Book Synopsis Veerashaivism (Virasaivism): Scripture, Philosophy, Religious Practice, and Other Aspects by : Linga Raju
Download or read book Veerashaivism (Virasaivism): Scripture, Philosophy, Religious Practice, and Other Aspects written by Linga Raju and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veerashaiva philosophy and practices existed prior to the reformation by the twelfth century Philosophers. The present day Veerashaivas are the followers of the philosophy and practices put forward by those Philosophers. In the twelfth century of Common Era, religion itself had deteriorated into another means of exploitation, perpetuating social inequality and ignorance of spiritual truth. Basavanna plunged into a movement to reform Veerashaivism from within. His efforts were mostly oriented in two directions - religion and society - and perhaps towards a closer approximation of the two. He saw no difference between rich and poor, and between man and woman; he saw no difference among different castes; and he embedded this principle of equality among all in the religion. He established an academy called Anubhava Mantapa where a large number of philosophers, mystics, scholars and seekers coming from all parts of the Indian subcontinent, would gather to participate in learned discussions on the highest ends of life. The philosophy and practices of this new religious faith have been documented in the vachanas. The vachana literature of Basavanna and his contemporary philosophers is the basic scripture. In the 15th century Veerashaiva scholars systematically collected the retrievable portions of the vachana literature, and compiled some of these vachanas into the form of a scripture known as Shunya Sampadane. The discourses at the Anubhava Mantapa that are narrated in the Shunya Sampadane have been incorporated into some of the articles in this book. These discourses, I believe, will give finer details of the philosophical aspects of Veerashaivism. Also the articles in this book have been presented in some sort of an order - Scripture, Philosophy, Practice, and other aspects of Veerashaivism. This type of presentation of the updated concepts of Veerashaivism, I believe, will enhance readability of this book.

Book Synopsis The Sufis of Bijapur, 1300-1700 by : Richard Maxwell Eaton
Download or read book The Sufis of Bijapur, 1300-1700 written by Richard Maxwell Eaton and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sufis were heirs to a tradition of Islamic mysticism, and they have generally been viewed as standing more or less apart from the social order. Professor Eaton contends to the contrary that the Sufis were an integral part of their society, and that an understanding of their interaction with it is essential to an understanding of the Sufis themselves. In investigating the Sufis of Bijapur in South India, (he author identifies three fundamental questions. What was the relationship, he asks, between the Sufis and Bijapur's 'ulama, the upholders of Islamic orthodoxy? Second, how did the Sufis relate to the Bijapur court? Finally, how did they interact with the non-Muslim population surrounding them, and how did they translate highly developed mystical traditions into terms meaningful to that population? In answering these questions, the author advances our knowledge of an important but little-studied city-state in medieval India. Originally published in 1978. Book Synopsis Modern Hinduism in Text and Context by : Lavanya Vemsani
Download or read book Modern Hinduism in Text and Context written by Lavanya Vemsani and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Hinduism in Text and Context brings together textual and contextual approaches to provide a holistic understanding of modern Hinduism. It examines new sources - including regional Saiva texts, Odissi dance and biographies of Nationalists - and discusses topics such as yoga, dance, visual art and festivals in tandem with questions of spirituality and ritual. The book addresses themes and issues yet to receive in-depth attention in the study of Hinduism. It shows that Hinduism endures not only in texts, but also in the context of festivals and devotion, and that contemporary practice, devotional literature, creative traditions and ethics inform the intricacies of a religion in context. Lavanya Vemsani draws on social scientific methodologies as well as history, ethnography and textual analysis, demonstrating that they are all part of the toolkit for understanding the larger framework of religion in the context of emerging nationhood, transnational and transcultural interactions.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Hinduism by : Denise Cush
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hinduism written by Denise Cush and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Hinduism contains over 900 entries reflecting recent advances in scholarship which have raised new theoretical and methodological issues as well as identifying new areas of study which have not been addressed previously. The debate over the term 'Hinduism' in the light of post-Orientalist critiques is just one example of how once standard academic frameworks have been called into question. Entries range from 150-word definitions of terms and concepts to 5,000-word in-depth investigations of major topics. The Encyclopedia covers all aspects of Hinduism but departs from other works in including more ethnographic and contemporary material in contrast to an exclusively textual and historical approach. It includes a broad range of subject matter such as: historical developments (among them nineteenth and twentieth century reform and revival); geographical distribution (especially the diaspora); major and minor movements; philosophies and theologies; scriptures; deities; temples and sacred sites; pilgrimages; festivals; rites of passage; worship; religious arts (sculpture, architecture, music, dance, etc.); religious sciences (e.g. astrology); biographies of leading figures; local and regional traditions; caste and untouchability; feminism and women's religion; nationalism and the Hindu radical right; and new religious movements. The history of study and the role of important scholars past and present are also discussed. Accessibility to all levels of reader has been a priority and no previous knowledge is assumed. However, the in-depth larger entries and the design of the work in line with the latest scholarly advances means that the volume will be of considerable interest to specialists. The whole is cross-referenced and bibliographies attach to the larger entries. There is a full index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book throws new light on the gradual development of the concept of Rudra-Siva in his animal, phallic and human forms, since the days of the Harappa Civilization. It examines how Siva, the composite Aryan-non-Aryan Divinity, was not only admitted but was ultimately crowned with an exalted position in the Brahmanical pantheon; how the bull once identified with the deity, was regulated to the position of a vahana; how phallism was related to Saivism and also how Siva, in his different forms, was represented in early Indian Art and the Art of Further India. The wide range and depth of the author's research fills a vital gap in the subject and his treatment of the entire subject is unique. This methodical study on Siva also contains an exhaustive bibliography.
