Book excerpt: This study presents an application of Geographic Information systems (GIS) to examine the geographic pattern and spatial relationship between oil spills and child diarrhea, investigating whether the prevalence of diarrhea disease among children in the Niger Delta is associated with proximity to an oil spill. Oil spills are common in the Niger Delta and previous research has linked oil spills to human health hazards such as dermatoxic diseases, cancer, neonatal and child mortality. Investigating infant diarrhea is critical to understanding the underlying causes of infant mortality. This study is based on analysis of georeferenced oil spill data from the Nigerian Oil Spill Monitor, and spatial health data from the Nigeria National Demographic and Health Survey (DHS, 2013).

Book excerpt: A major new independent scientific assessment, carried out by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), shows that pollution from over 50 years of oil operations in the region has penetrated further and deeper than many may have supposed. The assessment has been unprecedented. Over a 14-month period, the UNEP team examined more than 200 locations, surveyed 122 kilometres of pipeline rights of way, reviewed more than 5,000 medical records and engaged over 23,000 people at local community meetings. The environmental restoration of Ogoniland could prove to be the world's most wide-ranging and long term oil clean-up exercise ever undertaken if contaminated drinking water, land, creeks and important ecosystems such as mangroves are to be brought back to full, productive health. The report key findings are alarming both in terms of human health protection and environmental protection: some areas, which appear unaffected at the surface, are in reality severely contaminated underground; at least 10 Ogoni communities where drinking contaminated water; control and maintenance of oilfield infrastructure in Ogoniland has been and remains inadequate; the impact of oil on mangrove vegetation has been disastrous. The report recommends direct actions in order to address the Niger Delta contamination by oil and warns that the restoration of the area could take up years.

It also proffers solution to the problems, drawing on the wealth of experience gained from the oil spill preparedness and response put in place by some government agencies and operators across the globe. Based on this, the paper proposes a Quantitative risk based approach for the oil spill preparedness and response in the Niger Delta. This approach involves the quantification of risk as result of the probability of an event occurring and the impact potential of the event. Hence hazards and risks can be pre-determined and effective strategies could be developed to mitigate the impacts of potential oil spills.

It has caused so much issues that has affected the habitation of the people who live there. This topic bothers also on the application of the resource curse theory and the sustainable development theory that deals with the reason behind resource-rich countries not developing effectively and also the reason behind innovation activities destroying the environment to the detriment of future generations.The bulk of the research work which is to be done on this project is executed using a doctrinal approach primarily facilitated by libraries and the internet as useful guides. By consequence, all the statements of legal principle and its administration is dependent of this research methodology. A significant portion of information for this research work is sourced from internet materials, journals, and articles.In recent times. 881 cases of oil spills have been recorded between January 2019 and April 2021. This spillage happened in 12 states within the country. The information stated above is obtained from a government-run satellite tracker known as the NOSDRA. It was also recorded that 77 percent of the spills majorly occurred in only 3 oil-producing states in Nigeria. The total oil spillage within this period has been equaled to about 43,000 barrels of oil of which the monetary value is worth $3 million at the international market and 1.23 billion naira in the national markets.This research work has highlighted these issues and has proffered solutions on how the problem of environmental degradation by oil multinationals can be resolved. Based on the result on the research work conducted, it was deduced that oil exploration and exploitation serviced have caused alterations in the environment. These alterations have been examined and this research work has given a rise of hope that the terrible and devastating state of the Niger Delta can be salvaged and restored to normality.Environmental Restoration can be achieved when we stop the practice of illegal dumping of il and other hazardous wastes within our environment. This also includes prosecuting employees and officials responsible for authorizing illegal dumping. Adherence to the Department of Petroleum Resources regulations for clean-ups should also be encouraged.

Oil from the region has generated enormous financial returns to the government and oil companies in the country, but the local people have seen little benefit from the revenues. This study examined how residents of the region perceive the impact of oil extraction activities and its effects on groundwater, which is the main source of their potable water. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations were detected in groundwater samples all around the region exceeding national and international acceptable limits for drinking water quality. These results, supported by spatial analysis of the region's oil spillage reports, reinforced the communities' assertion that their groundwater has been rendered unsafe due to petroleum activities.

Book excerpt: Fidelis Allen situates violent conflict in the Niger Delta in the context of failure by government to effectively implement relevant oil-related environmental policies intended to achieve sustainable development, arguing that oil and environment-related conflicts in the region are reflections of this failure. This failure is premised on the notion that the goal of sustainable development, as clearly outlined in Nigeria’s National Environmental Policy and implied in various other policies, can be pursued through the activities of government, individuals and business organisations that are capable of engendering economic and social progress for communities that depend on the environment for their survival. In fact, available evidence shows that government and oil company activities (or failures to act) actually contribute to the despoliation of the environment in the Niger Delta. Despite existing environmental legislations and guidelines, unsafe waste disposal, flaring of gas and oil spillage remain key features of oil industry operations in the Niger Delta. Not surprisingly, the book highlights a lack of synergy between government and oil company activities, and the attainment of sustainable development as a key goal of the environmental policy of the government. In other words, the activities of the government and oil companies do not sufficiently promote sustainable development. The net consequence is reflected in the frustrations of local justice and environmental movement groups about the political processes which deter (rather than enable) their agitation for improvements in local living conditions and development in the Niger Delta. Over time, those frustrations begin to manifest at different levels, including aggressive and violent behaviours against oil companies and government security agencies for their contributory roles.
