Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the west coast port city of Gothenburg, Sweden, the architect Gunnar Asplund built a modest extension to an old courthouse on the main square (1934–36). Judged today to be one of the finest works of modern architecture, the courthouse extension was immediately the object of a negative newspaper campaign led by one of the most noted editors of the day, Torgny Segerstedt. Famous for his determined opposition to National Socialism, he also took a principled stand against the undermining of urban tradition in Gothenburg. Gothenburg’s problems with modern public architecture, though clamorous and publicized throughout Sweden, were by no means unique. In Gunnar Asplund’s Gothenburg, Nicholas Adams places Asplund’s building in the wider context of public architecture between the wars, setting the originality and sensitivity of Asplund’s conception against the political and architectural struggles of the 1930s. Today, looking at the building in the broadest of contexts, we can appreciate the richness of this exquisite work of architecture. This book recaptures the complex magic of its creation and the fascinating controversy of its completed form.

Book excerpt: The spectacularly beautiful Swedish countryside, characterized by sweeping coastline, sheltering forest, and historic township, is the setting for the equally spectacular tradition of Swedish residential architecture. The numerous historic domiciles in all regions of the country are priceless records of bygone building styles and skilled artisanship. Magnificent castles, simple cottages, stately manors, rustic farmhouses, even seaside bathing huts and military residences: all are shown in this volume with exquisite photographs and detailed architectural and historical information. Among the buildings shown are Souml;rby mansion, with its intact eighteenth-century painted-linen wall coverings; the numerous residences of the De la Gardie family, including Lauml;ckouml; Castle, founded as a bishop's stronghold in the thirteenth century; Gunnebo, a lavish wooden interpretation of an Italian villa built for wealthy merchant John Hall; and several buildings associated with the great Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus: Raring;shult, his childhood home; Sveden, the site of his wedding; and Hammarby, his adult home, complete with study, lecture pulpit, and collection cabinet. A celebration of a centuries-old design history as well as a source of design inspiration,The Swedish Housecaptures the special qualities of a unique building practice.

Book excerpt: Swedish Modernism provides an in-depth, multilayered account of the process of modernization; whilst also highlighting the difficulties found. The debate is enriched from a diverse range of contributors including architects, researchers and leading academics from across the globe. Following an introduction from Helena Mattsson and Sven-Olov Wallenstein, the book is divided thematically into three sections. The first section of the book explores the construction of the welfare state. The contributions in this section analyze the peculiar modalities of this development from the point of view of sociology and political science, providing a more nuanced view of 'modernization' that shows to what extent it must always be understood on the basis of local context. The second section delves into the importance of consumers and spectacles analyzed in relation to the wide range of 'state programmes' from housing to national marketing programmes. This section includes case studies highlighting the importance of consumption for the formation of subjectivity, both in the pre-and post-war period, and range from analyzes of exhibition architectures and debated on standardization to the Co-Op movement and the gendering of taste. One of the contributors looks, for example, at the exhibition Modern Leisure, 1936, and explores how exhibitions were highly instrumental in the formation of the Swedish welfare state. Another contributor looks at how strategies of consumption are formulated in the political and architectural debates of the 1930s. The third and final section of the book deals with the problem of historiography on a broad level. The section also includes contributions from Roger Jonsson and Sven-Olov Wallenstein, who draw on the work of Michel Foucault and delineate a genealogical model of analysis that focuses on how architecture can take part in the production of subjectivity. AUTHORS Reinhold Martin is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, Columbia University, and Director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for Study of American Architecture, Columbia University. He is also partner in the firm Martin/Baxi Architects, New York. Penny Sparke is a Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Design History at Kingston University, London.
