Book Synopsis Peat Swamp Forests : Integrated Framework for Assessment and Management by : Shamsudin Ibrahim
Download or read book Peat Swamp Forests : Integrated Framework for Assessment and Management written by Shamsudin Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current extent and distribution of peat swamp in Peninsular Malaysia was discussed in the paper. Since most of the remaining undisturbed peat swamps in Peninsular Malaysia are under forest cover, the paper briefly discussed a forest structure and tree species composition in primary peat swamp forest in Peninsular Malaysia with emphasis on commercial timber species. Most of these areas are in deep peat with little options for other land uses. Those areas on shallow peat have been extensively reclaimed for agriculture. Currently, more areas on deep peat have also been developed for various land uses and triggered a major concern not only to the scientific community but also to the general public. As a result the extent of deep peat under forest declined rapidly in the last decade.

Book Synopsis The Forests Handbook, Volume 2 by : Julian Evans
Download or read book The Forests Handbook, Volume 2 written by Julian Evans and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-03-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the world's forests is at the forefront of environmental debate. Rising concerns over the effects of deforestation and climate change are highlighting the need both to conserve and manage existing forests and woodland through sustainable forestry practices. The Forests Handbook, written by an international team of both scientists and practitioners, presents an integrated approach to forests and forestry, applying our present understanding of forest science to management practices, as a basis for achieving sustainability. Volume One presents an overview of the world's forests; their locations and what they are like, the science of how they operate as complex ecosystems and how they interact with their environment. Volume Two applies this science to reality; it focuses on forestry interventions and their impact, the principles governing how to protect forests and on how we can better harness the enormous benefits forests offer. Case studies are drawn from several different countries and are used to illustrate the key points. Development specialists, forest managers and those involved with land and land-use will find this handbook a valuable and comprehensive overview of forest science and forestry practice. Researchers and students of forestry, biology, ecology and geography will find it equally accessible and useful.

Book Synopsis Tropical Peatland Ecosystems by : Mitsuru Osaki
Download or read book Tropical Peatland Ecosystems written by Mitsuru Osaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an excellent resource for scientists, political decision makers, and students interested in the impact of peatlands on climate change and ecosystem function, containing a plethora of recent research results such as monitoring-sensing-modeling for carbon–water flux/storage, biodiversity and peatland management in tropical regions. It is estimated that more than 23 million hectares (62 %) of the total global tropical peatland area are located in Southeast Asia, in lowland or coastal areas of East Sumatra, Kalimantan, West Papua, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Southeast Thailand. Tropical peatland has a vital carbon–water storage function and is host to a huge diversity of plant and animal species. Peatland ecosystems are extremely vulnerable to climate change and the impacts of human activities such as logging, drainage and conversion to agricultural land. In Southeast Asia, severe episodic droughts associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, in combination with over-drainage, forest degradation, and land-use changes, have caused widespread peatland fires and microbial peat oxidation. Indonesia's 20 Mha peatland area is estimated to include about 45–55 GtC of carbon stocks. As a result of land use and development, Indonesia is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases (2–3 Gtons carbon dioxide equivalent per year), 80 % of which is due to deforestation and peatland loss. Thus, tropical peatlands are key ecosystems in terms of the carbon–water cycle and climate change.
