. This book takes a close look at the line's locomotives, passenger and freight trains, structures, and, most importantly, its people who endeared their company to generations of travelers, shippers, and small Appalachian communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of several centuries, Baltimore evolved from a Colonial-era port city to a thriving and dynamic city of nearly a million people at the conclusion of World War II As the city grew, a wide variety of industries were established. Railroads, ports, manufacturing sites, and public infrastructure, such as power plants, fundamentally transformed large swaths of Baltimore's landscape. However, the second half of the 20th century saw a dramatic and often traumatic restructuring of the city's economy; individual businesses and entire industrial sectors downsized, relocated, or completely collapsed. Today many such areas of Baltimore have changed radically as abandoned manufacturing sites have been demolished or converted to new uses. Images of America: Industrial Baltimore documents a vital component of the city's working past through historic photographs of the people and sites that made the city an essential economic engine of the Industrial Revolution.
