Book excerpt: Readings in Urban Sociology covers the specialized aspect of sociology, together with an introduction designed to relate the selected Readings to the state of sociological knowledge and research in the field in question. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 12 chapters, and begins with an overview of the study of urbanization and urban sociology. The opening part describes the nature of industrial urbanism in Great Britain. This part deals with the development of British urban sociology and the idea of neighborhood community. The next part examines the distinction between ways of life in the modern city and the modern suburb. This part also looks into the context of urbanization involving population dispersal and diffusion. The closing parts provide an analysis of the urban system in terms of a conflict model and demonstrate the development of Prague's ecological structure. These parts also discuss the notion of a rural-urban continuum and the process of adjustment to an urban system in Africa. This book will prove useful to sociologists and researchers.

Book Synopsis Authority and Delinquency in the Modern State by : Alex Comfort
Download or read book Authority and Delinquency in the Modern State written by Alex Comfort and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Authority and Delinquency in the Modern State, originally published in 1950, Alex Comfort discusses the relationship between crime and power, and traces the mechanisms which may lead to delinquent behaviour by those in office. In the early twentieth century, the literature of abnormal behaviour contained many hints of identity between the psychogenesis of crime and the psychogenesis of political power, and with the recognition of “war crimes”, and the possible criminality of governments, these hints had been brought into the open. His conclusions presented a serious challenge to the traditional conception of Democracy and of the State at the time. He discusses the forces in democratic society which tend to select potential delinquents as candidates for Parliament and for office, or which may operate to produce delinquency in those who obtain power. Dr Comfort, a Lecturer in Physiology at the London Hospital at the time of publication, obtained his psychological training in child welfare work, but was better known as a novelist and poet. This book was a contribution to the theoretical background of political anarchism which hoped to provoke serious and lively discussion among students of politics and of social psychology at the time.

Book excerpt: Is the Middle East "the mother of all conflicts"? This volume, consisting of essays published over a space of twenty-five years but extensively rewritten and updated, probes into the forever problematic relationship between the Middle East and Western Europe, between a revitalizing Islamic and a post-Christian civilization. It treats, firstly, the dynamics of the Middle Eastern civilization, building up a kaleidoscopic picture of the Middle Eastern perception of change and development; modern science in a non-Western context; the ambiguity of westernization in Middle Eastern revitalization; politico-religious resurgence; the matter of means and ends. The second part concentrates on the intercultural relations between the Middle East and Europe, while the third part considers implications for oriental and development studies: the new demands arising and the perceptual and methodological retooling needed to meet them. In singling out the intercultural nature of events and clashes, this important volume advances an innovative, interactive style of scholarship.
