Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study of nationalism in the Jura region of Switzerland raises issues specific to the area as well as broader geographic and political questions. The author examines nationalist feeling and activity throughout the region in the context of the environmental, religious, and socio-economic background. Special emphasis is given to analyzing 20th-century developments and ways in which separatist tendencies--which are an issue in other societies such as Northern Ireland and Quebec--can be resolved through consensual methods.
Book Synopsis Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies by : Kenneth McRae
Download or read book Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies written by Kenneth McRae and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1998-04-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the French Revolution, Switzerland developed from a country in which German dominated linguistically into a confederation of four officially recognized language groups -- German, French, Italian, Romansh -- concentrated in different geographical areas and marked by distinctive cultures and lifestyles. Following a historical overview of this development and the social and political institutionalization of the linguistic cleavages, McRae's study examines key elements in the functioning of modern Swiss society: political parties, federal and cantonal institutions, the media, educational and cultural policies, the relation between the linguistic cleavages and class and religion, the attitudes and behaviour of the four language groups to one another. It concludes by reviewing the various explanations advanced to explain the relative social and political stability of Switzerland. This book is the first volume in a projected multi-volume work examining four multilingual Western democracies. The volumes to come will focus on Belgium (scheduled for publication in 1985), Finland, and Canada.

Book Synopsis Centripetal Democracy by : Joseph Lacey
Download or read book Centripetal Democracy written by Joseph Lacey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centripetal democracy is the idea that legitimate democratic institutions set in motion forms of citizen practice and representative behaviour that serve as powerful drivers of political identity formation. Partisan modes of political representation in the context of multifaceted electoral and direct democratic voting opportunities are emphasised on this model. There is, however, a strain of thought predominant in political theory that doubts the democratic capacities of political systems constituted by multiple public spheres. This view is referred to as the lingua franca thesis on sustainable democratic systems (LFT). Inadequate democratic institutions and acute demands to divide the political system (through devolution or secession), are predicted by this thesis. By combining an original normative democratic theory with a comparative analysis of how Belgium and Switzerland have variously managed to sustain themselves as multilingual democracies, this book identifies the main institutional features of a democratically legitimate European Union and the conditions required to bring it about. Part One presents a novel theory of democratic legitimacy and political identity formation on which subsequent analyses are based. Part Two defines the EU as a demoi-cracy and provides a thorough democratic assessment of this political system. Part Three explains why Belgium has largely succumbed to the centrifugal logic predicted by the LFT, while Switzerland apparently defies this logic. Part Four presents a model of centripetal democracy for the EU, one that would greatly reduce its democratic deficit and ensure that this political system does not succumb to the centrifugal forces expected by the LFT.
Book Synopsis Why Switzerland? by : Jonathan Steinberg
Download or read book Why Switzerland? written by Jonathan Steinberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and completely updated edition of Jonathan Steinberg's classic account of Switzerland's unique political and economic system. Why Switzerland? examines the complicated voting system that allows citizens to add, strike out, or vote more than once for candidates, with extremely complicated systems of proportional representation; a collective and consensual executive leadership in both state and church; and the creation of the Swiss idea of citizenship, with tolerance of differences of language and religion, and a perfectionist bureaucracy which regulates the well-ordered society. This third edition tries to test the flexibility of the Swiss way of politics in the globalized world, social media, the huge expansion of money in world circulation and the vast tsunamis of capital which threaten to swamp it. Can the complex machinery that has maintained Swiss institutions for centuries survive globalization, neo-liberalism and mass migration from poor countries to rich ones?

Book Synopsis Differing Diversities by : Tony Bennett
Download or read book Differing Diversities written by Tony Bennett and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural diversity, in all its forms, poses a challenge to traditional cultural policy. This report discusses the issues of citizenship and the nature of democratic public policy in culturally diverse societies. It takes a comparative international perspective, and focuses on ethnic-based cultural differences. The report considers five policy contexts which have a significant bearing on the general direction of cultural policy, and identifies four principles of cultural entitlements based on heterogeneity. It recommends a number of steps that the Council of Europe and its member states should take in order to further promote cultural diversity.
