Book excerpt: Excerpt from Denton Public Schools: Course of Study, Rules and Regulations; Also the Summary of Superintendent's Report, 1903 1904 Denton, Texas, August 31, 1903. To the City School Board of Denton, Texas: Gentle1nen - I have the honor of submitting to you a detailed statistical report of the Benton public schools for the school year ending on this date. An examina tion of this will show that our total enrollment for the year was 95 more than that of last year. I can also say that the character of work done by both teachers and pupils has kept pace with the increase in num bers. The addition to the Central Building has been of inestim'able value to our school, giving us plenty of. Room for our library and laboratory. Our school library will be of material aid to us during next year. It now contains about one thousand numbered vol umes, besides dictionaries encyclopaedias and other books of reference. I desire to express my deep sense of obligation to the Ariel Club and Ladies' Shakespeare Club of our city for the interest they have manifested in the beautifying of our school rooms, two large beauti ful pictures having been donated besides other expres sions of great merit. It is very gratifying to me to be able to state that the work done by the teachers dur ing last year was more successful than ever before and the relation existing between Superintendent and teach ers was absolutelv harm onions. On behalf of the teach ers. I desire to thank the Board for the hearty support and encouragement you have given us. In our efforts to advance the educational interests of our city. We be lieve the coming year will be the most successful in the history of our schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The history of Denton County, founded in 1846, has been well preserved through postcards. These images, produced from vintage photographs and artist renditions, reflect a time when communication through postcards was quicker, easier, and less expensive than writing a letter. Inside this book, readers are treated to charming snapshots of local history depicting churches, the downtown public square, businesses, public schools, the two newly created universities, railroad depots, trolleys, the earliest automobiles, and some of Denton Countys most familiar town views and tourist attractions.

Book excerpt: In A Premature Affair, Richard Joyce's new novel, readers are transported to North Texas in the 1960s for a story about the precarious and fragile nature of young love and early friendships."e;A Premature Affair"e; depicts an abortive love affair between Adam, a young English writer/teacher, and his determined English girl-friend. The affair ultimately shatters, as the lovers are driven apart by their own selfish aims and flaws of character, as well as by the stifling pressures of parental consent and convention. In parallel, readers will watch the decline and ultimate destruction of one of Adam's friends and colleagues, Bill, destroyed by flaws in his own character and hidden external forces aligned against him.Joyce deals with timeless themes in A Premature Affair. "e;Young people still face the same inherent hazards in their lives and in the affairs of the heart as do the characters in this book,"e; he says. "e;Although the external formats may be different today, the internal issues confronting people remain eternally the same."e;

Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking new book on the Norteña and Sureña (North/South) youth gang dynamic, cultural anthropologist and linguist Norma Mendoza-Denton looks at the daily lives of young Latinas and their innovative use of speech, bodily practices, and symbolic exchanges that signal their gang affiliations and ideologies. Her engrossing ethnographic and sociolinguistic study reveals the connection of language behavior and other symbolic practices among Latina gang girls in California, and their connections to larger social processes of nationalism, racial/ethnic consciousness, and gender identity. An engrossing account of the Norte and Sur girl gangs - the largest Latino gangs in California Traces how elements of speech, bodily practices, and symbolic exchanges are used to signal social affiliation and come together to form youth gang styles Explores the relationship between language and the body: one of the most striking aspects of the tattoos, make-up, and clothing of the gang members Unlike other studies – which focus on violence, fighting and drugs – Mendoza-Denton delves into the commonly-overlooked cultural and linguistic aspects of youth gangs

Book excerpt: Follow a trail of Denton ghost stories from nineteenth-century pioneers and outlaws to modern-day businessmen who don't intend to clock out. Locals report that John B. Denton still roams the grounds of the courthouse lawn and keeps watch over his namesake town square from an upper window. The 1949 Campus Theatre is said to be haunted by the playful spirit of J.P. Harrison, the first general manager of the building. Historic restaurants like Cartwright's Ranch House and Killer's Tacos pair the occasional full-body apparition with their delicious menus. From the specter showing up in a selfie at Dix Coney Island to a phantom threading its way through Rose's Costume shop, Teal Gray captures the haunted heritage of this fascinating Texas town.

The spiciest ingredient in the legendary rap group Salt-N-Pepa, fans know Sandy Denton as Pep, or Pepa, the fun-loving half of Salt-N-Pepa. But behind the laughs and the smiles is a whole lot of pain, and for the first time in Let’s talk About Pep, she candidly talks about her troubled childhood, surviving abuse, her first encounters with Cheryl “Salt” James, instant success, her failed marriages and escape from domestic abuse, and her triumphant comeback on reality shows like The Surreal Life and The Salt-N-Pepa Show. Filled with surprising insights, outrageous anecdotes, and celebrity cameos—including Queen Latifah, Martin Lawrence, Janice Dickinson, Missy Elliott, L.L. Cool J, Ron Jeremy, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez, and many others—Let’s Talk About Pep offers a fascinating glimpse behind the fame, family, failures, and success...and into the faithful heart of a woman who will always treasure the good friends she found along the way. Every bit as captivating and provocative as her Grammy Award-winning music, this story reveals the real Pepa—upfront, uncensored, unstoppable—a true pioneer, survivor, and inspiration to women everywhere.
