Book excerpt: Research on base metal sulfide deposits is among the oldest and best-documented subjects of economic geologists worldwide, c- sidering that copper was first mined about 3000 years ago on the island of Cyprus. During the past 10 years, after the exciting discovery of active sulfide formation on the modem ocean floor, a considerable flow of new ideas has stimulated and influenced the discussion of o- forming processes for copper-zinc-Iead sulfides in sedimentary and volcanic environments. The development of new genetic concepts consequently led to reinterpretation of some apparently well-est- lished formation models. This Proceedings Volume contains a collection of carefully selected papers on current research on the geology and metallogeny of base metal sulfide deposits presented as oral or poster contri- tions at the DMG (Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft) - GDMB (Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhiitten- und Bergleute - Fachsektion Lagerstiittenforschung) - SGA (Society of Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits) Joint Meeting on Ore Deposits in Aachen, Federal Republic of Germany, September 16-19, 1985. Base metal sulfide deposits with different ore compositions occur in a wide variety of geological and lithological settings of almost any age. This has been taken into account in organizing this volume along the lines of classical host-rock classification. The first group of contributions focuses on sediment-hosted base metal sulfide deposits including examples of Kupferschiefer and Copperbelt-type, as well as lead-zinc mineralization in car- nate host rocks.

Book excerpt: The Boundary volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit (0.45 Mt @ 3.4% Cu, 4.0% Zn, 1.0 % Pb, 34 g/t Ag) is located in the Tally Pond group (~510 Ma), central Newfoundland, Canada. The deposit is hosted by rhyolitic rocks that are interpreted to have formed within a rifted continental arc on the leading edge of Ganderia. Mineralization consists of massive pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite lenses. The basal portion of these lenses contain lapilli tuff clasts indicative of replacement style mineralization. Three hydrothermal alteration assemblages are recognized at Boundary: quartz-sericite, chlorite-sericite, and intense chlorite. Lithogeochemical data are useful in identifying key element associations and alteration assemblages. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy data provide an effective vector for Zn mineralization and correlate with whole rock geochemistry. Lithogeochemical and SWIR data have been used to recreate a three-dimensional alteration model of the Boundary deposit that may be useful in further mineral exploration.

Book excerpt: The Heath Steele E zone Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit lies in the Heath Steele belt in the Bathurst Mining Camp, northeast New Brunswick. The Heath Steele E zone deposit is hosted mainly by felsic volcanic and related volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation (Tetagouche Group), which were deposited in the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin in the Middle Ordovician. The host sequence is affected by locally intense, deposit-related hydrothermal alteration, and polyphase deformation and mid- to upper-greenschist grade regional metamorphism related to inclusion of the host sequence in the Brunswick Subduction Complex. Numerous geological events have affected the E zone deposit and the host rocks, which have complicated a proper stratigraphic interpretation in the area. Furthermore, the similarity among the various volcano-sedimentary units precludes confident unit correlation among adjacent drill cores on the basis of macro-scale observations alone. For this reason, chemostratigraphy is employed to discriminate among the various volcano-sedimentary units, and for assessment of deposit related hydrothermal alteration using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) as the main tool. The pXRF is a useful analytical tool for acquiring high-quality results in real-time with a level of resolution that surpasses most other techniques, thereby providing at least 30 potential variables for use in chemostratigraphic characterization and correlation. The pXRF analysis of eight drill cores of the study area facilitated: 1) the construction of discrimination diagrams that show that the host felsic volcanic rocks in the E zone deposit are rhyodacite/dacite and rhyolite with a tholeiitic magmatic affinity; consistent with an intracontinental back-arc environment, 2) the identification of geochemically distinct rock units in this case, a clear difference between structural hanging wall and footwall was recognized, and 3) qualitative characterization of hydrothermal alteration in the footwall (mainly chlorite-carbonate and chlorite-pyrite-sericite assemblage) and the hanging wall (K-feldspar-sericite and sericite-chlorite-pyrite assemblage).

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ming deposit, Newfoundland Appalachians, is a metamorphosed (upper greenschist to lower amphibolite facies), Cambro-Ordovician, bimodalmafic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit that consists of several, spatially-associated, elongated orebodies composed of stratabound semimassive to massive sulfides and/or discordant sulfide stringers in a rhyodacitic footwall. Copper is the main commodity; however, the deposit contains precious metal-bearing zones with elevated Au grades. In this study, field observations, microscopy, and micro-analytical tools including electron microprobe, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and secondary ion mass spectrometry were used to constrain the relative timing of precious metal emplacement, the physico-chemical conditions of hydrothermal fluid precipitation, and the sources of sulfur, precious metals, semi-metals and metals. The ore mineral assemblage is complex and indicates an intermediate sulfidation state. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are the dominant ore minerals with minor sphalerite and pyrrhotite, and trace galena, arsenopyrite and cubanite. Additional trace phases include tellurides, NiSb phases, sulfosalts, electrum, AgHg±Au alloys, and oxides. Silver phases and precious metals occur predominantly in semi-massive and massive sulfides as free grains, and as grains spatially associated with arsenopyrite and/or sulfosalts. Precious metal phases occurring between recrystallized pyrite and within cataclastic pyrite are rare. Hence, the complex ore assemblage and textures strongly suggest syngenetic precious metal emplacement, whereas metamorphism and deformation only internally and locally remobilized precious metal phases. The ore assemblage formed from reduced, acidic hydrothermal fluids over a range of temperatures (≈350 to below 260oC). The abundance of telluride and Ag-bearing tetrahedrite, however, varies strongly between the different orebodies indicating variable ƒTe2, ƒSe2, mBi, and mSb within the hydrothermal fluids. The variations in the concentrations of semi-metals and metals (As, Bi, Hg, Sb, Se, Te), as well as Au and Ag, were due to variations in temperature but also to a likely contribution of magmatic fluids into the VMS hydrothermal system from presumably different geothermal reservoirs. Sulfur isotope studies indicate at least two sulfur sources: sulfur from thermochemically-reduced seawater sulfate and igneous sulfur. The source of igneous sulfur is the igneous footwall, direct magmatic fluid/volatiles, or both. Upper greenschist to lower amphibolite metamorphic conditions and deformation had no significant effect on the sulfur isotope composition of the sulfides at the Ming deposit.
