Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar With a Praxis on Select Portions of Genesis and the Psalms The Arabic is very rich in words and forms the Syriac, so far as it is yet known, is comparatively limited in both; the Hebrew holds a middle place between them, both as to-copiousness of words and Variety of forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar With a Copious Syntax and Praxis But the most important work, which has ever appeared on this subject, is the larger Hebrew Grammar of Gesenius, Professor of Theology at Halle, published in 1817, and containing about 900 pages. In this work, the whole in terior of Hebrew Grammar has received a new arrange ment, and a multitude of dark places been illuminated. The publication of it has made a new era in this department; and it leaves but little to expect from further improvement, except in some of the' details which minute observation may correct, and some arrangements of matter which may be rendered more conspicuous. Something in both of these respects has been attempted in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar: With Exercises Selected From the Bible One of the chief characteristics of the work is the Exercises, which are intended to impress the grammatical rules on the mind of the student. To form these Exercises sentences have been selected from the Hebrew Scriptures, as the oldest and purest form in which the language has survived, chapter and verse being given in the foot-notes. The book is therefore calculated to impart not only the grammar, but also a considerable knowledge of Biblical idiom. In the English Exercises the order of the Hebrew sentence has been retained, as far as possible thus facili tating re-translation. The student is advised, after having made his own version, to compare it with the original passage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hebrew Language The remarks upon the consecution of poetic accents were in type before the appearance of the able discussion of that subject by Baer, in an appendix to the Commentary of Delitzsch upon the Psalms; The rules of Baer, however, depend for their justification upon the assumption of the accurate accentuation of his own recent edition of the He brew Psalter, which departs in numerous instances from the current editions as they do in fact from one another. Inas much as this is a question which can only be settled by manuscripts that are not accessible in this country, it seems best to wait until it has been tested and pronounced upon by those who are capable of doing so. What has here been written on that subject, has accordingly been suffered to re main, imperfect and unsatisfactory as it is. The laws which regulate the formation of nouns have been derived from Ewald, with a few modifications chiefly tending to simplify them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hebrew Language of the Old Testament Grammar especially has derived great advantage from this enlargement Of our view of language. It has received the new honour of being waited on by philosophy, and has been raised to the rank of a science. It is now no longer enough for a Grammar to contain a mere collection Of the pheno mena of a language as to its forms and syntax; but it must show how the forms' have arived at their present state; it must endeavour to attain a correct feeling of the sense which every word has on account of its form; it must trace how time and the fortune of the nation have modified its native type; and lastly, must show how all its Syntactical peculiari ties are founded on the laws of thought, and that there is nothing arbitrary or accidental in them, but that every language is in harmony with itself, and, like every plant or animal, acknowledges its conformity to certain eternal laws, even in its departure from the particular organization and laws of others. Less than this will not satisfy the demands of our age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this I have adopted, not without hesitation, the views of Sievers. I find it, however, quite impossible to follow him in rejecting all distinctions OT quantity in the vowels. It is no doubt possible that such matters may in the spoken language have worn a very different appearance, and especially that in the period of nearly a thousand years, over which the Old Testament writings extend, very great variations may have taken place. Our duty, however, is to represent the language in the form in which it has been handed down to us by the Masoretes; and that this form involves a dis tinction between unchangeable, tone-long, and short vowels, admits in my Opinion of no doubt. The discussion of any earlier stage of development belongs not to Hebrew grammar but to comparative Semitic philology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Introductory Hebrew Grammar This Grammar differs from other primary Hebrew Grammars chiefly in two respects: its compactness of form attained, it is believed, without loss of important matter and the facilities it offers for acquiring, during the study of the grammatical principles, a choice Hebrew vocabulary. All words used in the Hebrew Bible over fifty times, the most of those used between twenty-five and fifty times, and not a few of those, of connected roots, used less than twenty-five times are here found, and they are the only Hebrew words employed in the book. Seven hundred of them are made use of in Parts 1 and 2, and three hundred in the additional Exercises (pp. 123-130). It is, of course, to be expected that the student will make special effort to memorize these words as they occur; but the process, it is confidently hoped, will be greatly facilitated by the structure of the Grammar itself.1. The words are arranged in the several Vocabularies under their respective root-forms. 2.They are very generally accompanied by notes and mnemonics for the purpose of calling special attention to them and fixing them in mind.3. They are used in the illustrations of principles; in the various tables of inflected forms; and, all of them, in the Exercises for translation.4. Attention is repeatedly called to them by a careful system of cross references.5 An alphabetical list is given (pp. 118-120)to serve as a test of the students acquaintance with the Vocabularies already gone over, as well as for general reference.6. The Exercises for translating Hebrew into English are purposely placed apart from the Vocabularies in order to encourage independence of them.7. And, finally, in Ap.ii. (A) about six hundred of the words are associated together in the form of synonyms; and (B)three hundred of similar form or sound are discriminated from one another. Among many advantages of this method, it has been found that, without any considerable increase of the time required to master the principles of the Grammar, the student, while so engaged, has also made a fair beginning in the much neglected departments of Hebrew etymology and synonomy; and, still better, acquired a vocabulary sufficient to enable him to read at sight in the historical books of the Bible. The use of mnemonics is simply incidental to the general plan; but, far-fetched and even ridiculous as some of the suggestions are acknowledged to be, they have proved, after an experience of some years, very effective for their purpose. The only other systematic attempt of the kind with which I am acquainted is that of Stier (Hebraisches Vocabularium, Leipz., 1871), who, however, used the system to a very limited extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hebrew Grammar As in many respects this grammar differs from other grammars, the plan which has been adopted requires a few explanations. Although modern works on Hebrew Grammar have been consulted by me, I did not think it advisable blindly to follow them. Experience has taught me that this would be far from prudent. The greatest scholars sometimes venture to create rules which have no sufiicient basis and even to quote examples which only exist in their imagination. Most curious instances of this could be given. But for what purpose? In spite of a few inaccuracies they remain men who by reason of their learning and hard work are entitled to our respect. I merely wish, therefore, to point out in few words in what particulars this manual follows a more or less independent course, and the motives which have induced me to do so.
