Book Synopsis Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries Management and Planning by : Gertjan de Graaf
Download or read book Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries Management and Planning written by Gertjan de Graaf and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many fishery biologists and policy makers involved in inland fisheries management and planning are unaware of GIS technology and its potential for fisheries planning and management. The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active for the last 19 years in promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture. Promotional activities have been carried out through training, projects, field missions, and oral presentations and publications. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a "do-it-yourself" manual giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science. The overall objective of this manual is to encourage fishery managers to use this tool (GIS) to foster the sustainable use of natural resources. There are five main sections in the manual: GIS concepts and functions and key tools provided by ArcView 3.x, Geographic coordinate system and map projections, Raster data and analysis, Regression analysis, and Application case studies. All sections are accompanied by exercises that have been designed to illustrate key applications of GIS in inland and marine fisheries management. Also, a custom-designed ArcView grid regression extension is included to show the integration of GIS with surplus production models.

Book Synopsis Modern Aquaculture in the Coastal Zone by : João Coimbra
Download or read book Modern Aquaculture in the Coastal Zone written by João Coimbra and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful development of coastal aquaculture in the opening years of the new millennium will depend upon solution of a multiplicity of economic, sociological, engineering, scientific and environmental issues. The objective of this volume is to update the current status of research in aquaculture in the coastal zone and outline directions for the development of sustainable aquaculture using modern methodologies. It also discusses the application of existing knowledge and the creation of new knowledge to ensure that aquaculture will develop at a sufficient pace to sustain and enhance the availability of high quality foods of aquatic origin in the human diet despite the global decline in the capture fishery.

Book Synopsis Marine and Coastal Geographical Information Systems by : Dawn J. Wright
Download or read book Marine and Coastal Geographical Information Systems written by Dawn J. Wright and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-12-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine and coastal applications of GIS are finally gaining wide acceptance in scientific as well as GIS communities, and cover the fields of deep sea geology, chemistry and biology, and coastal geology, biology, engineering and resource management. Comprising rigorous contributions from a group of leading scholars in marine and coastal GIS, this book will inspire and stimulate continued research in this important new application domain. Launched as a project to mark the UN International Year of the Ocean (1998) and supported by the International Geographical Union's Commission on Coastal Systems, this book covers progress and research in the marine and coastal realms, in the areas of theory, applications and empirical results. It is the first book of its kind to address basic and applied scientific problems in deep sea and coastal science using GIS and remote sensing technologies. It is designed for GIS and remote sensing specialists, but also for those with an interest in oceans, lakes and shores. Coverage ranges from seafloor spreading centres to Exclusive Economic Zones to microscale coastal habitats; and techniques include submersibles, computer modelling, image display, 3-D temporal data visualization, and development and application of new algorithms and spatial data structures. It illustrates the broad usage of GIS, image processing, and computer modelling in deep sea and coastal environments, and also addresses important institutional issues arising out of the use of these technologies.
