Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have seen unprecedented levels of growth during the last decade in both military and civilian domains. It is anticipated that civilian applications will be dominant in the future, although there are still barriers to be overcome and technical challenges to be met. Integrating UAS into, for example, civilian space, navigation, autonomy, see-detect-and-avoid systems, smart designs, system integration, vision-based navigation and training, to name but a few areas, will be of prime importance in the near future. This special volume is the outcome of research presented at the International Symposium on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, held in Orlando, Florida, USA, from June 23-25, 2008, and presents state-of-the-art findings on topics such as: UAS operations and integration into the national airspace system; UAS navigation and control; micro-, mini-, small UAVs; UAS simulation testbeds and frameworks; UAS research platforms and applications; UAS applications. This book aims at serving as a guide tool on UAS for engineers and practitioners, academics, government agencies and industry. Previously published in the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems, 54 (1-3, 2009).

Book excerpt: Modern computing advances allow the aerospace controls engineer the ability to design, test, and implement automatic control systems for air vehicles with breath taking speed and accuracy. This work examines the automation of the hardware-in-the-loop testing and implementation of autonomous controllers for Unmanned Air Vehicles. Extraordinary interest is generated in this subject considering automation results in hardware-in-the-loop testing within days of completing a controller design. The entire automation process is presented, from design of the controller to implementation on a particular control platform to hardware-in-the-loop testing of the controller. This accomplishes control design and implementation in a matter of months compared to a few years or more before automation.

This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, signi?cant changes have occurred in the ?eld of vehicle motion planning, and for UAVs in particular. UAV motion planning is especially dif?cult due to several complexities not considered by earlier planning strategies: the - creased importance of differential constraints, atmospheric turbulence which makes it impossible to follow a pre-computed plan precisely, uncertainty in the vehicle state, and limited knowledge about the environment due to limited sensor capabilities. These differences have motivated the increased use of feedback and other control engineering techniques for motion planning. The lack of exact algorithms for these problems and dif?culty inherent in characterizing approximation algorithms makes it impractical to determine algorithm time complexity, completeness, and even soundness. This gap has not yet been addressed by statistical characterization of experimental performance of algorithms and benchmarking. Because of this overall lack of knowledge, it is dif?cult to design a guidance system, let alone choose the algorithm. Throughout this paper we keep in mind some of the general characteristics and requirements pertaining to UAVs. A UAV is typically modeled as having velocity and acceleration constraints (and potentially the higher-order differential constraints associated with the equations of motion), and the objective is to guide the vehicle towards a goal through an obstacle ?eld. A UAV guidance problem is typically characterized by a three-dimensional problem space, limited information about the environment, on-board sensors with limited range, speed and acceleration constraints, and uncertainty in vehicle state and sensor data.

Book excerpt: This report documents research performed under the contract entitled "A Hardware In-the-Loop Experiment and Simulation Facility for Vision-Based Control of Micro-Air-Vehicles (MAVs)." This experimental facility is comprised of two major components - a wind tunnel facility and a real-time virtual image generation system. Collectively, these two components form a unique closed-loop test for studying vision-based control of autonomous flight vehicles. The most important milestone achieved last year was the design and construction of the new visualization laboratory. This laboratory is equipped to display virtual environments for MAV flight simulations. Currently, a University of Florida campus database, developed by the UF Digital Worlds Institute, is being used as the virtual environment for studying vision-based control of MAVs in urban environments. This report provides a description of the new visualization laboratory and the virtual UF campus database.

In particular, it covers a previously neglected topic, namely the search for the best pathway and landing site. It describes the system’s components, such as the ultrasonic sensor, infrared sensor and optical sensor, in detail, and discusses the experimental tests carried out in both controlled laboratory and real-world environments. Providing a fascinating survey of the state of the art in the field of unmanned aircraft system electronics design and development, the book also presents recent advances in and cutting-edge methodologies for the development of acquisition systems and inexpensive sensor design for navigation data.

Book excerpt: These annotated Final Review charts summarize the work performed for the Open Control Platform (OCP) Software Enabled Control (SEC) Hardware in the Loop (HITL) Delivery Order #0008 under the Air Vehicles Technology Integration Program (AVTIP) contract awarded to Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC). The OCP HITL program developed a Hardware-in-the Loop facility for demonstrating and evaluating High-Confidence Software and Systems (HCSS). Boeing, AFRL, and NGC created and implemented an architecture that provided AFRL/VAC with the baseline capability to test control algorithms (including collision avoidance and Fault Detection Isolation), run combined piloted and autonomous vehicle simulations, and created an interface to AFRL visualization software Virtual Battlefield Management System (VBMS) and SubrScene.

Book excerpt: Prior to 2012, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technology had been primarily used by the military and hobbyists, but it has more recently transitioned to broader application, including commercial and scientific applications, as well as to expanded military use. These new uses encroach on existing structures for managing the nation's airspace and present significant challenges to ensure that UASs are coordinated safely and suitably with existing manned aircraft and air traffic management systems, particularly with the National Airspace System (NAS). Of particular concern is the interaction between human pilots, operators, or controllers and increasingly automated systems. Enhanced understanding of these interactions is essential to avoid unintended consequences, especially as new technologies emerge. In order to explore these issues, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a 2-day workshop in January 2018. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) researchers at the Aerospace Vehicle Technology Assessment and Simulation (AVTAS) Laboratory are currently conducting the Open Control Platform (OCP) Hardware-In-The-Loop (HITL) project sponsored by the DARPA Software Enabled Control (SEC) Program. The purpose of this project is to develop the capability to be an OCP test-bed and to evaluate the OCP controls and simulation environment for a specific test case. The OCP provides an open, middleware-enabled software framework and development platform for developers of distributed and embedded software applications. The middleware isolates the programmer from the details of the operating system and provides a mechanism for communication with other OCP software components. A Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) was chosen as a representative flight controls application to exercise OCP. The programmatic approach taken by the OCP-HITL project is a series of simulation experiments with increasing complexity.

Book excerpt: The makerspace movement is as nascent and revolutionary as the technology behind unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and this volume introduces readers to both fascinating worlds. UAVs are no longer science fiction. Though their surveillance capabilities are controversial, they’re also being used for more practical purposes. This volume teaches young people how members of the maker movement are producing their own UAVs for productive purposes. Readers learn just what makerspaces are and where to find one in their own community, hopefully piquing their interest in engineering careers.
