Book excerpt: Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is an emerging remote-sensing technology with promising potential to assist in mapping, monitoring, and assessment of forest resources. Continuous technological advancement and substantial reductions in data acquisition cost have enabled acquisition of laser data over entire states and regions. These developments have triggered an explosion of interest in LIDAR technology. Despite a growing body of peer-reviewed literature documenting the merits of LIDAR for forest assessment, management, and planning, there seems to be little information describing in detail the acquisition, quality assessment, and processing of laser data for forestry applications. This report addresses this information deficit by providing a foundational knowledge base containing answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Book excerpt: Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), also known as airborne laser scanning, is a rapidly emerging technology for remote sensing. Used to help map, monitor, and assess natural resources, LiDAR data were first embraced by forestry professionals in Scandinavia as a tool for conducting forest inventories in the mid to late 1990s. Thus early LiDAR theory and applications were developed for commercial forests typical of a region with gentle topography; conditions far different from those of the temperate rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. To develop LiDAR data acquisition specifications and analysis methods specific to the Pacific Northwest, scientists with the Pacific Northwest Research Station improved calculations for local conditions. Their aim was to ensure that laser-based estimates of key forest inventory parameters such as vegetation height, and attributes such as volume and biomass were free from serious biases. Based on this research, recommendations for determining optimal LiDAR acquisition specifications have since been adopted as general specifications by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, which leads a consortium of laser data users in the state. These developments have been instrumental in making LiDAR a useful tool in forest management and planning within the region.

Book excerpt: This book collects 15 papers written by renowned scholars from across the globe that showcase the forefront research in Earth observation (EO), remote sensing (RS), and geoscientific ground investigations to study archaeological records and cultural heritage. Archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, remote sensing, and archaeometry experts share their methodologies relying on a wealth of techniques and data including, but not limited to: very high resolution satellite images from optical and radar space-borne sensors, air-borne surveys, geographic information systems (GIS), archaeological fieldwork, and historical maps. A couple of the contributions highlight the value of noninvasive and nondestructive laboratory analyses (e.g., neutron diffraction) to reconstruct ancient manufacturing technologies, and of geological ground investigations to corroborate hypotheses of historical events that shaped cultural landscapes. Case studies encompass famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites (e.g., the Nasca Lines in Peru), remote and yet-to-discover archaeological areas in tropical forests in central America, European countries, south Asian changing landscapes, and environments which are arid nowadays but were probably full of woody vegetation in the past. Finally, the reader can learn about the state-of-the-art of education initiatives to train site managers in the use of space technologies in support of their activities, and can understand the legal aspects involved in the application of EO and RS to address current challenges of African heritage preservation.

This data can be topographic but can also include information about the height of objects on the ground such as buildings, other types of infrastructure, and trees. Lidar (light detection and ranging) data can provide this information. Lidar technology has evolved quickly since the late 1990s; therefore, acquisition requirements have changed to keep pace with this relatively new remote sensing data source. Several government agencies have formed consortia with academic and research institutions to share costs. The goal of this document is to 1) make lidar users aware of the specifications that have been developed by the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium (PSLC) and the Oregon Lidar Consortium (OLC) for areas with heavy forest cover; 2) describe typical products that can be created using lidar data; and 3) make recommendations for developing specifications for acquiring lidar for natural-resource applications. An example of a lidar specification for a forestry application on the Coronado National Forest is included in the appendix.

Book excerpt: State transportation agencies (STAs) rely on implementing innovative new processes and technology for managing roadway assets; LiDAR surveys are one of these key enabling technologies. LiDAR surveys comprise an ever-evolving set of technologies that allow for a rapid, yet very accurate, collection of roadway asset data through a single effort which, when specified, integrated, and used correctly, can result in efficient workflows for agencies. While STAs may already be collecting data for specific purposes, these efforts are often duplicated within various agency disciplines using a variety of collection methods and standards. LiDAR surveys help consolidate resources, thus maximizing funding and enhancing the accuracy and integration of information. While the process for implementing LiDAR surveys will depend on a number of factors — most notably the agency’s current pre-construction, post-construction, asset inventory practices, process maturity, internal technical resources, and available funding — this guide draws the decision makers’ attention to the key issues that must be addressed for the optimization of data collection for use in an enterprise digital data solution. These include developing information requirements for data collection and products to be delivered for specific purposes and disciplines within the agency, and implementing the data collection program itself.
