Young persons are incapable of distinguishing between important and unimportant historical facts. It is therefore the teacher's duty so to direct the student's work that his energies may be employed upon those things that are most worthy of his attention. It is plain that the topical method of teaching history is best adapted to this end; but when this method is adopted, a supplementary work containing the topics is needed. But even after the pupil has an important topic assigned, he may, through misdirected effort, waste much time in considering it. For the purpose of offering him some assistance, the topics in the first part of this book are subdivided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution of the United States is a political study written by James M. Beck. Beck was an American lawyer, political figure, and writer. Provided here is a study of the formulation of and the political philosophy embedded within the US constitution. Excerpt: "In my last address I left Doctor Franklin predicting to the discouraged remnant of the constitutional convention that the nation then formed would be a "rising sun" in the constellation of the nations. The sun, however, was destined to rise through a bank of dark and murky clouds, for the Constitution could not take effect until it was ratified by nine of the thirteen States; and when it was submitted to the people, who selected State conventions for the purpose of ratifying or rejecting the proposed plan of government, a bitter controversy at once ensued between two political parties, then in process of formation, one called the Constitution ratified without controversy. In the remaining ten the struggle was long and arduous, and nearly a year passed before the requisite nine States gave their assent. Two of the States refused to become parts of the new nation, even after it began, and three years passed before the thirteen States were re-united under the Constitution. It could not have been ratified had there not been an assurance that there would be immediate amendments to provide a Bill of Rights to safeguard the individual. Thus came into existence the first ten amendments to the Constitution, with their perpetual guaranty of the fundamental rights of religion, freedom of speech and of the Press, the right of assemblage, the immunity from unreasonable searches and seizures, the right of trial by jury, and similar guarantees of fundamental individual rights."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the Constitutional History of the United States This work is designed to be a beginning book for students, or general readers, who desire to learn some thing of the character and history of the Constitution of the United States. It is an elementary account of government in the United States. It gives a brief state ment of the main facts of our constitutional history but it does not profess to be a constitutional history in the full meaning of the term. For the general reader or for high-school use it prob ably covers sufficient ground. For the college student it attempts simply to point the way to extended study by a brief but connected review of the main facts, showing what is of chief importance for further study, and embracing those political documents which every student of our history must thoroughly understand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitutional History of the United States Important additions have been made to the original Constitution by way of amendment, but scarcely more so than those which have come to it through the process of the gradual unfolding of its unexpressed meaning, which has naturally followed the expansion of our national domain, the development of our national re sources, the meeting of new responsibilities in govern ment, the contending with new difficulties which have confronted us in the execution of our newly acquired powers. While we have a wmtten, and therefore, in a' certain sense, a settled Constitution, it is an elastic one. Had the original Constitution of 1787 been so limited by its own terms that it could not have been construed to mean more than was actually and clearly expressed by the language in which it was clothed, our Government would soon have gone to wreck or have remained a feeble and insignificant member of the sisterhood of nations, unless by amendment of the old, or by the adoption of a new constitution new power had been given it. Fortunately it was not so framed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional History and Government of the United States IN this edition some of the chapters have been rewritten and the others have been carefully revised. The conditions and circumstances which favored the institution of self-government in the colonies have received more attention. Care has been taken, however, to limit the narrative portions of the work to the collocation of such facts as serve to show the course of our constitutional system in its beginnings, growth, and development. Many notes have been added, a considerable number of them illustrative of the objections and spirit of opposition which the practical development of the system has encountered. The la bors of the Supreme Court in giving a sensible and practicable construction to the Constitution are constant, and some account of the most important since the earlier edition has been added. Recent important events at home and. Abroad involving or pro mising to involve the scope of constitutional powers have received attention.
