Book Synopsis Revolution Principles by : J. P. Kenyon
Download or read book Revolution Principles written by J. P. Kenyon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-07-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from 1680 to about 1720 was one of the most complex and difficult in the history of British politics, to contemporaries as well as to posterity. The parameters of political obligation were decisively shifted by the Revolution of 1688; statesmen and politicians had now to accustom themselves to the novelty of a parliament in session every year; Britain was almost continuously engaged in the most ambitious and expensive wars in her history to date; political parties were slow to form, and of doubtful repute when they did. Professor Kenyon's Ford Lectures, delivered in Oxford in 1976 and now published as a paperback for the first time, remain a standard account of the period. For this reissue, Professor Kenyon has written a new preface which discusses the book in the light of recent historiography.

The pastors of Magdeburg issued their Confession and Defense of the Pastors and Other Ministers of the Church of Magdeburg on April 13, 1550 AD. Five months after issuing their Confession, Charles V's forces marched on Magdeburg. The people of Magdeburg burned everything outside the city walls and closed the city gates. The siege of Magdeburg had begun."--Cover, page 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative religious insights into the meaning of vocation in today's world The concept of "vocation" or "calling" is a distinctively Christian concern, grounded in the long-held belief that we find our meaning, purpose, and fulfillment in God. But what about religions other than Christianity? What does it mean for someone from another faith tradition to understand calling or vocation? In this book contributors with expertise in Catholic and Protestant Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism, and secular humanism explore the idea of calling from these eight faith perspectives. The contributors search their respective traditions' sacred texts, key figures, practices, and concepts for wisdom on the meaning of vocation. Greater understanding of diverse faith traditions, say Kathleen Cahalan and Douglas Schuurman, will hopefully increase and improve efforts to build a better, more humane world. CONTRIBUTORS Mark Berkson (Confucianism and Daoism) Kathleen A. Cahalan (Catholicism) Amy Eilberg (Judaism) John Kelsay (Islam) Edward Langerak (Secularism) Anantanand Rambachan (Hinduism) Douglas J. Schuurman (Protestantism) Mark Unno (Buddhism)

Book Synopsis “Recalculating” Marriage by : Edward W. Kaleefey BA MDiv
Download or read book “Recalculating” Marriage written by Edward W. Kaleefey BA MDiv and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God’s original design for marriage is under attack. Activists have used the media, political correctness, and the courts to advance LGBT and same-sex marriage agendas. In 2015, the United States Supreme Court granted the right to same-sex marriage. To help redirect the immoral trends, Christians must know God’s original design for marriage and vote their conscience. In “Recalculating” Marriage, author Edward W. Kaleefey explores the need for an infallible moral authority regarding marriage and related issues— such as arranged marriages, celibacy, monogamy and polygamy, divorce and remarriage, and same-sex marriage—Kaleefey shows how same-sex marriage is neither rational, logical, nor moral. Thus, Christians should stop supporting sexual immorality, stand for sexual purity in marriage, and start reshaping society’s view of marriage according to God’s will. “Recalculating” Marriage emphasizes the objective, infallible authority of God’s Word, and it provides a timely and comprehensive treatment of marriage and related issues of sexuality and human relationships. Believers will be informed, challenged, and importantly, motivated to express biblically based convictions in the market place and at the ballot box.

Book Synopsis Dear Dr. Spock by : Michael S. Foley
Download or read book Dear Dr. Spock written by Michael S. Foley and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the Vietnam War, thousands of Americans wrote moving letters to Dr. Benjamin Spock, America’s pediatrician and a high-profile opponent of the war. Personal and heartfelt, thoughtful and volatile, these missives from Middle America provide an intriguing glimpse into the conflicts that took place over the dinner table as people wrestled with this divisive war and with their consciences. Providing one of the first clear views of the home front during the war, Dear Dr. Spock collects the best of these letters and offers a window into the minds of ordinary Americans. They wrote to Spock because he was familiar, trustworthy, and controversial. His book Baby and Child Care was on the shelves of most homes, second only to the Bible in the number of copies sold. Starting in the 1960s, his activism in the antinuclear and antiwar movements drew mixed reactions from Americans—some puzzled, some supportive, some angry, and some desperate. Most of the letters come from what Richard Nixon called the “silent majority”—white, middleclass, law-abiding citizens who the president thought supported the war to contain Communism. In fact, the letters reveal a complexity of reasoning and feeling that moves far beyond the opinion polls at the time. One mother of young children struggles to imagine how Vietnamese women could endure after their village was napalmed, while another chastises Spock for the “dark shadow” he had cast on the country and pledges to instill love of country in her sons. What emerges is a portrait of articulate Americans struggling mightily to understand government policies in Vietnam and how those policies did or did not reflect their own sense of themselves and their country.
