Book Synopsis Iranian and Minority Languages at Home and in Diaspora by : Anousha Sedighi
Download or read book Iranian and Minority Languages at Home and in Diaspora written by Anousha Sedighi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the typology, syntax, and morphology of Iranian languages have been widely explored, the sociolinguistic aspects remain largely understudied. The present companion addresses this essential yet overlooked area of research in two ways: (i) The book explores multilingualism within Iran and its neighbouring countries. (ii) It also investigates Iranian heritage languages within the diasporic context of the West. The scope of languages covered is vast: In addition to discussing Iranian minority languages such as Tati and Balochi, the book explores non-Iranian minority languages such as Azeri, Tukmen, Armenian and Mandaic. Furthermore, the companion investigates Iranian heritage languages such as Wakhi, Pashto, and Persian within their diasporic and global contexts. In the current era of migration and globalization, minority and heritage speakers are increasingly valuable resources. By focusing on the speakers, the companion provides new insights into a multitude of sociolinguistic issues including language attitude and identity, language use and literacy practices, language policy, language shift and loss. The companion is an essential reference for those interested in Iranian languages, minority languages, heritage languages, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, language policy and planning, diaspora and migration studies, as well as those researching in related fields.
Book Synopsis Towards a Historical Grammar of Balochi by : Agnes Korn
Download or read book Towards a Historical Grammar of Balochi written by Agnes Korn and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 2005 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of Balochi historical grammar. The main part of the book is a new discussion of the historical phonology of Balochi, the only comprehensive treatment of which existing so far dates from the end of the 19th century. Meanwhile, new material from a wide range of Balochi dialects and varieties has come to light. This makes it possible to distinguish between sound changes affecting the Balochi language as a whole and those that operate only in some variety; the approach to do so systematically is attempted here for the first time. Reassessing previous treatments and comparing important related languages (chiefly New Persian, Parthian and Avestan), the book analyses the development of Old Iranian sounds to the stage of Common Balochi and the changes leading from that stage to the variants spoken today in Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan and some other countries. The results indicate contact with other languages, specifically with Persian, as several Balochi sound changes are not such as we might expect in a North Western Iranian language. Concerning other sound changes, Balochi differs from all attested Middle Iranian languages. The predecessor of contemporary Balochi seems to have been a dialect rather similar to Parthian, but differing from it in a number of details. So the study of Balochi sound changes provides evidence for Middle Iranian dialectal variation. The diversity and intensity of contacts with neighbouring languages is also reflected in the Balochi lexicon of which selected fields are presented and discussed. The layers of loanwords show a continuing influence of Persian from the earliest times to the present day, relationships to Kurdish, Pashto and Brahui, and, particularly in the field of kinship terminology, intense contact with speakers of Modern Indic languages. The book is complemented by a morphological appendix and a comprehensive etymological index. It is intended as a contribution in the fields of New Iranian languages and historical Iranian linguistics.

Book Synopsis Standardization and Orthography in the Balochi Language by : Carina Jahani
Download or read book Standardization and Orthography in the Balochi Language written by Carina Jahani and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a background survey of theories of language standardization and orthography of the development of other Iranian standard languages and of Balochi dialects and phonology, this work provides a description and assessment of the development of Balochi as a written literary language from the 1950s up to the present. Apart from a thorough investigation of existing publications and publishers the study consists of two main parts, both of which are based on interviews with and articles written by leading literary Baloch, as well as on quantitative investigations. Balochi language is dealt with, and investigations as to what dialects predominate in written Balochi are presented. The second part of the study deals with the orthography of Balochi. To each of these two parts of the study there belongs a text appendix. The purpose of these appendices is to provide practical illustrations of the questions dealt with in the theoretical investigations. Balochi language, which is less than 40 years old as a written literary medium, is at present still in a formative stage. Thus, even if there are certain tendencies towards linguistic and orthographic standardization, there is as yet no single accepted standardized norm for written Balochi.
