Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the New Testament Dialect Whoever will compare the present with the former edition of this work, will find the changes to be more numerous than could be well recounted. I would hope that they are for the better; but of this others must judge. A meagre skeleton of New Testament Grammar would not correspond viith my views of utility, although I am aware that there 18 a class of read ers who desire such a work. But the demands of sacred philology cannot be answered in this way, whoever may attempt so to satisfy them. Begin ners and hasty readers may complain, perhaps, of the copiousness of the present work; but those who are seriously bent upon the acquisition of a more enlarged knowledge of the New Testament idiom, will be the last to complain of its copiousness. Winer has occupied much more room with Syntax alone, than I have taken up with the whole compass of grammar. I do not complain of this in him; but I may repel criticism in respect to this subject which is not well grounded, by appeal to distinguished examples of much greater copiousness than my own. Of the importance of a New Testament Grammar for the purposes of sa cred criticism, it does not seem necessary to say any thing, at the present time. It 18 an encouraging circumstance, that our country is beginning to appreciate this subject In some degree as it deserves to be appreciated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the New Testament Greek It is to hoped that the reproduction of the following work in English will not be regarded as a superfluous labor. The day has gone by, indeed, when the extravagant maxim could find acceptance, "The better grammarian, the worse logician and theologian;" but the somewhat indiscriminate depreciation of the study of the dead languages at the present day is not without injurious influence upon those who are preparing themselves to be expounders of the Divine Word. Even in that land which is reputed to be the home of philological studies, the prince of New Testament expositors has recently said: "We theologians are still far too deficient in a comprehensive and positive knowledge of Greek Grammar." The sense of such a deficiency which the general progress of linguistic science must sooner or later awaken, and especially the recognition (which the growing tendency to break away from traditional opinions will force upon theologians) of the need of taking a new inventory of the biblical data, as preliminary to a revision of the scientific statements of the Christian faith, will eventually secure a welcome for works like the present. Its author is the youngest son of the late Philip Buttmann, whose Grammars, which have been in use now for more than eighty years, have rendered the name familiar wherever Greek is studied. After completing his training at the universities of Berlin and Bonn, he became, in 1837, a teacher in the gymnasium at Potsdam, where, by successive promotions, he attained, in 1854, to the rank of Professor. But in the same year he resigned his office, in order to secure the leisure needed for his literary labors; and he has lived since in retirement, except that he has held the position of "Schulrath,"to which the city appointed him in 1864. Book excerpt: The Ancient Greek Grammar for the Study of the New Testament is a tool for theologians and others interested in interpreting the Greek New Testament. It is a reference grammar that systematically covers all areas relevant to well-founded text interpretation including textgrammar. Combining accuracy with accessibility was one of the main objectives in producing the book. The information it provides is based on the best of traditional and more recent research in the study of Ancient Greek and linguistic communication. Differences between classical and non-classical usage are regularly indicated. The mode of presentation is largely shaped by the needs of prospective users, who are typically unacquainted with the details of linguistic research. Aiming at both a professional quality of content and user-friendly presentation, a tool was produced that aims to be of service to novices and more experienced exegetes alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of New Testament Greek, Vol. 1 The title-page of the present volume claims for it connexion with a book which for thirty-five years has been in constant use among New Testament students in this country and elsewhere. The reader may therefore reasonably demand some explanation, when he turns over these pages and finds a wholly new book, widely differing from the great predecessor the name of which is thus boldly appropriated. He will bear with me if I enter briefly into the history of the undertaking, and explain the motives and objects which have prompted my treatment of a work on which the hands of innovation should not be rashly laid. It is now forty years since my father, to whose memory this book is dedicated, was invited by Messrs T. & T. Clark to translate and edit G.B. Winer's epoch-making Grammatik des neutestamentlichen Sprachidioms. The proposal originated with Bishop Ellicott, afterwards Chairman of the New Testament Revision Company, and the last survivor of a band of workers who, while the following pages were in the press, became united once more. Dr Ellicott had been in correspondence on biblical matters with the young Assistant Tutor at the Wesleyan Theological College, Richmond; and his estimate of his powers was shown first by the proposal as to Winer, and not long after by the Bishop's large use of my father's advice in selecting new members of the Revision Company. Mr Moulton took his place in the Jerusalem Chamber in 1870, the youngest member of the Company; and in the same year his edition of Winer appeared. My brother's Life of our father (Isbister, 1899) gives an account of its reception. It would not be seemly for me to enlarge on its merits, and it would be as superfluous as unbecoming. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the New Testament Dialect A Grammar of the dialect peculiar to the New Testament, is needed by all who critically study its original language. The time has been, when to call in question the pure Atticism of the New Testament writers was deemed and treated as an offence against the claims of inspiration. That period is now past. It is generally felt and acknowledged, at the present time, that if the Purists Could have established the claims which they made for the Greek of the New Testament, one of the very best arguments of a critical nature, to prove that Hebrews were the real authors of this volume, would have been confuted. The most accurate description which can be given of the Greek idiom of the New Testament, is, that it consists of Hebrew thoughts invested with Greek costume. The sentiment, the phraseology, and the colouring of the whole, are Hebrew; which is just what we should naturally expect in a system of religious history, discussion, and precepts, composed by Hebrews. No native heathen Greek, unless by aid truly miraculous, could have composed such a book as to style and idiom. All is just as it should be, on the supposition that its authors were Hebrews; the entire volume is altogether in conformity with the demands of criticism, which takes its stand upon this basis. But while we allow thus much, we must be careful not to extend the Hebraism of the New Testament beyond just and proper bounds. The Purists would allow of nothing but pure Attic Greek in it. Their antagonists, the Hellenists after a long and arduous contest, drove them from the field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, first-year Greek students have relied on James Allen Hewett's New Testament Greek: A Beginning and Intermediate Grammar for its straightforward approach to the fundamentals of language study. Now this trusted grammar will continue to provide beginning scholars with a solid foundation for doing translation, exegesis, and biblical interpretation. New Testament Greek presents complex Greek grammatical concepts clearly and in terms of familiar English grammar. Each concept is then illustrated using multiple examples from the New Testament, and students apply their learning with translation exercises drawn directly from biblical text instead of artificial sentences created by grammarians. The CD-ROM included with the textbook contains powerful learning tools for vocalizing Greek, mastering new vocabulary, and identifying verb forms. Features include: • chapters providing a foundational understanding of the basic components of language • a linguistically informed chapter on how languages communicate meaning • detailed explanations of complex grammatical constructions that shed light on biblical meanings • grammatical discussions that reflect recent advances in the understanding of Greek tense and case • vocabulary study lists based on NT word frequency • Greek-to-English translation exercises that help students quickly build competency and confidence • optional "Step Beyond" advanced grammar sections and English-to-Greek translation exercises • expanded reference appendixes, including summary word charts, vocabulary lists, and a list of principal parts of common verbs • a dictionary of all the Greek words used in the text • a complete answer key to the translation exercises on the CD-ROM
